Over 600 communities submit apps for Google broadband

Over 600 communities submit apps for Google broadband
Google, which announced last month that it will begin building an ultra fast broadband network to service up to 500,000 customers around the United States, (with speeds advertised at about 100 times the current average speed for broadband connections) has said today that 600 communities applied for the experiment, as well as 190,000 individuals.

"As we narrow down our choices, we'll be conducting site visits, meeting with local officials and consulting with third- party organizations. Based on a rigorous review of the data, we will announce our target community or communities by the end of the year,"
adds James Kelly, a product manager.

One of the most headline-grabbing lobbying efforts done by a community was from Topeka, Kansas where the mayor temporarily changed the name of the entire city to Google, Kansas.

yeah its an application. You usually fill them out in order to apply for something, such as a job. In this case they filled out an application to apply to become one of the communities that google considers for its new broadband service.

Haha, I'm going to go ahead and assume that the only apps that Susan was aware of up until this point were the "apps" available on her iPhone. As well as being short for the type of application that a7x was referring to, in Apple's case (and software in general, Apple did NOT come up with the term) it is also short for a software application.

So, Susan - Do YOU know what an app is? ;)

Ladies & Gentlemen.. Oklahoma City is where it's going..

Not only did we just get an NBA team, pass an 800million dollar city tax to upgrade our downtown and add key buildings to an already growing city.

***But we have the most "Cell-Phone Only" households in America..***
1 in 4 Oklahomans ONLY use a cellphone as their main line of communication.

Coupled with the fact that we are centrally located and have access to alternative energy sources like Wind and are one of America's biggest producers of Natural Gas.

You boys will just have to wait.. =P

    Good Luck to EVERYONE!!!

I wish they'd come to my rural community, but it is just as uneconomical in my area for Google as it is for the local telco that hasn't upgraded my DSLAM in the last 8 years. So, I will continue to "enjoy" my 512k DSL since it's the best I can get.

I'm not sure what Google is trying to accomplish here...maybe they're willing to take the money the gov't is putting out there to upgrade Internet infrastructure. I do think this is a good thing...will get more people employed to set this stuff up.
