SEC was watching porn while the financial markets collapsed

SEC was watching porn while the financial markets collapsed
Although this story is slightly outside of our niche, it is still particularly interesting. Republicans have come out swinging today, claiming that the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) was too busy watching pornography to properly police the nation's financial system as it collapsed in 2008.

Says California Rep. Darrell Issa, the head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee: "It is disturbing that high-ranking officials within the SEC were spending more time looking at porn than taking action to help stave off the events that put our nation's economy on the brink of collapse."

The SEC internally had talks with 33 employees that were caught looking at "explicit images" over the past five year, all on their government-issued computers. 31 of those problems have come since 2008, when the stock market and the nation's financial system almost came full crashing down thanks to billion dollar losses caused by derivatives.

The SEC Inspector General, in response to a probe by Republicans, added some incredible findings to the already devastating situation.

Reads the Chicago Tribune:

-- A senior attorney at the SEC's Washington headquarters spent up to eight hours a day looking at and downloading pornography. When he ran out of hard drive space, he burned the files to CDs or DVDs, which he kept in boxes around his office. He agreed to resign.

-- An accountant was blocked more than 16,000 times in a month from visiting websites classified as "Sex" or "Pornography." Yet he still managed to amass a collection of "very graphic" material on his hard drive by using Google images to bypass the SEC's internal filter, according to an earlier report from the inspector general. The accountant refused to testify in his defense, and received a 14-day suspension.

-- Seventeen of the employees were "at a senior level," earning salaries of up to $222,418.

-- The number of cases jumped from two in 2007 to 16 in 2008. The cracks in the financial system emerged in mid-2007 and spread into full-blown panic by the fall of 2008.

A report in 2006 showed that around 16 percent of all men with work Internet access admit to watching porn at some point, while at work.

When I first read the headline I thought "Well, yeah, a stressful work environment would probably benefit from a bit of skin"...

And then Quote:A senior attorney at the SEC's Washington headquarters spent up to eight hours a day looking at and downloading pornography. When he ran out of hard drive space, he burned the files to CDs or DVDs, which he kept in boxes around his office. He agreed to resign.
Who on the face of this planet spends eight frigging hours looking at porn?

That attorney probably wasn't releasing the throbbing buildup in the office, which caused the 8 hour a day fiasco. Had he released, he would have lost interest in 10 minutes and had 7 hours and 50 minutes to do some real work.

Seriously though, this info is nothing but a distraction to draw our attention and focus away from what really went on.

LOL! Yep pretty much or someone who doesn't work when he's supposed to work. 8 hours of porn would drive anybody crazy anyway. He honestly needs help or something else, cause that's one hell of a distraction if you ask me. Where's his superior anyway during all this? Watching porn too?

This happen in 2008 and is just news yesterday:
Out of 33., 17 are Senior Level who make more that a 99,000 USD to 223,000 USD. a year.
The "Sad Part" is that they still working there.

Actually all start in 2001 when Bush give a "Free-hands to Wall Street" to do wherever they wanted and on 7 years they destroy the Economy of USA.
So Bush and his people are the only one to blame if you ask me.

So basically, by reporting 2008 findings, they are pretty much stonewalling the release of the condemning information. The FFC and SEC are pretty much buddies, so the FCC goes in and white washed the investigation and gives a slap on the wrist to them in the form of fines and lower level employees getting charged.

With the way these agencies act, I think I would rather have them spending all day watching porn...they never do anything good, so they might as well do nothing at all.

Agreed, our corrupt government doesn't want us to know about all the shady deals that were going on at this time. This is a perfect distraction. People wonder why their taxes are constantly being raised, instead of the government operating more efficiently. I guess government, and operating efficiently are kind of an oxymoron though.
When will we start holding our leaders accountable, and end this nonsense?
Will we wait until we are taxed into poverty, and all of our freedoms stripped away?

And by the time that happens, things will be too late. The country and the world will be in a police state at worst. We'll have not guns b/c they would have taken them all, and we'll all be slaves of the state.

We are slowly losing our freedoms by design (I'm not just talking about the U.S., but countries everywhere). They incrementally restrict our freedoms (which society accepts), b/c a huge change will not be accepted by society. This is like the say about the frog, "Put a frog and pot and slowly increase the heat, and before the frog know it he is done." AKA "Slowly restrict the freedoms of the people, and before they know it they have none."

Speaking of "waking up", I get all my news from www.infowars.com and www.prisonplanet.com . They cover all the important news and stream broadcast (in a loop) the daily 4 hours show of Alex Jones. If you want to wake up your friends and family about the real horrors of what is going on, just show them some of Alex's documentaries, which are freely available online.

Agreed. I'm not a citizen of the US, but I'm a firm believer in the fact that all government workers, whether they are in the US or Timbuktu, are at least halfway bent and only seek to satisfy their own interests. Take the expenses scandal over here in the UK. They say that they are sorry and that may be true, but they're not sorry because of the crime they committed, they're sorry because they got caught.

