Six sites make RIAA's 'notorious illegal sites' list

Six sites make RIAA's 'notorious illegal sites' list
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has announced, jointly with the Congressional members of the International Anti-Piracy Caucus (IAPC) the first ever Notorious Illegal Sites list, calling out the six most "notorious" sites used for unauthorized downloads of music, movies and other copyrighted works.

Additionally, the groups named Russia, Mexico, China, Canada and Spain as the "Top Priority Countries" for lax anti-piracy efforts.

The sites to make the list are: China’s Baidu, Canada’s IsoHunt, Ukraine’s mp3fiesta, Germany’s RapidShare, Luxembourg’s RMX4U.com and Sweden’s The Pirate Bay.

The groups say these sites and their services provide little other uses than an exchange of unauthorized copyrighted works.

"The release of this report casts a damning spotlight once again on several nations with lax copyright protections and websites that brazenly traffic in copyright theft. I'm particularly struck by the IAPC decision to identify significant global websites that facilitate massive theft; theft that destroys jobs and cuts short the dreams of creators who find it more difficult to attract the capital they need to build their careers. Just last week, five years after the 9-0 Supreme Court landmark decision against Grokster, we saw a federal judge rule against the most significant theft machine in this country – LimeWire. While it took some time for the judicial process to work, we did see that in a nation of laws, those who set up elegant schemes to profit from theft will be stopped. There is basic accountability, although much work needs to be done to achieve a fully accountable Internet space," says Mitch Bainwol, Chairman and CEO, RIAA.

The RIAA actually went as far as to say Baidu was the worst offender on the list.

Yes, it's a search engine. RapidShare makes some since as a lot of pirated stuff is hosted there but RapidShare won their court case according to a recent article posted here on aD.

Unless their "legal info" is lying I don't see why they listed mp3fiesta. It says: "In accordance with the agreement Site Owner pays license fees for all materials downloaded from the Site subject to the International Copyright Law. Authors, Artists and other Copyright holders including major labels are paid their fair dues.".

Does mp3fiesta not pay the RIAA or does the RIAA hate the small amount they get from mp3fiesta in addition to them having DRM-free music?

Also, what the heck do they mean LimeWire was "the most significant theft machine"? Torrents have been around, and easy to find, long before LimeWire became popular.

In addition all LimeWire does is access the Gnutella P2P network. LimeWire itself is like an entrance to a freeway, you can use a different on ramp (client) to access Gnutella but the LimeWire on ramp (client) is the most popular one.

Hey guys, thanks for the tip on RMX4U.com. I never heard of that web site before. I took a look and it's a great site. I'm going to register and check it out more closely. They seem to offer a lot of very useful information. I should probably look at Baidu more closely too. I've always been dismissive of that site because it is based in China, but seeing it included here makes me think that they probably can offer a lot in terms of searching for things that you might have trouble finding elsewhere.

My bad. The Recording Industry Association of America doesn't have much business stopping anything you mentioned. What I find weird is how the RIAA lists 6 websites as ones that aren't even based in the USA.

Piracy is a legitimate concern of those record companies, but the way they've been handling it has been just plain unacceptable.

If I was running a record company, I'd just find torrents of my produced music, download them, log the ip's connected, then locate those ips and charge them all a modest $10, not a $2,000+ settlement.

bla bla bla who cares they take down 2 sites 4 pop back up. Its what they're supposed to be doing. I don't know why everyone has such a panic attack when they say stuff like this. Of course they're gonna try to take down sites like these, its their job. But I wouldn't worry about them going away. So they say they're gonna take down a site, 2 seconds later there's comments on here about the world ending. Jesus people.

They sure missed a lot of other sites but like others I wasn't aware of "RMX4U.com". Too bad they didn't give us their real list it would promote more piracy and give everyone more options, what are they thinking or is that rhetorical?

How ironic that the so-called recording industry with their lame bully, the RIAA, lash out at music sharing as theft when they have plotted, schemed and connived their way to the bank at the expense of musicians, engineers and others. The recording of music is but a shadow of musical reality. It was never meant and never should be a money generating machine. It should only serve the purposes of musicians in publicizing their efforts. Real music is live music and will always be. Music sharing can and will take over from the recording industry and it will help musicians and music makers thrive.

RIAA is reaping what they've sown, by ripping off recording artists over the years, and getting filthy rich, and now they don't control how music is obtained by the customer, therby they don't get the $$$ like they used to.

Since the first geeky teenager held a recorder up to the radio to record a song (and hoped the dog wouldn't bark or mom wouldn't yell up the stairs), people have found a way to collect music that they want. In most cases, if they really liked the artist, they also bought the 45's or albums.. and later the CDs. I do listen to music before buying it but prefer Amazon's method of letting me buy individual tracks for .99 rather than a whole CD when I only want 2 songs from it.

My point is that the whole thing is a losing battle and in the end, they only serve to make the lawyers richer and antagonize the audience they're trying to attract. How many people want to see a judgement of thousands or millions of dollars against a poor single mom in the news? Way to go RIAA...

As for the sites, as long as there is an internet, there will be sites to find the goods. Even without the internet, there's still "sneakernet." People are creative that way...
