Analysts expect iPad to sell 1-5 million units in first year
AppleInsider has put together a strong list of what Wall Street analysts are expecting for the newly launched Apple iPad tablet, and the consensus seems to be 1 million to 5 million units in its first year for the "risky" device.

Needham & Company says the iPad is "another winner." RBC Capital Markets, judging by the general unenthusiastic reaction from the tech community says: "Not everyone initially liked the Ten Commandments either -- but they endured." RBC continues that: "With iPad, Apple creates a revolutionary e-reading, browsing, media, gaming experience. Newspapers, Web pages, books 'come alive' with video, animation, color and fullscreen touch." The lack of a camera, the inability to multi-task applications and no Verizon compatibility is disappointing, they add, but don't see it being a dealbreaker.

Kaufman Bros. says the cheap, Wi-Fi only version will be the best seller, with the AT&T 3G version selling for too high of a premium.

Oppenheimer
analyst Yair Reiner calls the iPad "a revolutionary new media device," and expects 1.1 million units sold in its first year.

Broadpoint.AmTech says the cheapest version of the iPad costs Apple about $300 to create, so a selling price of $499 should reap in good profits for the company's bottom line. The more expensive models will bring in up to 55 percent operating margin.

All analysts expect Apple to ship 10 million by the end of 2011.

Have no need for one, but I think it will be interesting to see how well it sells.

Lol, 1 million to 5 million...give or take a few million. Where did they get these numbers from?

I don't see this selling. I've seen a lot of posts even on CNET (people who are very biased towards Apple products), and the majority are simply disappointed and not interested. I think these analysts are just creating more false hype for a poor/overpriced product.

Analysts believe there are actually 1 to 5 million people actually dumb enough to buy this? My next question, how many shares of stock do these analysts own in apple? Maybe that's harsh, if you like to rent your media, buy apple.

With the DRM products like this have in place, all you'll ever do is rent.

I might consider getting a slate when it comes out...
This thing is locked to AT&T, has no SD support (without a giant adapater), no multitasking, and it does not even have flash support! I honestly don't know what this thing is for...the only thing it does that the more affordable, more functional iPhone does not is the ebooks...and the kindle is a fraction of the price. Sure the screen is bigger than an iPod...but if you can't do anything with it, who cares how big the screen is?

I think it's cool, but still, for $500, you're getting only 16gb, no flash enabled web surfing, no multi-tasking...

Yeah guys.. I thought so too.. more like a netbook/laptop without a keyboard... plus you can treat it like any other piece of hardware. I will keep an eye on how it goes.. especially the reported G3 capability for the full production release.
