NewEgg confirms it shipped hundreds of 'fake' core i7 processors
HardOCP had an interesting report over the weekend in which they proclaimed that NewEgg buyers had been receiving counterfeit Core i7 microprocessors, and today Intel and the retailer have confirmed the reports.

Users had reported receiving packages that contained a "huge hunk of plastic" where normally a fan would have been, as well blank manuals, and guide documentation that was full of obvious errors. The processor itself is described as just a "hunk of metal," with no pinouts, making it useless.

Intel has confirmed: "Intel has been made aware of the potential for counterfeit i7 920 packages in the marketplace and is working to how many and/or where they are being sold. The examples we have seen are not Intel products but are counterfeits. Buyers should contact their place of purchase for a replacement and/or should contact their local law enforcement agency if the place of purchase refuses to help."

The number shipped is still unclear, but estimates are in the 200-300 range.

NewEgg has issued a statement as well:
"Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units. Our customer service team has already begun proactively reaching out to the affected customers. In line with our commitment to ensure total customer satisfaction, we are doing everything in our power to resolve the issue as soon as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers."

Too bad the issue wasn't caught sooner, but it was their supplier's error, not Newegg's and they are one of the BEST places to buy computer stuff online.

And to complain about them charging tax where they are legally required to is retarded!

Newegg is still my favorite place for computer parts. This does not reflect negative. I can see how a company could ship dummy boxes by error, who actually opens each box?

Just wait till they put a office in your state and you have to pay sales tax thats so high that even their specials can not make you break even shopping there.

Newegg is a good site and all but once they put a office in TN its not worth shopping their 90% of the time now...

I say the same, DEMO boxes!!! That's a laugh, nice cover up in deed. I could see if there was just a fake fan to show through the rear window, but a blank manual, fake CPU, and all kinds of misspelling on the box. That is a counterfeit if I have ever seen one. I have always done my shopping through NewEgg as well, but they need to man up and check there resources of where they get their product instead of covering for them, before they lose trust in their repeat customers.

Except your declaration says you would never buy from them having to pay TN sales tax regardless of whether it was still a good deal or not! If you absolutely refuse to pay sales tax, do you avoid buying ANYTHING locally? I have to pay sales tax on anything I buy from Amazon (~9%), but sales tax is just something I have to consider, like shipping charges, in the total cost of something I'm interested in purchasing. I don't automatically avoid them JUST BECAUSE I'd have to pay sales tax.

BTW, IPEX was the distributor who sent these to Newegg and Newegg has terminated their relationship with them over this incident.

I stopped shopping a newegg after they shipped me a defective part and I had to pay return shipping and a $80 restocking fee. They probably sold it to someone else, who then also had to pay a $80 restocking fee...I bet they sold it to a dozen people, then returned it to the manufacturer for a full refund. This was not the first problem I had with them. They also sold me fake flash several times, and the cost of initial shipping, return shipping, and restocking fee totaled to more than the price of the flash!

Amazon is much nicer...they will pay the return shipping on anything, even if it is perfectly fine, but I just don't want it anymore. No restocking fees, and they even refund the original shipping! On top of that, the selection is better!

Newegg's only advantage is their power-search feature, but it works poorly, and it only works on the paltry selection that newegg has. If you must use newegg, use it to find the part number you want...then order it from a good site.

I've spent thousands of dollars at Newegg over the years. A few problems, most of which were resolved excellently. A couple were not. Oh well. My overall experience with them is A+. I've actually been able to negotiate free returns with them based on how much money I've spent with them. I've turned a blind eye to the couple of bad experiences because they were of a relatively low $$ value, and I've probably saved close to $1,000 not having to pay sales tax, and I've saved a bundle on free shipping. I do still compare Amazon prices whenever I'm about to place a Newegg order, and do switch over if I can confirm that I will get it cheaper. So I'm not married to Newegg.

But I agree with Zippy...once they put an office in NY, I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the sales tax :P Right now I get the majority of my orders from NJ, and even free 2-3 day shipping comes the next day.

