Microsoft to offer 250GB Xbox 360 HDD add-on in Japan

Microsoft has announced they will begin selling a 250GB HDD add-on for the Xbox 360 in Japan starting next month.

Beginning March 11th, the drive will cost ¥15,540 (about $172 USD).



The drive marks the largest stand-alone unit ever available for the console.

Microsoft has no plans to sell the drive outside of Japan, adds spokesperson Kei Iwasaki, so it seems that North American and European gamers will have to stick to the smaller stand-alone units Microsoft has available in their regions.

The Xbox 360 Elite has 120GB of internal storage.

  What is the major performance difference between a Caviar and a Scorpio, especially if not used for boot/OS install, just storage? I see them are even cheaper...

  A Scorpio is a WD hard disk that is 2.5 inches while a Caviar is a WD drive that is 3.5 inch.
  
  $172.00 is a rip-off when you consider the price of hard disks nowadays.
  
  If it was an SSD, then $172.00 WOULD be a bargain.

  Yep, i had to have the 2.5 SATA laptop HD. Could not use the 3.5. It is ok, i had around 4 years worth of BB Reward Zone points that i used on it.

  US has to stick with the 120 drives....right. ive been rocking my 250 since forza 3 dropped in the UK. and it only cost me 60 bucks to make myself.

  Hacked 250 GB in my 360 (the WD SATA one that is compatible). It costed me $45 and like an hour at most of time.

  Ok, and why this is in Japan only confuses me. Last I checked the main market and successful market is North America/Europe. Microsoft needs to get with the program because they overprice, don't know how to stimulate console sales and lack the necessary games to make the 360 apart from the competition. Sony is picking up steam..and doing stuff like making it Japan only is really stupid! And stop overpricing, Sony doesn't even do that.

  250 gb for $172 is still a lot of money, regardless where's going to be sold. Anyway, custom hdd upgrade for the Xbox 360 is the way to go, but the whole thing about banning got me worried.
