Overall the Slate has a strong advantage over the iPad in many areas, like SD and USB slots, TWO cameras, video capture capability, and more. The only thing I find concerning is the 5 hour battery life, and the fact it runs a full operating system, meaning it may not have the "instant on" ability the iPad has - an issue for some, not for others.
I'll have to wait until the Slate comes out before I decide which one to buy. They both have advantages, but the Slate certainly seems to have all the bells and whistles that Apple left off of the iPad.

I can see the commercial now.
Mac guy , and PC guy are in a quiz type situation. They both power on and Mac guy finds his answer and powers off, while PC guy is left sitting there still waiting for his "anti-virus" to finish loading.

i had high hopes for the slate..but the battery life pretty much makes it obsolete as a tablet..
both arent worth customers pissing their direction..
ill just sit face-palm'd and wait for something worth shelling 500$ on..in the end ill just buy an ultraportable laptop..screw touch capabilities!

so there! Look, I'm by no means a Mac or Apple supporter,but I think the point was meant from power up, not from standby. And with the 5Hr. battery life you probably won't have it in standby mode all day without having it tethered to an outlet.
Iv'e always been a PC person, but I am getting an iPad. I think it will be fun and different....^^;

Most of the comments were about specs. Is there any comparative about Applications? We have seen the insurgence of Apps and Apple has thousands to choose from. Does the Windows of HP have the Apps equivalent?

Its basically a netbook/laptop so you can just download and use programs that you would generally use on your pc.

On disliking Macs... I just built this kick-ass gaming PC for a friend's son, it's the envy of all his friends... the little SOB went put an Apple Mac logo on it. It's meant to be some sort of joke... but somehow I don't see the funny side. :/

I gave up on the Chrome browser when I discovered it kept loading up spyware every time I used it (DoubleClick... do a search on it, Google bought it!).
How does the Slate compare to the Asus EeePC touch screen version? I think it has one of those flip around lids too (not sure).
Our EeePC 1000H gives us immense pleasure. It consistently surprises me... it seems to run more powerfully than it's specs indicate. It boots quick enough, is running XP and Linux (a special Ubuntu version that's compiled for these Atom CPU netbooks- it was nice that it just worked straight up, no need for extra drivers etc.).
What's not to like? The keyboard's lovely. MousePad is good. It has 3 usb and a SD slot, VGA out (I think there are versions with HDMI), N-Wireless (I bought an N-Router because of it). Ok, it's a whole inch thick.
Four of my friends bought one after they tried ours. Friends = mother-in-law, a mate, his mother-in-law and another mate. I don't mean to sound like a commercial but it's true.
I think the iPad is slick, an oversized iPhone really... using the same OS. It really doesn't give me the versatility I want. I couldn't even upgrade it with an SSD. I suppose it has it's place but, then again, I haven't tried the EeePC Touch...

Contract, downloads, hours in the office, and two day of travel. That 10hours of battery really was important. I had all my documents, the production's budget, spreadsheets, email, the demo reel, location stills, etc. I'm not sure what more to say but I think it is interesting that people can so easily say how will need it and how they will use it. Hubris I believe is the word for it.
My recommendation is that before defining something, you understand it. I doubt you bought one.

For Ben.. yes.. HP are open source supporters.. you can install anything you want within reason (obviously a 256 bit unix mainframe core system won't work hehehehe).. they only sell them with winmoron on them because that's what retailers are forced by M$ anticompetition methods to sell.

According to that, the Slate does not even have speakers? I doubt it...probably just another apple fanboy making the report.
That would explain why the graphics are "undisclosed" in spite of the fact that there have already been full tear-downs listing every component...the same would be true of the ram (everyone already knows it has only 256MB, why say "undisclosed", other than to hide the fact that the slate has four times more?)
Oh, and then there the the obvious things, such as multitasking, flash, etc...things that apple could do easily if they did not hate their customers so much...no mention of any of that.
