PS3 quarterly market share jumps to 31 percent

PS3 quarterly market share jumps to 31 percent
According to new figures from Strategy Analytics, the Sony PlayStation 3 has seen its quarterly global sales market share jump to 31 percent, a large gap up from 18 percent in the same period in 2009.

For the Q1 2010, the Nintendo Wii had 49 percent market share, the PS3 had 31 percent and the Xbox 360 had the remaining 20 percent.

Unit wise, the Wii had 3.5 million sold during the quarter, with the PS3 following at 2.2 million and the Xbox 360 in third at 1.5 million units sold.

Adds David Mercer, principal analyst at Strategy Analytics (via GI): "The PS3 continues to benefit from the price cut last September. This should help the PS3 maintain growth momentum throughout 2010."

The report estimates that for the full year, 17.5 million Wiis will be sold, followed by 14 million PS3s and 10.5 million Xbox 360s. Those numbers work out to about 42 percent share for the Wii, 33 percent for the PS3 and 25 percent for the Xbox 360.

Things will be even better for Sony once Gran Turismo 5 is released.

And there will always be more XBox's out there............ALWAYS. PS3 has some fun games but is too expensive and the shading on the XBox is 2 or 3 times better. Games are more fun and other than the fact that XBox users have to pay a monthly premium for the LIVE service, it's just better................except for God of War 3 which I bought off Ebay just so I can play on my girlfriend's brother's PS3 that I'm borrowing for a couple months.

If these predictions are right, the PS3 should surpass the Xbox 360 in overall market share (by unit) by the end of 2011 at the latest.

And what makes you think the 360 wont keep it's momentum going? Just because the PS3's numbers will rise doesn't mean the 360's will stay the same. I predict the Xbox 360 to remain @ second place. Even though it is definitely the best console this gen..my PS3 rarely gets turned on. I beat all the major games but the 360 constantly pulls me in for more.

The one thing that really helps the 360 is the fact that you'll need to replace it in a year or two. This has to be good for console sales, unless of course people wake up and say enough. I'm not a PS3 fan but at least they tend to have fewer problems than the 360 which hardware wise is the WORST console ever made. I love it that the Wii which everyone scoffed at before it hit the market has been the #1 console ever since.

How many YLOD PS3 stories have we heard, or the ones where their Blu-ray drives wont play a damn thing anymore? Wake up..the PS3 is right behind the 360 with hardware failure and it's much higher than that 0.1% that only dumb people actually believe. At least one company had the balls to just fess up and extend the warranty to 3 years while the other company SONY..wont do a damn thing because the fanboys are ..fanboys. By far the 360 is the best console this gen hands down..I never here anybody talk about the PS3 much..all the celebs are on Xbox LIVE..I played with a few and pretty much PS3 is dead and boring (nobody even has headsets on the PS3). Just sayin..

What about Nintendo who is #1 this gen? Funny how you don't say anything about them when they are RAKING in the cash compared to others as well like Microsoft who ALSO has their 360 built there (amongst other peripherals like Mice, Webcam's & etc). Oh and don't forget to include HP, Dell & Apple (to name a few) who also use Foxconn's services....You should really try posting properly informed comments that are actually helpful or TOPICAL and not so inflammatory.

Just sayin. All you are "Just sayin" is PURELY opinion. Nothing more. Nothing less. Because how can the PS3 be "dead and boring " when it has outsold the 360 for more than the past year, be within ear shot of overtaking the #2 place and the actual article you are posting in SPECIFICALLY shows how far the 360 has dropped while the PS3 has gained...a bit of an oxymoron & odd isn't it? From the article ~

Quote:...the Sony PlayStation 3 has seen its quarterly global sales market share jump to 31 percent, a large gap up from 18 percent in the same period in 2009. A HUGE GAIN for the PS3.

I basically quoted the WHOLE article because it seems you didn't actually read it before you posted. Just ranted about other things that were purely opinion and not based on anything valid. Which is too be expected from what is another new account from a usual suspect.

I'm sorry but did you just say that the PS3 is more expensive yet it is the SAME price as the 360 AND you get FAR mor right out of the box with the PS3 than the 360? Just curious....

The PS3 has consistently outsold the 360 every month in worldwide sales since the price drop to $299 and the release of the Slim. Now that the PS3 and 360 are the same price, it looks like we are seeing which console gamers REALLY want more.
