Nine Inch Nails offers 405GB of free HD concert footage, fans make free Blu-ray, DVD
In March 2009, Nine Inch Nails went around the U.S. for the Lights In The Sky Tour and because they somehow could not get a professional capture team for a commercial release, they released 405GB of free raw HD footage from the tours to their fans, allowing them to do what they please with it. Today, the group This One Is On Us has released their creation, in literally every format you could ever need, for free.

The full post:

Our 2008 Lights In The Sky tour was an ambitious multimedia production on a scale well beyond anything we'd ever attempted before. Everyone involved was extremely proud of how it came together, and we were devastated when, for a variety of reasons, we were unable to capture it professionally for a theatrical or commercial release. As a "plan B" of sorts, early last year we released a massive 405gb free download of raw HD footage captured at three different shows during the tour. The idea was to get the footage out in the wild and see what our notoriously enterprising fans could do with it. There were no rules. No strings attached. This was a gift, and an experiment, and for the past year we've watched it come to life in more ways than we could have ever imagined.

Fans have edited thousands of videos from the footage, assembled their own DVDs and live albums, even held theatrical screenings of their creations. And now, the ambitious and well-organized group known as This One Is On Us have released their massive, highly-anticipated creation, Another Version of the Truth: The Gift.

For 12 months, a core team of dozens of fans and a network of thousands spanning the entire globe pooled their efforts to create this professional-quality 1080p 5.1 concert film, and have released it in every format from Blu-ray and DVD to iPod and YouTube. It combines footage from all three shows and includes DVD menus, bonus footage, a PDF booklet, and more. That something of this scale was produced entirely by fans, on their own time, purely for the sake of giving something back to the community, is absolutely unprecedented. You can read all about the project and find all the download links here, or watch it immediately on YouTube here. Theatrical screenings are already being organized, you can find more info about those here.

This is yet another example of a devoted fanbase and a policy of openness combining to fill in blanks left by old media barriers. The entire NIN camp is absolutely thrilled that treating our fans with respect and nurturing their creativity has led to such an overwhelming outpour of incredible content, and that we now have such a high quality souvenir from our most ambitious tour ever. Or, as Trent simply put it, "Nine Inch Nails fans kick ass."

Wow! Trent and his band have been at the forefront of interacting with their support base and really pushing what is really possible with tech and vision and the motivated people involved. Impressive, most impressive.

Here we see the future.. these guys don't need the music business any more.. just a fanbase and a love for music.. the real reason for learning to play an instrument in the first place.

Keep it going on Trent and co .. I bought your first disk back when..

And the fans will always pay for the music (at least some of them) because of how well the band has treated their fans...can't say the same for Metallica, U2, etc..

Trent Reznor has always been a pioneer of sorts. First of Industrial Rock and now of P2P.

    Kudos, Trent!

I'm not a NIN fan by any stretch of the imagination but this is very cool. Maybe more bands will follow what Trent & Co. are doing and stick it to the record labels.

Saw Metallica this past November and then discovered they were selling full live recordings of EVERY concert stop on the web for $10 (and it's the equivalent of a double CD in content.) They even included album artwork, etc. for download.

I know it's not free, but its a step in the right direction away from the labels. $10 to revisit that night over and over was a fair price and I'm sure others would say the same.

    @SProdigy
Problem still being that you cannot share your own content that has something borrowed from those $10 disks and i think that was the point. If you do metallicops will soon be behind your door.. or at least small army of RIAA/MPAA lawyers.

$10 is a step in the right direction and I agree with SProdigy now it would be nice if it was less DRM but at least Metalica is waking up a bit.

I've always liked Trent he is a one man band and is great, with a little help of computers of course.

Yeah but without that music business how many fans would they have right now?

I got the source files from the NIN site months ago, did 2 weeks of editing on it and made a DVD and blu-ray months ago, Since NIN allowed us to give it out for free it was a cool thing to do, letting people download it was the problem since the files are really big.
