Apple releases iTunes 9.2 ahead of iPhone 4 launch

Apple Inc. has pushed out an updated version of its popular iTunes multimedia software ahead of the iPhone 4 launch next week. Top of the list of changes is compatibility with iOS 4 and syncing with iPhone 4. It also introduces book syncing and reading with an iPhone or iPod Touch running iBooks 1.1.

iTunes 9.2 also supports organizing and syncing PDF documents as books and supports the new "Folders" feature of iOS 4 that lets users organize their applications into groups. The update version also promises some improvements such as much faster backups while syncing with an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4, and quicker display of album artwork in the iTunes library.

  At least some of the alternatives are DRM free and will work with a car radio.
  
  I wonder if this version of iTunes will muck up windows as bad as the last 10 versions if iTunes.

  while trying to install 9.2 it kept failing with a "the installation of quicktime did not complete succesfully" message.
  
  uninstallation and deletion of everything quicktime + itunes deleting the temp folder and 3 restarts sorted the problem.

  That is usually the best way to deal with apple software...remove it, delete the folders where it was kept, and then clean the registry out. Then you install something better, and write Apple a nasty email complaining that no one ever told you that you needed Quicktime to sync your iPod.

  I have a Snow Leopard Hackintosh installation on my laptop that takes care of all my iPhone and iPod needs. That way I don't all those issues.

  I don't use Crapple products and remain free to transfer my audio/video files drm free to any device.

  I guess that's what I'll do to have a phone that does what I want when I want with out hassle. A phone so popular it will have support for years to come from both apple and the hacking community. With a plentiful list of accessories, add on and connectivity with almost any major audio device. I don't know about you but I like when things just work.
  
  Just how often do you sync your contacts? You sound like you don't trust your phone. Maybe your like me and your afraid you'll drop it in the toilet some day. I almost have a couple of times. But other than that I trust my iPhone completely.
  
  And just for the record, I never said I "had" to boot into another OS. Both OSX and Windows have good features and I use OSX for more than just the iPhone and iPod.
  
  People bitching about Drm? Learn how to shut it off or here is an idea....... Don't buy anything from iTunes. Nobody is forcing you.

  I sync my contacts 1,440 times per day (every 60 seconds); my phone does it automatically, and my PC does the same. You claim that the iPhone will have support for years to come, yet Apple has already cut off support for some iPhones, and Apple has not released a version of iTunes that works well since the iPhone came out. Even when support is kept, users are forced to pay for updates and security fixes; so one might argue that Apple has never supported their product, and has officially removed support from some of their already unsupported iPhones.
  
  I would not run iTunes on a windows system...that is why I would have to reboot into OSX in order to use it. I honestly don't know what you can do with OSX and not with windows, but I could give you a massive list of things that only work on windows...and things that are on both platforms are usually more advanced and capable on windows...if they are not identical, that is. The only software that stays on OSX is apple software...and that is because Adobe makes better versions of all those apps, and even novices find that apple's software is too basic for them.
  
  I completely agree with avoiding iTunes...the prices are at least two times too high, plus you have DRM...you have to be braindead to buy from iTunes. With this in mind, any little reason to use iTunes is gone; unless you own an iPad/iPod/iPhone...then Apple forces you to use iTunes.
  
  Note: I do hate Apple; I also hate Microsoft, Volvo, HP, Norton, McAfee, and a whole range of other companies that exploit ignorance and fear to sell their products. I am not an Android fanboy so much as someone who hates all the alternatives; Android still isn't done; not even close...but it is a whole lot better than the alternatives. I do use windows 7...but only because I have no choice; OSX and Linux can't do what I NEED to do. I would love to move to linux, but the people who know enough to write a distro are so full of themselves that they simply say "I don't need that, so you don't need that" rather than trying to make the features work.

  I have a 1st gen iPod touch and the wife has a 5th gen iPod classic. I have the iPhone 3g and she has the iPhone 2g. I keep hearing about this paying for updates thing but I haven't paid a dime for updates since I own them. I wonder why? The only one I jailbreak is the 3g.
  
  I'll admit I'm using OSX a whole lot less since the release of Adobe's CS5 line. I always had trouble with Adobe. Mainly just being slow but also what took me 12 clicks to do with Adobe only took 4 clicks in Final Cut. The CS5 line has greatly improved a lot of that.
  
  I ask for alternatives to iTunes all the time but nobody can point me to a decent program. Most are missing stuff I need or just more of a pain in the ass than iTunes. My problem is I hate the way they stuff the store down your throat. I'm not buying their garbage so I wish I could shut that off. Quick time is annoying as well but you can uninstall that.
  
  I totally agree with you that exploiting the customers that keep your business alive is wrong but find a business that doesn't in one form or another. If they are not exploiting the customer then they are either treating the employees like shit, in the back pocket of a business that does exploit the customer, expensive as hell or part of a government solution. Corporate greed is 100% everywhere and it's never going away. Trying to stay away from it will have you living in a mud hut on some river with a dirt floor. Watching the fire as a form of entertainment.
