Chrome gains more browser market share

Chrome gains more browser market share
According to the latest figures from NetApplications, Google's Chrome browser continues to take market share at a rapid pace, and should be on pace to surpass the 10 percent milestone by the end of the year.

The browser has been out for 19 months, and has no marketing campaign, yet continues to steal share from leaders Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox.

Additionally, Safari continues to take share as well, albeit at a slower pace.

Chrome jumped to 6.73 percent share, from 6.1 percent last month, while Internet Explorer fell to 59.95 and Firefox remained about flat at 24.59 percent. Safari jumped marginally to 4.72 percent.

IE continues to fall since its peak in 2003, when the browser was used by 93 percent of those connected to the Internet. Google and NetApplications have said they expect Chrome to have anywhere between 8.5-10 percent share by the end of 2010.

i for one have jumped shipped to chrome from firefox. There are some add-ons that i miss on firefox, but the overall interface, looks, speed of chrome just did it for me. =]

Perhaps no mainstream ad campaign, but I've seen commercials for it on Hulu, and there's a plug for it on the vanilla Google homepage as well. That doesn't necessarily make its adoption rate any less interesting, I just wanted to set the record straight(er). :-)

hahaha.. I use kazehakase .. I don't trust google and firefox is becoming a bloated buggy monster gaining security risk plugins and extensions left and right..

I don't believe any of these "market share" crap lines when it comes to FREE software.. how do they tell?.. number of downloads doesn't mean number who are using, or number who even fired it up for more than 30 seconds.. I can set my kazehakase to report to sites it's chrome, or IE.. or firefox.. or safari or even "mind your own f---in business v0.1" if I want.. does that make it chrome or any of the others??.. nope.. it's still kazehakase.

What does this kind of story matter?.. drivel.. junk to appeal to MaccyD's eaters.. the herd who want to "use what everybody else uses because if everybody uses it then it must be best" .. hey zippy.. it's a Sheeple article.. we like sheeple.. they are easy to take apart.. just because "everybody uses something" doesn't make it "the best" .. doesn't even follow that it's good.. just shows that everybody uses it.. like MaccyD's.. just because it's everywhere and everybody eats it does not make it healthy or good food.. in fact the exact opposite.. but people believe the crap they are sold about something and believe the marketing.. sheep eat grass.. they prefer windfall apples when they can get them.. and they love cannabis.. but they tend to eat mostly grass because that is what the farmer provides.. it's what they know and it's familiar.. is it the "best" thing for them to eat?.. dunno.. probably not.. I bet there are sheep-nuts or something which are nutritionally better for them, but farmers are tight.. so the sheep get grass..

get what I'm saying.. market share.. about as much a test of quality as saying.. well anything you can think of really.. google chrome has bigger balls than the bull up the road.. really?.. bet it don't have horns and the capability to run at 30mph.. In a straight stare and charge contest my moneys on the bull.. hahahahaha

Got it yet.. we REALLY don't give a toss about "market share" when it comes to crap like browsers.. honest.. judst so long as people realise IE is spyware and a huge security risk to EVERY internet user, whether they run it or not.. so people stop using that crap and making non standards compliant IE only sites.. that's all we care about.

bet you "prefer" it to the stuff that grows on the lawn.. but if desperate I guess you can smoke that too yeah? (catnip with cloves is better actually).. anyhow.. I spose you get the point I was making about these "market share" pointless articles.. they serve no purpose whatsoever when it comes to things with a retail price of $0.00 .. "market share" only matters when it is one paid proprietary product against another.. like mac osx v windoze7 .. and even then FOSS wipes them both out easily because it doesn't play "market share" .. I buy a new computer or a new mac.. +1 to their imagined "market share" .. I take it home, wipe it and put FOSS operating system on it.. any one I decide on.. but still the others will crow on about their "market share" being +1 where in reality it is not.. it's actually -1 .. a product they sold no longer exists, but as the FOSS people don't care about "market share" my install isn't counted against anything.. even so.. I'm happy because I now OWN the software that runs on the hardware I bought.. It's what I choose to have because I like it and I like how it works.. I don't care about "market share" either.. I care about having something which works (and even when it doesn't I have a chance of making it work) and which is mine to do anything I want with without having to break EULAS or buy new versions or go cap in hand for help to some company who don't care about me and instead only care about their profits.. .. and that's what matters yes??

