Motorola Droid is most popular Android device
According to a new metrics report from mobile advertising giant AdMob, the Motorola Droid is the most popular Android device, followed by the HTC Hero.

It is important to note that the data is based on 12.7 million Android phones as of May 31st. The MyTouch 3G Slide and HTC EVO 4G were released in early June and are therefore not included.

The Droid, which launched last November, has 22 percent market share, with the Hero having 16 percent. Rounding out the top 5 are the HTC Magic, Dream (G1) and Droid Eris, each with between 8-10 percent share. Google's flagship Nexus One has just 2 percent share.

Next month, the metrics report is expected to show the HTC EVO 4G creeping into the top 5, given extremely high sales in its first month.

Currently, Motorola and HTC control 83 percent of the hardware market, and both companies have already promised a plethora of new devices for the rest of the year.

Well, DUH! When you make a platform that's open like Android, instead of a closed piece of shit platform like Apple's, this is the result you are going to get. Let the numbers speak the truth, and that's all you'll need to decide which phone you will want to buy.

The droid is doing well because it does everything that most people need, it is on the most reliable network in the states, and it costs $100, plus there is a BOGO deal on top of that. It does not even matter that it is still stuck on 2.1 for most people...they just want iphone 3gs features, with free apps, a keyboard, a good network, a lower cost, and a more attractive look...and that is a Motorola Droid, even when lagged down by 2.1

Oh, and the community around this phone is huge; the HTC incredible just got root a couple weeks ago because there are not a lot of users with these devices, some older devices still don't have root, but the Moto Droid has multiple different paths to root, tons of custom ROMs and Kernels, boot animations, etc, etc, etc.
