Android 3.0 Gingerbread to only be used in high-end devices?
According to mobile phone journalist Eldar Murtazin, Android 3.0, aka Gingerbread, will be aimed only at the high-end market, leaving out a bunch of current models, and upcoming low-end models, as well.

To be able to use Android 3.0, your phone must have a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and a 3.5-inch display, or larger.

For any device with 4-inch displays or larger, 1280×760 resolution will be available.

Most importantly, Google is creating a whole new 3D interface for 3.0, one that will be like the Gallery App on the Nexus One, just as an entire UI.

Third-party UI shells, like the popular HTC Sense, and the less popular MotoBLUR, will be killed off by 3.0, but will continue on in Android 2.1 and 2.2 Froyo.

Finally, 2.2 will become the standard for low/mid-end phones, while 3.0, and its October launch date will become the standard for high-end phones.

damn i was going to buy samsung beam (or what ever it is finally called), but if rumors are true that say it has only 800mhz cpu i might have to go with galaxy S. I was already wondering if 800mhz was enough (for example to flash videos) and now turns out that you cant even upgrade your phones OS if you have cpu under 1ghz =/.

If this article is accurate, then Gingerbread will be google's Vista. If this is the case, and you still want gingerbread, you should wait until the twin core 1.2GHZ phones are out (and get one with at least 1024MB ram)...sounds like it is going to be a terrible resource hog.

Too bad; last I heard, google was trying to make gingerbread even more efficient than Froyo...and if that is the case, then the lower end devices will get it quickly, even if it is not officially released for any of them.

Yeah that was the plan (wait 1.2ghz twin core) but unfortunately my nokia 9500 broke down so that only phone side works (pda side is broken). Which leaves me with very huge phone that has abilities of small $20 phone. Even the phone sides led lights dont work anymore =/.

I dont really know yet if i really want gingerbread, but i would like to have my options open, and faster cpu is never a bad thing. Still pico projector would be nice in the phone. Hulu + pico projector + summer cabin (or similar) and we have winner combination. Only if it had +1ghz cpu =/.
