Rumor: Apple entering the HDTV market in 2011
According to a new Piper Jaffray note this week, analyst Gene Munster says he expects Apple to eventually get into the HDTV market providing a full home entertainment system alongside the Apple TV media device.

Additionally, Munster says that a new, updated Apple TV is coming before Christmas, including DVR and a monthly sub to iTunes TV shows.

"We believe Apple is exploring a subscription-based offering for its TV content in iTunes," says Munster, via The Street. "Apple could leverage its deep library of content with many network and cable channel content owners to provide unlimited access to a sub-library of its TV shows for a standard monthly fee."

Adds Apple COO Tim Cook of the Apple TV:

"It is clear that the movie rental business has really helped Apple TV and there are more and more customers that want to try it,"
he says, noting that sales were up 300 percent year-on-year. "We're going to continue to invest in it, because we fundamentally believe there is something there for us in the future."

As for the HDTV, Munster expects a 2011 debut, and the completion of a full Apple home entertainment center.

"The device would push Apple further into the digital living room with interactive TV, music, movie, and gaming features," he added. "Such a device would command a premium among a competitive field of budget TVs."

I'm afraid i can only agree with this and other replies re any up and coming Apple pricing ie you just know it'll be extortionate, they'll be way more overpriced than every single other offering and yet still have all the Apple trolls salivating. Each to their own i guess..

When you want an apple, goto the grocery store. When you want an all in one package that won't over heat and set on fire; trust anything but fruit.

funny how people know its ridiculous, but then once it comes out, and has a shiny new look that no other tv has, its worth the extra 2k to them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these things will be way over priced and not even compare to quality HDTV's. They should just stick with their iPods/iPhones, and their low performance (overpriced) Mac's.

Not only will they be way overpriced, but you'll probably have to have it connected to the internet so it can constantly "phone home" similar to their itunes software. No thanks.
I'm getting pretty sick of this trend. I don't really want corporations or anyone else for that matter knowing what I'm listening to, or watching, and when.

As much as I like the Apple iPhone, I'll pass on this. I'm quite happy with my Panasonic HDTV & Sony Blu-ray player combo for my HD entertainment.

As I read the article the same thoughts went through my head. However, just maybe they have come up with a new angle. Probably a huge touch screen.

Even if there is nothing really new, Apple Zombies will buy them because they have no minds.

I really can't see how you could get build a slow performing screen.

I wouldn't write the off right now.

  • KillerBug

It all depends on what you mean by "write it off"

I am 99% sure it will be an overpriced piece of junk, but I am also 99% sure that it will sell well (just look at their other junk products). If apple made ice, Alaskan apple fans would buy it.

I am with you on the overpriced. They get out of a market that they can't gouge you. Apple Zombies would buy and love their pet rocks if they sold them. I am guessing these will be insainely priced. I bet they are touch screens.

I am not so sure about the junk angle.

Lets have a little test of stereotypes...

Are you balding or shave your head for that "designer stubble all over" look?
    Do you like cappuccino?
So much that you drink it at home out of those sad instant packets?
Have you ever or do you currently like listening to REM or Sade?

If you can answer yes to 3 out of the above 4 questions you should undoubtedly buy one... they are made just for people like you XD

On second thought, this might be a good thing. People watch too much TV...having a TV made by apple should greatly cut down on how much you can watch (when it bursts into flames like an iPhone).
