PS3 firmware update 3.20 to include 3D video output option

VG247 has come upon some screenshots of the debug build of the upcoming PlayStation 3 firmware update, version 3.20, which shows that 3D video output will soon be an option.

With developers now testing the 3.20 update, it shouldn't be too long until it hits gamers, likely within the next couple of months.



The new leak follows what Sony's John Koller confirmed last month, that "It’s gonna take just a simple firmware update which most people do regularly anyway, and that’s all it’s gonna take to accolade the PS3 to 3D gaming."

Users will of course need a 3D-capable HDTV and 3D glasses, which many consider a gimmick, but it is nice to know the option will be there, regardless.

  hate the part that my 1year old lcd t.v is not going to be supported :( :(
  
  and i would not spend money for a 3d t.v ill wait for oled that goign to be carzyyy!!

  how many games support 3d? 0 zero nilch nadda .....
  i can see this as a bonus for 3d blu-rays but does the ps3 blu ray read those? maybe this is so they can only sell 3d content through the psn. as far as i know you cant just hook up a 3dhdtv and expect to play metal gear in 3d. thats just what i think, anyone know if the ps3 can even read 3d blu rays?

  ROFL its gonna be a long time till most people get 3D TV's.
  
  I was watching the Mass Effect 2 problem video they had on Yahoo! with people who play in Standard Definition, and they had a statistic from LRG only "46% of households in the US has at least 1 HDTV"
  
  Its still a cool idea, its just that only rich people are gonna have it.

It was designed to be upgradeable and several higher capacity formats are being developed. There's no physical limitation of existing drives to access the discs, but devices may need firmware updates.

  I haven't updated since 2.80 - And will not until Sony gives serious attention to issues of the optical media drives no longer working after 3.x firmware updates (i.e. Which models are most likely to be affected and why).
  
  Not to mention, many comments on the PS3 blog firmware posts say that Sony has scaled back on supported video formats during the 3.x updates.
  
  Given these and no hurry to go 3D, I may stay with 2.80 for quite some time to come. The only one losing IMHO is Sony, since I no longer have access to the PS Store. ;)

  I really just want the old startup back. I had to update my PS3 several times in the past, and I couldn't play online until I had. And guess what - I couldn't care less about the updates I've gotten. They just waste my time and PS3 space, because I will never use them. I really just want the old startup back...

  Instead of this 3D crap they're going to shove in consumer's faces, why not have custom soundtracks, or even better yet 1080p support for the MAJORITY of their games (like the XBox 360), not just a select few. This turned me away from the PS3, fix these, and I'll jump on the PS3 bandwagon, if not, then all guess I'll just have to wait until the next generation console heat up again (sigh). - BLUEBOY

Many of them are 720p upscaled to 1080p, but only a handful are actually 1920x1080 rendering. PS3 has relatively few too, but not much less than 360 titles.

  Not everyone will have to get a new "3D TV" for this...they have been making 3D TVs for years without the "3D" branding. I have a couple of 3-year-old screens that will do 3D just fine. Sure, a lot of people bought cheap, slow TVs...but these are generaly the same people who would refuse to spend money on 3D gear anyway.
  
  However, 3D will not become the standard any time soon. Ignorming the massive collections of 2D media and virtualy non-existant collection of 3D media, the technology is still holding it back. That is not to say it cannot be done with today's technology, but rather that it cannot be done cheaply and in good quality.
  
  BTW...anyone else suckered into buying the new final desintation 3D? It came with those old 1950's style 3D glasses!

  In my opinion 3D is just a fad! Just like when it was hot in the 70's and a again breifly in the 80's. I am not a fan, like all my movies in the old 2D method. Besides when they make a movie (or game?) in 3D they always have those really hokey come at the screen shots that just seem awkward and out of place. Just opinion though!

  By 3D-capable HDTVs, do they mean the new 3D HDTVs coming down the pipe or do they mean HDTVs with 120hz and 3D glasses?
  
  I read somewhere that all you need to go 3D is a pair of 3D glasses and a HDTV with 120hz and higher(the frames are sped up to fool the eyes, hence make the viewer seeing 3D images). Is this true? If that's the case then most people already have a 3D HDTV, just need the 3D glasses...

  almost all the 3D-ready tvs out this summer seem to have their own processors to upscale to stereoscopic 3D. the tv screens are still flat so there is not much difference. why cant the ps3 use its excess processors to upscale to 3D without the need for an expensive TV.
  
  then again its all about making money isnt it, and if the ps3 could ouptut 3D video to a normal screen then it would loose money wouldnt it.

  Well first off, only a few of you even know what u r talking about. U wine about how much u love technology but scream Rape when it advances to expand a current console's capability. Hello, welcome to reality. People evolve and with them, the desire to do more with the tools they have. If any of you did any research versus shouting incorrect info like your Hitler preaching about a Master Race, you would know that Best Buy has Samsung 3D Shutter Glasses going for $160. Also, Sony & Samsung 3DTV's are going 2b able to upscale 2D to 3D. It's not going to be as good, but the same can be said for HD players Upscaling SD video (Dvd). Nextly, the "3D" Tv's are all 240hz. Giving u 120hz per eye. The details about the Samsung Glasses on Bestbuy.com indicate there will b a transmitter for the Glasses. This leads me to believe those with 240hz tv's "may" be able to view 3d. Before u all start heckeling about hdmi 1.3 vs 1.4 or whatever, know this.... The Ps3 only has 1.3 & with the 3D update it will push 3D... Wait for it.... It will be in 1080i (720p)... Still good, version 1.4 Hdmi will allow full 1080p 3D video. So in theory, if u have a 240hz tv & a ps3 that has the 3d Firmware ( all ps3's are capable of 3d)... Then u may be able to enjoy 1080i 3d with just a simple purchase of a pair of shutter glasses. Well, that's all I have, let the heckeling begin.....

  So, all i need is the new PS3 3D update and a pair of the 3D shutter glasses? I already have a HDTV set (120hz) and a PS3... That doesn't sound too bad at all. Maybe the $160 pair of glasses is a bit expensive, but i can get 2 or 3 pairs at that price, i think i'll go for it.

  3.1 fried my ps3, just after the update my system no longer recognizes blue ray discs. have tried to reset but nothing works.

  I always get my electronics from Retailers who offer Service or Replacement Plans. When updates or other crap impact my PS3 or other Electronics, I take them back to that retailer & get them replaced at no extra charge. Of course you want to back up ur data before doing the exchange. Usually covers 2 years.

Most 120fps HDTV TVs to date receive signal with 60fps and double that, by constructing and inserting additional images between the frames. These TVs are not appropriate for 3D.
  
  New 3D HDTVs come with HDMI 1.4 and receive 120fps video. They work with their own (compatible) pair of glasses. Some of these TVs shall use the active-shutter lens technology, while others will use (passive) polarization lenses (like those we use in cinemas).
  
  In other words, most people will have to buy a new TV set to enjoy 3D.