Actually the number of Corrupted employees do not matter, the big picture is what is important here; the damage is already done here in USA starting since 2001 or maybe even before that time.
The point is to make sure this do not happen again here.

Wow. I can defend looking at the occasional adult material. I do it myself and I am sure most others here do as well. What is not okay though, is the SCALE I am reading about.

Quote: A senior attorney at the SEC's Washington headquarters spent up to eight hours a day looking at and downloading pornography. When he ran out of hard drive space, he burned the files to CDs or DVDs, which he kept in boxes around his office. He agreed to resign. I was quite the porno fiend back in my early teens. I've spent untold hours in the darkest corners of the web.

But my collection has NEVER been large enough to fill a 40GB hard drive(what I was using at the time). Nor has it ever been large enough, or of enough precedence in my life, to have hard copies laying around. Presumably a higher ranking attorney with his own office will have a fairly nice PC, and in the last several years, a fairly nice PC includes WELL OVER 40GB of HDD space.

What really sickens me is that this man did this in his office. He spent enough time looking at porn to amass what is apparently a very LARGE collection. Larger than what I have ever had even at the peak of my highschool years. And I'll tell you what I wasted a LOT of time on the subject.

    So here's my impression:

    - He spent a LARGE span of time doing this
    - He sometimes spent entire work days doing this
    - He filled his hard drive(presumably over 40GB which is a lot of porn)
    - He was keeping hard copies all over a corporate office
    - Last, but not least, he was being PAID HUGE WAGES TO DO IT

In other words, I love my country but I distrust anyone who presumes to tell me what to do.

How is it that a porno addict can get such a cushy job yet many hard-working honest people are struggling to make ends meet? How is he any more qualified for the job then than someone like myself? He was basically getting paid to archive porn all day long. AFAIK up to 8 hours a day means days where he DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BUT LOOK AT PORN. I could do this all day for the wages he was making ;P

Also, with just about any large network there is a way to monitor traffic on almost every machine. Somebody MUST have noticed the network traffic from said office. So I think there was also negligence on the part of the network admins.

And people like these have control over our lives? At this point I'm almost ready to embrace anarchy just to get through all the BS and red tape. Not that I'm anti-American, quite the opposite. But our leaders lie to us every day without being expected to answer for themselves when they are caught in the act. Our leaders also make plans and changes outside of the control of the people, and expect us to follow willingly without question. I am all for government, as it is something human beings need to operate on the scale our world does today. But when individuals enter office with their own personal and political agendas, it is the peoples' right to have this exposed and challenged. Politicians abuse their power and ignore the issues around them.

This doesn't have anything directly to do with said article. But it has EVERYTHING to do with why this was allowed to happen and for so long.

Sell stock in a company in the morning when the price is up and buy it back in the afternoon when the price drops. The transfer may occur in real time because the purchase or sell never went to the stock exchange. You must wait 3 days after a sell for the money to be available for use. Someone collects interest for 3 days on the funds for each stock transaction.

    Well gee,
to me it seems like anouther way to pass the buck on. This report was done it what?? 2008?? We are a quarter way into 2010 now. So if those findings were in 2008 I'm sure the people were dealt with in 2008. true we were already in a downward spiral in 2008, but the way this is being brought up Could this not have stopped the downward spiral of the economy?
    NO
there were multiple things that was bringing the economy down.
The new administration if it is so great why has the decline not stopped. Cities and states are now hurting dramatically not just people. Countries are begging for finicial help. And we are going to put all this blame on 16 employees looking at porn?
Oh no we're going to put it all on the Bush administration.
How about the fact that Banks were lending to people that they shouldn't have and were finding a loop hole that allowed them to file morgage insurance.
Or the fact that Ford, GMC, and Dodge pushed SUV's down our throats instead of Fuel efficiant cars which they had recieved grants from the government to do. (Other car manufactors did and they did not need the bail out)
Or people living above their means and living on their credit cards and not their actual money.
If this was truly Just Bush's fault, or the fault of these 16 employees. Then why was Iceland basically claiming bankrupcy. Or China hitting fincial troubles in there what was supposed to be booming towns like Dubai?
People need to stop passing the blame and take a look at the mirror.
Do you really need that second car and have 2 car payments? Why not save cash and buy it out right?
Do ya really need a 3 bedroom house when it's just you and your spouse on a 30 year morgage?
Why not live of your paycheck and not your credit cards.
I won't post the stats, I'll give you a link and let you read for yourselfs. It's really worth a look.

    http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-n...istics-1276.php

Hopefully after reading you'll realize that the blame needs to quit being passed around.
It doesn't matter who's at fault. What matters is getting it fixed.
Bush is out of the office so everything should be just perfect now, right Bush Bashers?
And No I don't dislike Obama.
I just want to quit seeing the mud slinging and start seeing the resolution.
So much focus has been put on Healthcare, when the economic crisis wasn't even solved. It had a bandaid put on it and forgotten about. And people started accepting that we were just financially screwed.
So in my eyes it's now very evident that the government cares nothing about helping the fincial world out. But mearly wants to say "We fixed Healthcare" Which still won't be in effect until 2012. At the very EARLIEST.
To quote a Micheal Jackson Song, Man in the Mirror

    I'm Gonna Make A Change,
    For Once In My Life
    It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
    Gonna Make A Difference
    Gonna Make It Right . . .
    ..........................
I'm Starting With The Man In
    The Mirror
    I'm Asking Him To Change
    His Ways
    And No Message Could Have
    Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
    A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And
    Then Make A Change

    I agree with you a 100% !

