Sony 3D glasses to cost $133 in Japan

Gizmodo is reporting today that Sony Japan has announced the release of standalone shutter glasses that can be used alongside the company's upcoming 3D-supporting HDTVs.

Roughly converted from yen, the Sony TDG-BR100 and TDG-BR50 active shutter glasses will cost $133 each, with a June release date. The infrared emitter necessary to drive the glasses will cost $55 extra.

Besides the high price for the TVs themselves, the glasses are in themselves a significant investment, especially for a family with kids.

Giz does note however that Sony's prices are way above what the norm should be, and one manufacturer even says "their shutter glasses would cost about 1/4 Sony's current asking price."

I wonder if these will damage your eyes if used a lot. I always get headaches when going to 3d movies.

Well since I can't afford a tv with 3D capability, I find it only fitting that I can't afford the glasses either.

Amazing...I got a set of shutter glasses for my computer way back in the mid-90's...they were wired, but they only costed $25, and they came with 3 games and a PCI board (and they looked better than these sony ones). I'm sure we will see much cheaper versions available soon.

BTW...is this what they mean when they say, "Sony Style"

Maybe they don't include the emitter, just in case you want to wear some $133, ugly as sh*t glasses. Come to think of it, I think my grandmother owns a pair of glasses that look like these, only all black in color.

This is a stupid gimmick, I mean really who wants to wear glasses to watch TV. I got my wife Lasik surgery for her eyes several years back so she wouldn't have to wear glasses to see, and now if we were to buy a 3D TV she would have to wear glasses so she can see the effects of a 3D TV... this is such stupid idea.

It's just another big hype when they brought back 3D movies into the theaters (My Bloody Valentine, etc.), some of these type of movies did good, but it's not because of the 3D. The last time I went to a movie to watch a 3D movie was "Jaws" when I was a little kid.

Who would want to look like a geeky nerd wearing glasses to watch TV. No thanks, I rather stick to my regular L.E.D. and LCD HDTVs.

I give this 2 years and then you wont see this technology on TVs anymore... they are trying to make us look like the cartoon characters "The Jetsons" and wear stupid things to watch TV so that we can be so futuristic.

It would be so uncomfortable to watch TV with glasses or play my games... I could just see it now, "wear are my 3D glasses, I can't watch TV without them!?!?"

it is a hype but it could be a useful one. 3DTV may be a hype now but if it can evolve into something better maybe a Holographic LCD TV.

i wouldn't mind some new VR headset tech.

There are already 3D tvs that don't use the glasses; but the assembly lines are already setup to build 2D tvs...and the only difference between a "3D Ready" tv and a 2D TV is the refresh rates and the glasses.

I saw a 3D Tv in Singapore over 2 yrs a go that didn't require glasses at all!! I almost blew in my pants. The glasses version might be cheaper to develop. Who knows?

That being said, there is NO way I'm wasting money on a 3D tv! Even if you don't get headaches, which I do, who the heck want to spend 3 times the money on a tv that you have to wear glasses all the time? My wife bought me a 60" flat screen for Christmas. It's gorgeous! Forget spending 5k on a new tv! My 3 small children would destroy those glasses very fast, not to mention, there's no way I'm buying extra ones every time our friends come over to watch ! This idea is sure to go down in flames!
