Samsung to release 2TB external HDD

Samsung to release 2TB external HDD
At the ongoing IFA 2009 event, the electronics giant Samsung has announced the latest editions of their S Series external HDD line, a 3.5-inch 2TB drive, and a 2.5-inch 640GB drive. The larger drive is dubbed the S3 and the smaller the S2.

“As consumer demands continue to escalate for storing personal data, music and video files, Samsung has expanded its extensive family of external hard drives to support the growing personal storage market,” noted Cheol-hee Lee, vice president of marketing, Storage Systems Division, Samsung Electronics. “The new drives provide users with a sleek design and high-density choices in both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors.”

The S2 is the largest Samsung has ever offered in the form factor, surpassing the 500GB drive they released earlier this year. The S3 is also the largest drive offered by the company for an external drive. IDC says that 1TB drives are so far the best selling in 2009, offering the best $/GB ratio.

Both drives will include Auto Backup, SecretZone, and SafetyKey encryption and security.

The S2 will be available next week and the S3 is set for a January release.

I can say I've had quite good luck with their stuff (I bought a few HDDs and a couple ODDs over the course of 2yrs to a few months ago), and am pleased thus far. I'm waiting patiently to get my hands on a Samsung 2tb internal.

I'm waiting patiently to get my hands on a Samsung 2tb internal. That is good luck...very good luck. I used to have a raid-5 with 4 samsungs...then one died and it became a raid5 with 3 drives, then another died and it became a RAID1 with two drives, then another failed and it became one drive for temp files...then the last drive failed. This all happened in about a year, and the other drives that were there when I installed the Samsungs are still working today. I think I would trust RAM to do long-term storage before I trusted a Samsung.

Man i cant believe we will see 3TB drives shortly. Better double dip on these..i cant imagine how horrifying to drop one of these puppies during a move and lost that much data. Always have a backup drive. Put it on a shelf somewhere for the inevitable.

I have had 8 F1, 8 time 1TB, running 24/7 now for over one year (I think about 1.5 years). I had one drive broken and replaced in the meantime, which was no problem since I run in RAID6 mode.

I hope 2TB drives will appear soon, the upgrade from 1 to 1.5 is too little to justify buying 8 new drives.