I feel a lot better today that: wherever small thing I buy is with Cash Only or if I buy a big item (High Rate Use Car, New Car, etc) I will do my best to pay for it in around 12 months just to improve my Credit Score.
A +15 years Mortgage is just for the Birds.....if you ask me !

Best to pay cash for a house. You could find a home for $1,000 but those days may be over.

The idea is not to pay cash always. The real point is to build Credit for a Future use....like stop to be an employee for the rest of your life and open your own business, or live a better life and replace the old stuff...etc.

    Thank you Mrguss and john_swan,
No obviously we cant all pay cash for a house. What I was mostly regarding to was that most people are in credit card debit because they "HAD" to have that Huge Flat Screen with the Killer Bose surround sound. They had to have all the upgrades on their homes. The had to get the fanciest car. So they used and abused their credit/credit cards.
Also, and this is just a threoy..............
If we get to where we're dependant on our own money and our own selves we won't have to worry about the government stepping in "fixing" things.
The things that the government has set up can be used for the people that actually need it.
(example)(I was out of work for a time in my life and was really suffering. My wife at the time was not medically cleared to drive or work. I ended up getting a speedy job getting minimium wage just to get some fast money. I was able to put provide food and shelter and nesecities but her child was NOT insured. We went to get him on government insurance but was told "You make to much money". Hell I barely could afford food and rent. I ended up working 2 full time jobs and was still free enough to drop off and pick up her son every day from school. Thanks for nothing there government. But that was a long time ago and made me stronger, but also realized that when push comes to shove the government is gonna shove you away and tell you to get lost)
So yeah, save your dollars. Make them count. Cause when you need a bailout it wont happen unless your gonna repay it by giving donations come election times.
    Just my cheaper 2 cents

When bank pays you 0.1 percent for the use of your money and you pay them 30 percent for the use of their money. Unless banks change the way they do business you would be best not to deal with them at all. You should consider a credit union.

Banks have been known to shutdown website for maintenance at 11pm so your transaction gets processed after midnight. Banks charge you a fee ($15 - $20) to credit your deposit on the same day. Some banks delay processing payments by mail for a couple of days so they can charge you late fees and increase your interest rate. Payments made on Discover, Sears MasterCard and Sears Visa cards at Sears could be delayed by up to a week. Banks block your account and refuse to accept payment at the local branch. You have no way to make your payment because it must now be paid through western union account. A branch manager of bank can help but the process could take up to a week. Your personal check, cash or Cashiers Check from their own bank will not be accepted as payment. You are late because they refused to accept your payment and take your security because you failed to make a payment ontime. CitiBank closes down teller lines to make people that pay their credit card bill at lunch time on the due date will be posted the next business day. The banks change due dates each month to confuse customer. Ask for a credit card increase in line of credit. They will issue you a second or third credit card each with a different due date that changes month to month. More chance that you will be late on a payment.

Why would you want to deal with these criminals?

    @ john_swan:

    Thanks for the Info.
I know they are CRIMINALS WITH LICENSE
    I deal with Credit Union.

But I have 1 or 2 Credit Cards, trying to give them as less possible I can give to them to keep up with my Credit Score. A System that the Banks create in the First Place to have control of our money and us.
But Now the whole Credit Score Game is affecting people even MORE to find a Good Job; 'cos the Employers are checking today from all new hire people's Credit Scores and even them Face Book Page, before they give a Job to us.

And I think is a 100% illegal to do this: What the Credit Score have to do for us to have the right to get a Job ?

But if the Government of USA do not do anything.....this new others CRIMINALS Employer's Companies and Corporations will gonna keep doing this BS with us....'cos I think this employers have investments on Credit Cards too....
...and the whole thing is just a BIG MAFIA !

Between the Government, the Corporations, Wall Street, Banks, Credit Cards, etc, etc. I just feel like dancing with the Sharks if I tell you the real truth.

Thanks God I do not buy Crapple Products or have any Debt. "0"

These government employees appear to be unsupervised. Where was the management team? Where was the congressional oversight? Why were these employees and managers not fired?

The answers simple they were all to busy having a ham shank !!!

Seriously its funny this all comes to light so shortly after old Goldman Sax was caught with their pants around their feet after collapsing the sub prime market.

Saying the primary cause of the global credit crunch is due to some bloke who walks funny and has clammy palms is funny but never the less one of the most rediculious things ive read of late.
