'Avatar' is highest grossing film of all-time
Earlier this week we reported that Avatar was set to become the highest grossing film of all-time.

Today, that has come true, with the movie surpassing Titanic as the highest grossing film of all-time (not adjusted for inflation.)

Gregg Brilliant, of 20th Century Fox, said "Avatar" now stands at $1.859 billion in global sales, beating out Titanic's $1.843 billion from 1998.

The movie is the highest grossing in Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Britain and Australia as well, and is one its way to breaking the American record of $600 million, likely this week.

I would also like to know how long each movie spent in theaters and adjust it for that as well. It seems with each year movies spend less and less time between the theatrical and media (DVD/Blu-Ray) release.

In regards to the film, I enjoyed it a lot. I've seen it twice and might go see it a few more times before I wait for the Blu-Ray release.

Yeah... and it was a good article. I didn't mean anything by it... just that being on top of that list is pretty much exactly how the movie studios want it...
The whole "Top Grossing" and "Top Grossing adjusted for inflation" argument has been around forever and will never be solved. (you should read the discussion page at Wikipedia)

Suffice it to say that while Avatar is doing great... given a few years another "blockbuster" will come along and then it will move on down the list like Titanic, ET, Star Wars... etc.
The studios want you to believe that their latest and greatest IS the greatest, so they love this.

Avatar is a great film in 3D, the first real 3d I've ever seen, it has a great storyline, I can think of some real life scenarios, where the indigenous were decimated, just read some history, but this film shows them fighting back, and winning. But the 3D was the best feature, although the theatre I saw it at had a crappy sound system.

For me it's really a non-issue, if Gone with the Wind sold $6 billion worth of 2009 tickets so be it. However, I still would not consider Avatar tops just yet, as I don't think Titanic was available in IMAX or IMAX 3D which average $15 a ticket. Avatar set the record for IMAX and 3D ticket sales.

I thought this movie was so cheesy. All the inovation was behind the camera, but the on-screen result wasn't anything ground breaking. If you've played a video game in the last 10 years you didn't really see anything new. This movie will win all kinds of awards because according to the entertainment industry, popular money-maker = quality film.