I had the opposite problem...amazon does not charge me sales tax, and newegg does...even though both ship from outside my state, and I don't think newegg has an office in my state.

I used to be very loyal to newegg. They always had good prices, decent shipping rates, etc. I have received a couple of items that were supposed to be "new" that were obviously "open box." My state doesn't charge sales tax so that hasn't been a problem, but I have started looking around a bit more.
Hopefully the egg pulls their head out, and starts treating their customers like they should. I guess I wouldn't be suprised to find out if this wasn't just a "supplier" problem.
I was able to ship those items back, but who needs the hassle?

I've also dealt with the egg for many years for my computer needs. I've been having more trouble recently - like returning a PSU after the 90 day warranty. It used to be easy.
I think they are trying to save money by tightening up the procedures. If you bought a system, you must return the whole system - not just the bad component. That takes a lot of cardboard boxes.
Also, I find it unnecessary to fill out all the REBATE information which they already have. Anything with a rebate is off my list these days. It's hard to keep all the numbers and dates along with all the receipts. I just stop looking and check Amazon. Rebates are a scam.
Overall, I'd recommend Amazon. They are doing a much better job.

Newegg is cool, i always buy my computer stuff from them. The customer service is great. They do carry some low end products, so you got to be careful with those.

I buy most all my PC parts there, have never had a problem in the years I've dealt with them.

Not true, you can return items easily on Newegg as well. They actually give you a free shipping label comparing to ship it yourself from Amazon.

Of course not always... but i'm saying in general, Newegg's customer service is comparable to Amazon's. Amazon used to have better custom service, but based on many "generic" responses regarding order questions, I don't see Amazon's customer service as mighty as it used to be.

Newegg may be nice to you once in a while if you beg...but with Amazon, you know returns are paid for by amazon. There is no emailing to say, "Why are you charging my $80 to return a broken part"...in fact it does not even have to be broken with Amazon, they will pay return shipping even if you just change your mind.

sales tax does become an issue to online shopping. that is one of the main reasons so many buy online.

sales tax pays for a lot of bogus junk and high salaries in local governments. plain and simple.

but what i do not agree with what so ever is the charge of sales tax on shipping. the company i last worked for had to start doing that. i personally started up a company and was told that offering a service requires no sales tax collection. shipping is a service, why do they want sales tax? load of crap to me. the shipping company has to pay tax on earnings anyway.

you pay tax to earn money, you pay tax to own things, you pay tax on those things you own when you bought them with the taxed money you used to make the purchase. soon they will tax your taxes. it is just ridiculous.

one thing that must be stopped is our tax money going to walmart to open new stores. they have the money to expand, gov shouldnt have any hand in that crap.

We need a national sales tax on goods and services then ban all other forms of taxes(no property no fica no employee) but car gas millage tax, then localize it on city(15%)/county(10%)/state(5%) and fed(5%) you filter out the money thus the problem into government and because local gov keeps the most of it the people have more sway over the money thus more control over the problems. As long as our form of government remains top heavy it will be untouchable by common people.

Sales taxes are the most regressive form of taxation currently used. It unfairly impacts those who do not have a lot of 'disposable' income because the majority of their income is used to purchase non-"discretionary" items; like food, heat, housing, clothing, etc...; the stuff you need to stay alive.

A real tax on income has to cover the loopholes the richest in society use to avoid having to pay any taxes; like having the majority of their income considered "capital gains" and then subject to the same tax evasion practices as corporate business("non-profit" subsidiaries, offshore deposits, tax evading "investments", "perqs" (company owned vacation homes, private planes, etc.).

The fairest taxes are those which impact everyone equally. An income tax which treats all income, regardless of source, as the same and then applies a progressive rate of taxation is the fairest. Those who can best afford the higher taxes, and have the highest benefit of being members of society, share the highest burden.

People used to recognize that chance and inherited wealth are the two biggest factors in a person's relative affluence, and the old concept of "Noblesse Oblige"; that the implicit economic burden of the Social Contract weighed heaviest on the Affluent, as they could best afford it without affecting their Quality Of Life. Sales taxes in practice are a unfair tax on being (at least relatively) poor.
