Update: Sony responds to Activision threat

Update: Sony responds to Activision threat
Yesterday, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick suggested that the publisher may eventually be forced to drop support of the PlayStation 3 console if Sony does not cut its price.

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too," said Kotick at the time.

Today, Sony has "responded", expressing: "We respect our third parties' opinions and their right to express those opinions but we will not be commenting on this story."

Sony's response was nothing more than standard PR, but video game analyst Michael Pachter had more to add:

"Of course Bobby's bluffing, and good for him," says Pachter.

"I think Bobby's obviously interested in Sony selling as many PS3s as they possibly can, and he's not happy with their penetration so far. I think he favours a price cut, and would rather see one sooner than later."

1st pary Devs are suffering, its just that simple.

Activision is a multi console 3rd party developer so i don't see how Sony dropping its price is going to change there sale figures.

i know this, once the price is dropped, i def will get it and for most of the reason i will get because God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII and Ninja Gaiden 2 are coming out soon as well.

How a price cut on the PS3 ,would help Activision is quite simple really

the lower the price is on the PS3,The more PS3's will be sold

which translates into more PS3 games being sold

put very simply the more PS3 games Activision sells the more money they will make,

if sony are smart(but sadly for us they are NOT)they will release a version of the PS3 that does not have a blu-ray drive and use DVD-ROM instead,as how many PS3 games are on a blu-ray disc!alot of people are not going to use there game system to play movies on as having the drive running for 2 hours or more without a break is not a good thing, people are better of getting a standalone movie player that way WHEN it does break they are not without there Videogame Console as well as there movie player!

Activision is actually referring to the attach rate which may go up in the event that the PS3 price is dropped. Even though the Wii is the best selling console of the 3 consoles attach rates for most games sold per console rank as following.

    1. Xbox360
    2. Wii
    3. PS3

If a person buys a PS3, extra controller, and 3 games they have spent almost $650 dollars. With the Wii and xbox360 being cheaper they leave their gamers with more of their paycheck to spend on games meaning they have more games sold per consoles than PS3. The only reason that xbox360 leads the Wii in the attach rate is that they have the bigger title games. Wii lacks the software to really push the console and keep the hardcore games playing the console.

Oh yeah only some of the best selling games over video game history!!! Yo've only got to look at the last couple of years to see that activision release huge selling titles across the board console wise. The fact remains, Sony won't drop the price until they start making money from it. But they are to stupid to see that the reason it hasn't been taken up more widely is because of the cost. Hmm choice between 1 PS3 and a couple of games or my 360 and more games+accessories I know which way I'm going. I had my PS3 for 2 days before it went because it wasn't worth it at the time, even then it was only 4 months or so old and Activision were producing some of the best games for it.

Well we can put it simple for you...
    the console is a 399$
so right now with 500$ USD you can get a console and a game and maybe an extra controller..

so say if they were to drop the price even 60$ thats another game they would have money to buy..
its not hard to comprehend really.

*GASP!!!* Activision is threatening Sony!!! OH NOOOOOOOO!
You mean, we wont get another animated film game i.e. Kung Fu Panda or Ice Age!?!?! .. you mean the next Cabellas outdoor poaching simulator might only make the Wii and 360!?!?? We may not see another terrible reiteration of a Tony Hawk game?? or even "Worse" we wont have the option to keep re-buying his rediculous skateboard periphereal gimmic every time a slightly improved one comes out bundled with his next rediculously hyped skateboarding game!??!?!!! OH NOOOOOOOOOOO! This might also mean we wont see the next "highly selling" Transformers game on the PS3???!!!

... ok but seriously, what was the last game activision put together for Sony this gen that actually utilized the hardware the way that better studios have. Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Media Molecule, (the list goes on) have had GREAT success with the PS3 at its current price point. The difference?? The ability to actually program for the console and not just port code over from the Xbox/PC version. Obviously they were making their games exclusive, but when it comes to multiplatform games I think ALL studios should take the time and structure the game for what the PS3 can do.. instead of programming for the lowest common denominator and not recognizing that you can get more from the PS3 if you actually sit down and utilize it. This is nothing but the same old "wahh, we dont code well for the PS3 cuz its tooo hard wahh" developer bullshit repackaged in a way that blames the price point. The ironic part is that it comes from a developer that has brought VERY little to the table for Sony this gen anyhow. The only way this could be funnier is if it was Valve or EA complaining.

    *EDIT*
Sorry I for got Rapalla Fishing Frenzy 2010.... OH NOOOOOO!!

not a coding issue as all the consoles use PowerPC based processors, not a sales figure issue there 3rd party they usually make there games multi-platform. so it must be a trust issue, Sony said something activison didn't like.

most 3rd party developers have handy multi kits to develop one game for different platforms.

I have all 3 systems...and only really use the PS3. I've had my PS3 since day one...haven't had a problem with it yet, since I hardly turn on my 360, I haven't gotten the RRoD that many 360 owners have gotten. So you get what you pay for. Quality. Is it really cheaper when you have to buy add-ons, future repair costs, etc.?
