Microsoft increases anti-piracy efforts worldwide
Microsoft noted this week that they had launched over 300 "enforcement actions," such as lawsuits and raids in an effort to crackdown on rampant piracy of the company's software.

The actions took place in 70 different nations around the world. The software giant has also created nine "forensics labs" in different cities used to detect pirated software.

Twelve raids took place in China, with the China Copyright Administration raiding companies charged with alleged counterfeiting of software. A lawsuit was also filed against a Chinese "system builder for hard-disk loading piracy."

Significant legal actions were filed in India against pirated software sellers, many of whom were selling counterfeit Windows 7 discs for under $5 USD.

Microsoft acknowledges that only a tiny amount of bottom line sales come from nations outside of North America and Western Europe however it needs giant developing markets such as India and China to lead future growth.

From the nightly news (if they did their homework):
"Today Microsoft declaired that piracy is bad and that no one should be able to do it. In an unrelated story, microsoft has now bought off every judge in the country so that they can freely pirate whatever they want."

    Dear China and other places,

Please stop pirating bad software and promote the use of free software.

turns out that in a movie (yes, we got the d00d on film) Bill Gates admitted pirating software in the 1980's.

Personally, I will NEVER buy a Microsoft product. MS is overpriced crapware. Unfortunately, I have to use Win XP Pro for my media Center, however I did not purchase it.....It is a corporate edition I made a copy of at my former workplace.

The ONLY piece of ligitiment software I own is Mac OS X Snow Leopard.....$29 for an OS.....I think MS needs to rethink their pricing.....Software needs to be REASONABLY priced for the masses to afford.....not just the rich or upper middle income groups.....what about us that are technically living within the poverty level? You don't want ppl to pirate software? Then make it affordable to the masses!

Snow Leopard is only $29 if you UPGRADE and it doesn't have the greatest of reviews anyways. How you can call yourself poor and then purchase a Mac with Snow Leopard that absolutely cost hundreds of dollars more then a Windows 7 machine, even one with i7 and better specs.

i agree! i would actually buy my operating system if it was reasonable. like the price of a video game that Msoft licenses for its own Xbox.

i like windows 7 for example. but after playing with it further. i have learned its stripped of many programs that came with Vista. hell even with XP. and i downloaded the Ultimate Version. i think i'll stick with my OEM copy of Vista ultimate that came with my Dell.

seriousy are u that thick headed?! I got my MavBook Pro as a gift! You ppl are the ones prone to viruse and malware, us mac useres are not.....Ive been running OSX for 2 years now and will NEVER go back to crapware MS sells!

MacOS is just a modded Linux...and Linux is meant to be a free OS...so MacOS is a rip-off too.

LOL, seriously I about fell out of my chair reading this.....least build a hackintosh, then you will be halfway to a decent system! The last OS they made was Vista, not XP. XP was not a good OS...people seem to think it is, but it was never very good; only better than Vista. Windows 7 is way, way better. Using MacOS with non-mac hardware is technicaly violating the software agreement; you might as well just pirate windows if you are going to do that.

As for the price...I did not like giving microsoft $250...but it got me 30 licences for windows 7 (as well as 10 licenses for everyhing they have made in the last ~10 years)...so they cost less than $9 each! If you have some friends to share the package with, then Windows 7 is a lot cheaper than MacOS. On top of that, windows comes with features that Apple charges extra for...the remote desktop app that is built into windows pro/ultimate for free is a $500 upgrade for OSX!

-I would use a Mac if I got it for free too, just like I would use many things if I got it for free, and it would STILL be secondary to my Win 7 build.

-Hackintoshes are ILLEGAL to build. Ask Psystar if you don't believe.

    - You have never tried Windows 7, that's almost a 100 percent guarantee. Maybe you tried XP on your parent's P3 tower with 256MB ram and hated it.

-I haven't had a virus in 4 years, and that is with using XP, Vista and now Win 7. Most smart Windows users don't ever get viruses either. Mac OS X isn't prone to malware and viruses because it's not worth it for virus writers to waste time. Your 6 percent market share is so terrifying.

-My $49 Win 7 upgrade disc works as a full install too, and I have the 32 and 64-bit discs, wow!

If we could all give Microsoft $250 for 10 legal copies of Win7 & some of the other stuff, there wouldn't be much pirating. A full copy of Win7 ultimate is $399 at our "discount" software house.
