Motorola Droid wins 'Time Gadget of the Year' honors

Time Magazine today named the Motorola Droid its Gadget of the Year, giving the smartphone a victory over the Apple iPhone as well as other innovations of 2009.

The first smartphone to use Android 2.0 firmware, the powerful device has a large touchscreen, a QWERTY keypad, 5MP camera, an Arm Cortex A8 processor at 550 mHz and 16GB memory. The iPhone 3GS came in fourth place, mainly for its continued evolution and the popularization of "augmented reality" applications.



Also on the list were the new ultraportable Dell Adamo XPS, the Nook e-reader, a couple of innovative cameras and more.

  Take that Apple...we have something better than the iPhone.
  And take it again...we has something better than the macbook Air..
  And take that Amazon...this reader does not delete the books you buy, and has free books too!

  It does not matter how much award the droid win, it will never be the IPHONE. Every carrier wants the Iphone, Who wants the Droid?

  the head nerd at wired went on late night with Jimmy Fallon with the droid and said the average person doesn't really care about android being open source.
  
  i highly disagree, my friend found a nice app online that lets him download any of the top 40 songs of the moment for free. for anything that sweet on the iphone you'll need to jail break it. the iphone is just too nickle and dimed in my opinion.
  the goal of approving an app isnt to get tools to the public that they could really use, its to get apps to the public that they will buy, apps dont get approved unless money will be made off of them, or they wont interfere with another paid app that is currently making money, it retards the natural selection of good apps coming to the market quick. nothing gets onto the iphone without apple taking a huge greedy cut.
  
  people dont care about open source, but in half a year when all the android people are living it up and not paying a dime to get quality content the iphoners are going to get pretty jealous. mark my words the iphone OS will go open source in a few years, they wont have a choice, and then android and iphone OS will compete like apple and MS do in the pc market.

MS barely feels Apple's OSX as competition to Windows. OSX represents less than 5% of all computers in the world!
  
  On the flipside, the same can be said for the iPhone against the Droid. How many countries is the Droid available in? How many phones with Android are there versus the iPhone? Seems to me Apple kickstarted the smartphone revolution for consumers the same way RIM did for business.

It did nothing revolutionary, and came out as a edge-only phone when there were other 3G smartphones for the same price...WinMo phones sucked at the time, but the first-gen iPhone was a piece of trash too...the 3G was better, but it was outdated before release, and the 3GS is built so poorly that it is a fire hazard. It was all marketing and a name brand that people will buy without doing any research...that is where apple shines...a name brand built of lies, ignorance, and a few dedicated MAC users who don't know that a PC can do the same tasks better, while also doing things that are impossible on OSX. If people want to keep buying $200 phones with 2-year contracts without doing the slightest bit of research, then I say they deserve what they get.

  Interesting devices on the list. For some reason i am attracted to the Dell Laptop just to try it. Personally ive always disliked Dell products but i would love to test this out. I never understand why u would get a ebook it just becomes harder to read you get tired eyes faster.
  When it comes to reading nothing beats the old school book.
  Dr Dre endorsed headphones what a classic :) lol
  ohh the fan was great too no actual blades would love to test that as well.
  Great inventions.

  i dont liek the iphone aswell (palm pre fanboy here (open sourceness ftw)) BUT the iphone is very much revolutionary. noone before it had managed to perfect user experiance the way the iphone did. the way they implemented the touch screen on the 1st gen iphone was fantastic, then, fair enough, the 2nd gen was jsut a case change and 3G added to it, but it also bought the 2nd most revolutionary to the main stream, which was the app store, and then 3rd gen they gave it a HUGE speed increace, with both the GPU and the CPU, (and more ram IICR) (though the palm pre came out with that CPU jsut befeor the 3GS).
  
  
  lets not kidd our selves, the iphone has distrupted the market as big as the razer V3 did etc.
  
  BUT its still crap LOL