FOSS .. maybe not pretty.. maybe not easy to use sometimes.. but is written by end users for functionality and purpose.

Proprietary software .. written by companies of "software developers" to sell to end users for ease of use and prettyness regardless of practical functionality..

    spot the difference?

Where does google chrome fit in with this? .. proprietary and business oriented.. they may not be charging money for it, but you can bet they will be making money out of it somewhere.. probably by selling your browsing profiles to people you would rather not have that information... that's why they are so worried about "market share".. what other reason could there possibly be???

Again I will pull up the "market share" part of the article title.. the TRUE situation is.. "more people have downloaded google chrome this month and happen to have visited a certain handful of websites which count such things.. google chrome setup and post install guide probably being the one which counts hits from the chrome browser"

oh yeah baby.... it's like saying "more people using windows7 than using xp.. says M$ who are counting hits from windows7 machines vs xp machines on the windows7 bugs and problems help webpages"

I can say the same thing from another place.. the linux counter website reports 98% hits from linux based systems .. so linux MUST have 98% "market share" .. even though there is no "market" in freeware world.........

hehehe.. I'm gonna stop there while people still have sides left to split...

wow, i always thought zippy was the most pretencious person on this site but you sure give him a run for his money paula.
who are you to decide that "we" dont need these articles about market share growth be it free products or paid ones?,who are you to say what ALL the users of this site care about?and most importantly: who are you to THINK that you can speak for all the users of this site?

you are just an egotist with low self esteem in need of constant validation from strangers.

^^^I actually agree, all these pie charts, graphs and craps are pretty much useless...Chrome up/Firefox down, IE to the toilet...when the end user doesn't pay to use the software, all these statistics are sort of nuisance, since they influence nothing and no one(except those that do behave like zombies, and equal popular with good).

nah.. I watch you and you are firmly in my "complete retard" box.. so there.. It might come as a surprise to you that I don't take ANY drugs at all.. none!!

I'm taking the piss.. but you and your kind just don't get rational logical thinking when it comes to laughing at the pointlessness of garbage non news items.. This is a classic example of a crap news item.. crap.. pointless garbage.. the same type of fluff that sells "celibrity gossip" magazines..

oh yes brain of britain.. it's spelled PRETENTIOUS.. hahahaha.. and no.. I'm using cynical sarcasm.. a well known tool of the intelligent enlightened people when faced with mass media brainwashing garbage. Another one you got wrong dumbass.. it's EGOIST.. an egoist uses egotistical words and actions to attempt to show they are superior to others.. I need no such behaviour.. I KNOW I am superior because I have an education and an IQ which allows me to put together an constructive disassembly of an article by reducing it to it's core pointlessness then exposing it as just that. I'm sure Andre will read what I have written here and have a giggle at the terms I have used, while breathing a small sigh of relief that up until now I have left him out of it. All I can say is it must be a very slow news day when garbage items like this get a hearing. It's a bloody freeware browser for christs sake.. made by big bad google for some unknown purpose (probably malicious, we have yet to see exactly what their plans are with it) What it is not is a product with any importance or relevance whatsoever to anybody except google and their world domination plans.

I'm not directly attacking the articles author. I know he has a job to do, and he's a friend. I know he writes about the things he's told to report on and it probably frustrates him to have to report on pointless garbage like this when there is so much good and interesting technical development going on which sadly is too far above the grasp of the average readers of the news on a site like this to warrant a report. I view the news here rather like a tabloid newspaper. Written down to it's audience and with an appeal directly to the general brainwashed masses who like to be told "stuff" that they can just accept and never have to think about. As for me I get my news, my real news, from the proper places like techwatch and ERACC and just browse the mass media shorts here in the same way as I scan the free paper on the train going to work every morning. It's useful to see how the non-thinkers think and the things they seem to think are important.

Now I don't need your validation because to me you are not a valid person. You are a sheep believing all the crap you read and thinking somehow garbage like this has any relevance or importance at all to anything other than the drooling media driven desires of moronic non-thinkers like yourself.

