CES 2010: Philips Blu-ray players to add DivX Plus HD
DivX has announced that upcoming Philips Blu-ray players will include DivX Plus HD, allowing for playback of the HD video, in the MKV container. When the players hit Europe in April, Philips will be the first to offer the feature.

The devices will play all content created using the DivX software. More notably, the HD technology can support authored chapter points, quick start, 32x fast forward and rewind, high-quality AAC audio, 8 subtitle and alternate audio tracks, and metadata.

There are a number of sites that will begin offering pay-for downloads of movies in the format, and the new players will finally get the HD tech off the computer and onto the TV.

Just to clarify it a little more, DivX Plus HD certification means the device will at the very least be able to play H.264 videos with AAC audio in the MKV container within our profile, along with the previous DivX files you may have (.divx/.avi). So it's a layer on top of the previous DivX certification.

We have published profile information at our developer portal:
    http://developer.divx.com

There, you'll also find settings on how to make DivX Plus compatible files with x264. Staxrip already implemented these presets, so now, in addition to DivX 7, you've got several software choices for making your own DivX Plus HD files, along with support for DivX content you can buy from Filmfresh and CinemaNow.

You can hit me up at DivX Labs if you have more questions, but we're excited to see MKV support in Philips these devices :-)
