Xbox 360 outsells Wii in February U.S. video game figures
The NPD Group has released their latest industry sales figures for the U.S. gaming industry, and the number were not pretty.

Overall sales fell 15 percent year-over-year to $1.48 billion, a 50 percent higher drop than even top industry analyst Michael Pachter was expecting.

"Honestly, I had expected the industry to perform somewhat better this month," adds NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "Nonetheless, strong new releases, and Easter gift-buying bodes well for industry performance in March."

Outside of the giant decline, the most notable news was that of the Xbox 360 outselling the Nintendo Wii for the first time since 2007. The 360 saw 422,000 units sold, with the Wii seeing 397,000 sold. Closely behind was the PlayStation 3 at 360,100 units sold. For handhelds, the DS/DSi blew out the PSP again, 613,200 to 133,400.

"The Xbox 360 nabbed the top-spot among the three console systems for the first time since September 2007, when Halo 3 was released,"
notes Frazier of the hardware sales. "The PS3 enjoyed a 30 percent increase over last year, even while retail supply is reported to remain constrained."

Other top industry analyst Jesse Divinich says Microsoft shouldn't be so quick to tout their victory, instead saying that Nintendo is having a supply problem (as reported here).

"Our extensive retail channel checks have all indicated that, in fact, the Nintendo Wii is in short supply. We believe February numbers reflect entirely on the Wii being supply constrained and has little to do with declining demand of the product," says Divinich.

Does anyone think they should include the iPod Touch in their numbers?

    12.3.2010 13:49 #4

not even a thought of the ipod touch should enter their minds.

Thanks for the response - and why is that, because it would decimate the DS and PSP in sales numbers? Because Apple doesn't release iPod Touch sales numbers separate from the rest of the iPod line? Or do you simply think that it's not a gaming device?

becasue there is gaming, and then "gaming", and personally i think that the itouch (im calling it that for lazy reasons :P - and yet i wrote all of this out to explain that... weird isnt it?) is a personal media player first, and gaming second. and even if most fo the people to gaem on it, most games are not to the cilbre of handheld games. ideally some sort of control system without touch is needed, to compliment the touch system, and then maybe games would be better. heres the thing as to why you can count the sales though, is that MOST (id say 90%) of the people that buy handheld consoles use them for gamign first and then as a PMP second, BUT with the itouch id say its the reverse. where most people will buy it as a PMP and then might game on it later.

    I would say the latter...
There are enough smart phones/devices more capable than the crApple's iTouch...Why not consider all of them a "gaming console"...
Why aren't PC's in the numbers, I mean, you can pretty much play any PS3/Xbox game on it, not just tetrix and casino poker...
    ...
    and all that shaffaaf said:)!

Fair enough, and a reasonable response. I bought it mainly as a music player, which backs up your point. I also bought it to have a super-portable surfing device, as all of my main sites (slashdot, ars technica and lifehacker mostly) work great on the mobile browser.
There are a few great games (Galcon, Heavy Mach, Fieldrunners, Spy Bot, Flick Fishing - and the ports of Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein 3D and Golden Axe are decent) but there is also a lot of shovelware crap, although I guess that's true for the DS and PSP as well.

    Xbox 360 - 614,696

The PlayStation 3 has the lead of almost half a million units with 1,837,997 over the 360 with 1,431,991 and this is with a clear/proven shortage for the PS3 as well as the Wii (which is why the 360 managed to outsell it).

And yet oddly every store in my town has the PS3 and Wii stocked every day of every week. Goes to show I live in a backwater town.

    Sigh...

We have every console on the shelves at Target and Wal-Mart now last I checked. The Wii had to lose steam at some point. Wow, I capitalized Steam unintentionally. It has no great games at the moment to play cept for like... 1 maybe 2.

Must be nice. I had to make a 3 hour round trip to find a slim and that store only had one. I called everywhere and most of the online retailers are still back ordered. Sad part is that after I bought the slim I got a junk ps3 to fix my backwards compatible 60 gig unit. So now I have 2 PS3s.