I speak for the enlightened people, the people who KNOW they are being strung a line based on a falsehood but who don't dare to speak out because they know some backwards brainwashed non-thinker like you will come along and try to bite them.. hahaha.. hasn't worked has it?

So then joeseffluent.. how about YOU don't try to speak for "every member" of the site.. in fact how about you try stopping playing moderator for a moment and behave like any other normal thinking human being by having a giggle at the stupidity of the whole "market share" issue for a product with no actual "market" value other than ego and commercial totalitarianism for the creators.. or is that beyond the capabilities of your intellect and education?

And as for ego??.. bugger me.. I picked a fight to get rid of addict status and recently dropped a senior member account with over 1900 posts.. ego?? I have had 5 accounts at senior member level or above.. ego? .. don't think so. Just relaxing on a sunday evening by poking fun at google and the pretentiousness of claims of "market share" for a "product" which has no "market value" .. now if that isn't funny then I'm sad for the human race.. because commercialism and the cult of mass media and bug business has stolen your sense of humour. Please start to use that lump of grey stuff in your head next time BEFORE you decide to pick a fight with a journalist eh?

I enjoyed that. It's been a while since I had a good poke at anybody.

Andre.. keep doing your job. It's not you I'm getting at, more the owners perception of what news they think is important. Theres too much fluff and not enough depth.. the articles are little more than headlines. I would rather see proper news with maybe an editorial piece once in a while.. staff could take turns to write one every week? And how about a "view from the outside" kind of thing where members could contribute articles from outside the mainstream about entertainment and technology.. that could be interesting too. Honest.. items like this one should be an "also in the news" bit shoved in the smalls.. between the personals and the classifieds where not news belongs.. rather like 3rd division football reports. I use both. I enjoy Chrome a lot though. The developer tools are almost exactly like Firebug. I still use Firefox and all sorts of extensions to develop but I find myself using Chrome more often for general browsing. One thing I cannot stand is the lack of a status bar. It's much easier to browse a non-English website (if you don't speak the language especially) since 90% of the time they name the URLs in English. Other than that it's good. I also like the % for when you're doing a file upload. For sites that implement APC (like any Drupal site), it's like AJAX file uploading and you can finally know if it's actually working or not. So annoying in other browsers when the loading bar just stays at one spot then just shoots across when it's done (or maybe doesn't because it failed and won't tell you till timeout).

Since extensions are basically webpages with Javascript to do what you need, it's kind of limited. You won't see any extensions that store files on your computer as far as I can tell (think Greasemonkey on Firefox; stores JS files in your profile dir). I guess though, that would be part of the reason why it is considered secure if not the most secure over browser.

hahaha at Paula_X i agree with you that this whole pie chart is not really news or anything anyone except the people who wrote the software for care about but why would they really care? like you said its free software who cares who and how many people use it. The thing i don't like is how you come off sounding like everyone on this site is a dumbass or unintelligent and when ever they see an ad or commercial they believe it to be true or anything that is popular they need it. I am not poking at you or trying to start a fight i am just saying what i see and i for one am not a dumbass unintelligent follower of the heard.

Firefox is slow, and YouTube video lags even in SD.
Playing YouTube videos in 720p on Firefox is a joke for me.

Chrome IMO lacks some features but it's just better than Firefox. If Firefox didn't just suddenly go crap, it'd be going up.

You might not care but maybe web devs do.

Mainly because if IE (as you say) is still at 93% then all web devs would only make websites that worked 100% on IE and nothing else, because no other browser is getting used is it?

So your kamahuse browser can say anything it likes but if 99% of all the websites you went to didn't work properly or display correctly then you wouldn't be able to use that web browser thus forced to use IE.

mmm, strange how you say it means nothing... simply because it's freeware yet you complain bitterly about people making IE only websites.

    Interesting.

If chrome gains enough share then banks will have to provide some support for it, wouldn't they instead of blocking it etc, that's what my bank had to do with firefox support.

it's the old, no one is interested in what the single kid is doing, even if he was making a rocket that could goto the moon... who cares it's not the in group who are probably fussing about what hairspray will hold the best.
