Q2 PS3 sales up significantly year-on-year, company shows large loss
According to Sony's recent quarterly earnings report, PlayStation 3 sales grew to 3.2 million in the Q2 2009 from 2.4 million in the same period in 2008.

Despite this growth, Sony saw heavy losses in the "PlayStation" division and saw sales fall severely as well. Overall, sales revenue fell 24 percent to JPY 352.6 billion. Losses grew to JPY 58.8 billion ($650 million USD).

"In the game business, the deterioration in profitability was mainly due to a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, and the impact of the appreciation of the yen," said Sony.

PS2 sales were down from 2.5 million to 1.9 million year-on-year. PSP and PS3 game sales were up about 10 percent each and PSP hardware sales fell from 3.2 million to 3 million. The big loser was PS2 software which a drastic 52 percent decline, from 23.2 million to 11.1 million.

I think the PS2s are coming to an end because the PS3 is only $300 now. Still a lot more than a PS2 but you get so much more with it. Debt increases because I bet they don't make as much when they sell a PS3 than a PS2....

I'd be interested to see some kind of cumulative report of the PS3 and if they've even made any money at all with it. It seems like every month the news update is $X million loss.

Bomber, Sony has lost $3 billion so far on the PS3, just like MS did on the Xbox.

Sounds like the biggest loss is because of reduced PS2 sales...sales that are being intentionaly crippled by sony who long ago dissabled PS2 support on the PS3...serves them right.

I have a few minutes to post (just moved into my new house and got LOTS of unpacking and stuff to finish!) so I will just quote another poster from another place ~

Quote:Here's the original NeoGAF post this article got their info from.

    http://neogaf.net/forum/showpost.php?p=18269957&postcount=75

Sony has lost $4.6 billion since the PS3's inception.
Microsoft has lost $3 billion since the 360's inception. <don't know if that includes RROD, Disc scratching, E74 etc ~ Oner>

Sony made $2.2 billion with the PS2.
Microsoft lost $3.6 billion with the original Xbox. <last I read it was 7 billion but the original poster also didn't link to documents for his 3.6 statement ~ Oner>

Total from last gen and this gen:
    Sony
    $2.2 - $4.6 = -$2.4 billion

    Microsoft
    -$3 - $3.6 = -$6.6 billion <could be more if it is 7 billion as stated by me above ~ Oner>

As you can see, Microsoft is in no better position than Sony. In fact, I'd say worse as the math proves it.
That also does not include the current losses/profits from PSP & the ending profits from the PS1. Wish I had more time to be able to delve a little deeper into other info like linking to supporting documentation for the 7 billion loss with the original Xbox and such. I could be mistaken and am going off memory combined with being all "detatched" from the net the last few days and will be limited for the next few weeks as I finish the tasks from my move, so I do appologize if some of my info is "iffy" under my circumstances...

The microsoft loss numbers also do not include "games for windows" revenues lost to both 360 and PS3.

You missed the fact that microsoft has made $595 million in 2008 and 2007 whereas sony has lost over $1.65 billion (denominations may be incorrect, I did the maths pretty quickly).

    Also, I like this:

Quote:As of FY 2010 Q1, Sony are now reporting the results for the re-organised division "Networked Products & Services" rather than the old method of reporting for the gaming division.

"Sony said it will combine its VAIO personal-computer, Walkman and PlayStation businesses in the Networked Products & Services Group to focus on creating gadgets that can work with each other and connect to the Internet."
Seems like sony is hiding something...
