Google now allowed to buy and sell electricity
Google has had their request to become an electricity marketer accepted today by U.S. energy regulators, allowing the search giant to begin buying and selling bulk power.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission backed Google's application, reads the WSJ, allowing the company to become a market-based rate authority. Google's application stated that it does not own any generators or transmission lines, and will not use its position for retail purposes.

Most marketers are utility or power generator companies, but a few corporations, like Kimberly-Clark, have been granted the authority as well, given the large amount of power they use. Google says it will use the title to manage its own energy supplies, and to "gain better access to renewable power."

"We made this filing so we can have more flexibility in procuring power for Google's own operations, including our data centers. FERC authority will improve our ability to hedge our purchases of energy and incorporate renewables," adds Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick.

Google is just becoming an absolute monster, not saying its a bad thing. I'm just wondering why their founders are selling off such large blocks of their stock.
A monster in good hands is one thing, in the wrong hands its another.

Thanks for the tip, been watching said documentary, am up to the part where Enron Traders would literally ring up power plants and ask them to shut down the plants. And they just did it when asked. Unbelievable.
What gets me is all the talk in the news lately forewarning of supposed power outages, makes you wonder if this kind of thing will start happening again. Google are into way too many pies now, just the other day we had loads of news articles about Google working with the NSA, and we're getting all the news articles about alleged threats to cybersecurity, all at the same time that Google is having trouble with China and the US government are making lots of noise about Internet2...

I did, just in passing though, didn't know too many specifics, certainly didn't realise traders could just phone up the power plants and get half the state's power shutoff on a whim. Just finished watching it, quite an eye opener, especially how many people were affected by less people than we have fingers.
And is anyone still interested in having their power (and internet connection) provided by Google ?. Didn't think so :p
