Wii sales top 70 million worldwide
According to Nintendo's latest financials, the Wii console has topped 70 million units sold worldwide, seeing 20.53 million sales in the fiscal year ended March 31st, 2010.

The number, 70.93 million, is good for about 49 percent of the home console market, with rivals Xbox 360 and PS3 controlling 27 and 24 percent, respectively.

For the year, sales of the Wii hardware jumped in Japan to 2.38 million from 2.06 million, but sales in the Americas fell drastically from 12.93 million to 9.86 million. In the EU and other nations, sales fell from 10.96 million to 8.30 million.

Overall, software sales decreased, but "million-seller titles" jumped from 54 to 79.

Software sales fell from 204.58 million to 191.81 million, with sales only rising in Japan.

Gee that wouldn't have anything to do with the games that are released in NA and EU are CRAP on Wii. 1 excellent game a year is not going to bring software sales and makes the Wii practically useless to own.

ya theres lots of pretty bad games for the wii...i only buy first party titles after i have nothing on my main machines to play.

I would think the market is fairly saturated with wiis by now i dont know anyone and there sisters and moms who dont have one where i live to bad they only normally use it a few times then it collects dust...all the system needs is decent games with this massive install base i to grow tired of only getting 1-2 worthwhile games a year if your lucky.

so what?.. items sold is all that counts. Even if only 25% are "still used" that's still 35 million.. compare that to ps3 sales figures.. or 360 figures for that matter.. I know plenty of people who use theirs, and lots of ps3 owners who have left theirs gathering dust after finding out BR film choice is restricted and the games aren't there or are the same old crap targeted at the same old audience that the 360 aims at.. and that has been left unused in a few places because the noise is very intrusive. Your argument doesn't hold water.. who cares if people buy something then after a while stop using it.. bet you have plenty of stuff in the attic and the shed and even the kitchen which you don't use any more, I know I do..

I said before release "priced to go, and cheap enough that parents won't mind if it only gets used for a year or so, looks like it will fly off the shelves" .. and I guess I was right... Didn't make me go out and buy one.. haven't bought any "this gen" consoles.. still have 700 unplayed xbox games and something like 600 ps1 games to get through.. not a big "serious" gamer see.. better things to do with my life, like trying to make a living.

Just because it doesn't appeal to "serious gamers" .. don't you think tendo saw that clique attitude and did what they do best.. a machine for the masses and families and kids.. remember who really put consoles in living rooms in the first place.. yyup.. tendo.. without them creating the "market" the ps1 probably wouldn't have been anything like as successful. People traded up from a snes to a ps1.. sega owners tended to wait and buy an xbox or ps2 especially the few who bought the saturn.
The best games on the ps1 were the multiplayer games.. chefs love shack.. madness.. and the c+c system link modes.. tendo obviously watched a core demographic growing of families who wanted something they could enjoy together instead of the lonely teenage boy with no mates or girlfriend whacking away in his bedroom.

so well done tendo for keeping it real and seeing a mass market.. it's about fun and games, not wanking in bedrooms over graphics and processor speeds. (btw.. I STILL hate Mario.. lets have a duckhunt game with the little overall wearing prat as the target.. THEN I might buy a wii)

When cloud computer and faster internet improves, there will be no need for consoles anymore b/c all the processing will be done in the cloud (offsite) and the player will only see the video output through the internet while giving control input through a computer.

IMO, the Wii is successful because it has no other competitors.
Think about it, if either the PS3 or the 360 was available, the Wii and the 360/PS3 would have equal sales.

If the Wii had a competitor, it wouldn't be as successful... My opinion.

Well, it'll be a while before we see that maybe in 5-10 years, who knows, but I agree that will happen, but I disagree that we should have it. Consoles need a place in the home, and the PC does too. They need to be 2 seperate items not combined into one, IMO.

Who claims about wanting it to be about graphics and hardcore gamers. There are tons of kids games that are fun; what I talking about is taking gamers back to the days of Nintendo Seal of Quality. I had an NES/SNES when I was a kid, starting at age 4 and up; and the games had quality, were polished and finished. Yea there were lots of shit games, but there were hundreds of fun games from good to rent to must have. Now you look at gaming and yes its more expensive to create, but the way I say it, all people, *not just gamers* would rather wait an extra 6 months for a polished game to finish, rather than release a game in X amount of time and have it buggy as fuck, boring as fuck, and waist of $50 to boot.

Too many companies have been lazy and then fall back on piracy to state that's why their games are shit, cause they lose billions of $ a year that could have been spent into developing, rather than making more games of something amazing like what has happened with Mario Galaxies, Metroid series, Zelda, and lets not get into the other consoles... "Call of Duty : MW2"

Thankfully there are companies that seem to care; Bethesda, Obsidian, Bioware to a point; but guess what, the games that come out for Nintendo if any are just as shit. Step it up a notch and deliver and people will pay more and use their consoles more.

Don't drink that cool aid. Cloud computing is just Service Oriented Architecture in disguise. As long as people are still buying DVDs and blu-rays to play at home on their DVD player/Blu-ray player video games will still be executed on a processor in the home. Movies and other streaming style entertainment will be the first to disappear in the the cloud of vapor before video games go.
