Sex.com domain goes up for auction, minimum bid of $1 million
Sex.com, one of the most expensive domain names on the Internet, will go up for auction on March 18th with an opening bid of $1 million.

The domain was originally purchased for under $100 in 1994, and then sold in 2006 for $14 million to Escom LLC, who could not afford the payments and then defaulted the site to DOM Partners, the lender who backed the $14 million bid.

The question remains as to whether Sex.com is worth $1 million, let alone the $14 million it sold for just a few years ago. Even so, auctioneer Richard Maltz says: "We don't know who's serious and who's not, but prospective bidders need a $1 million certified check. It should be interesting."

We will report on the final selling price on the 18th.

sex.com was the first porn site I ever visited. I was in 4th grade. Back then it was a big deal (and of course it was a kind of big deal since I was finally getting to see it). you can remember the Internet back then, the site was like this:

Pic of the Day <-- every porn site had this
Video of the day <-- the quality was horrible! Real media format of the time
Cartoon of the day <-- wth

They also had this huge Pics section and a supposedly live stream (Java applet) of some other site. Check out sex.com on the Internet archive for laughs.

And for web developers like myself, it's also a laugh to see the table based layout, horrible colour choice, and overall bad design. The whole idea was to get you to view the pictures. Who cares about design on a porn site? (Well, at least back then; nowadays porn sites are much better designed when they are new while there are many out there that still look like they're from 1999.)
