I dont understand there are so many other phones out there. That has great apps and such i just dont get it maybe because i tend to lean away from the mainstream of things and do and buy what i like instead of what everybody eles is doing and buying. But hey if it sells that well it must be something.Iam not hating on the iphone its just been so long since this phone came out and its still on top in a market that is loaded with other great choices,Its not like the console market where there are 3 choices there has to be hundreds if not more smartphones out there,to choose from i just think the hype is in the I name plate.

An easy way to understand it simply and straight forward is that the iPhone was just years ahead of oher smartphones here in the united states. I thought exactly as you as being skeptical of the iPhone thnking it was just a gimmick of succes bc of the touchscreen capabilities. Others followed with their own touchscreen phones but still the iPhone would receive the majority of the best reviews. Years past as you statedans I noticed it's popularity continued to grow. The phone isnot that good is what I kept telling myself. Can't be, no way as I listened to music on my blackberry curve. Then the the competition stiffened aiming soley at the iPhone. Palm pre, oh no!...the DROID does things the iPhone can't which phon do I choos
now that my contract is up??????? Researched multiple websites reviews from cnet to phonescoops, went to YouTube and checked out what the people had to say as they compared it head to head with blackbery storm, the Droid etc. Now multiple android based phones flood the market. Uh oh ...! found out the biggest baddest wolf to date didnot have as much an edge on the iPhone after you jailbreak your iPhone. It has taken years for the rest of the world to catch up with the iPhone but stil test show it still has the best touchscreen response of all the newcomers. Lol it took me a long time to come to the conclusion that the iPhone was truely that far superior to all others and e ergo e else is just now catching up. Yeah iPhone has it's cons as well does any other smartphone but still it's at one of the best if not the best on the market. Now that the droid and some othrs are truely up to par with it's master now Apple is holding back about a huge new update they are estatically praising that they claim will again seperate the boys from the men.

You know what? I don't doubt Apple anymore after being one of their biggest critics.

Your article title is inaccurate and misleading

The headline contradicts the thrid sentence. How could Apple be the top shipped smartphone, when it's listed in third place both in the article here, and also within the smartphone chart of your source, the Gartner Group?

[url=http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1306513] Check Table 2, titled "Worldwide Smartphone Sales to End Users by Operating System in 2009"

iPhone is a great phone, no doubt about that, but the facts don't seem to add up, unless there's a criteria not mentioned in the article.

I think the article is saying the iPhone is the top phone in sales but then switches gears and then puts the number comparisons for the OS of each phone.

Such as iPhone is the only smartphone with the Apple OS but you can get Android on numeruos phones so thearetically the Droid could have less phone sales than the iPhone but possibly have a larger share of the market when comparing OS bc the Droid isnot the only phone with the Android OS.

Think I cofused myself with all the droid and android talk. Lol

Still, the iPhone and the Apple OS numbers should be the same, since you can't have one without the other (in an amount worth reporting anyways, there are hacked iPhones running other OS's). The iPhone 'could' be the topped shipped DEVICE with 24.89m, but all that means is people have more choice with other mobile OS's, which is a good thing. Not everyone will like the Touch Pro running Windows Mobile, so they might pick the Touch Pro 2, or they might get it anyways and put Android on it, like I did. And yes, it works. Statistics 101, you can make numbers show anything, and most of the time, you NEVER show the whole story...

    Thanks to everyone that responded.

I would say that there would be a better chance of discussing semantics if there were a difference in words. In the headline, the text of the article, and the Gartner Group article, the operative word is are "smartphone".

    Eg:
"Apple shipped 24.89 million iPhone units in 2009, making it the top shipped smartphone for the year."

"Phones with the Symbian OS remained on top with 80.88 million units shipped"

Now, this article seems to indicate that the Symbian Phones were not smartphones, but this contradicts the information on the Gartner Group page, table 2, which explicitly says:

"Worldwide Smartphone Sales to End Users by Operating System in 2009 "

It has the same # of phone sales as listed in this article.

At the same time, Apple is listed as #3 in that table, not #1.

This discrepancy does deserve to be addressed, by the author or the site.

People are better served by accurate reporting, don't you think?
