June U.S. video game industry sales continue long term downtrend
Although hardware saw a nice jump for the month, NPD has reported that June U.S. video game industry sales continued the long term downtrend, with overall sales falling 6 percent year-on-year (YoY), to $1.1 billion USD.

Hardware sales saw a nice five percent pop, to $401.7 million, and accessories saw a similar jump to $169.6 million.

Software dragged the entire industry down, falling 15 percent YoY to $531.3 million.

On the hardware side, the DS series led the way, at 510,700 units sold. The Xbox 360 saw a nice boost, moving to 451,700 units sold, beating out the Wii, which sold 422,500 units for the period.

Following behind were the Sony consoles, with the PS3 at 304,800 and the dying PSP handheld at 121,000.

On the software side, Red Dead Redemption continues to be a blockbuster, selling almost a million more units in June.

I expect XBox 360 sales to continue to rise as stores attempt to dump their stock of the old style systems now that the slim has come out...

    Just my $0.02,

They're not just selling off the old stocks cheap, there are a stack of great deals for the new slim.
UK retailer has the slim & 6 new games for £209.
    Proper bargain that.

Nothing too surprising here the number look ok regardless of the fall. It is to be expected as of recent times i have noticed noo major big software titles have been released for a long time. I think the next big release will be Gran Tarismo 5 over a hundred days too go and counting...

The problem is the hardware is easily capable of handling anything thrown at it (or more) but video game makers arn't putting in the effort.

    PS2 with 12 games.
    pc-windows 7,intel core quad Q8400,4 Gb ddr2,WD 500 GB hdd,ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphics,AOC 22inch LCD moniter.

the game industry is stagnate, there's no creativity. its the same old shit different name and/or title. the Havok engine is outdated and overused. DICE made a nice but incomplete engine for BFBC2.

there's just no dynamic or fluid destruction or render there's over 1000 ways to smash a barrel in real life each way leaves a difference in the way the barrel would look. when it rains your in a car why don't the windows fog up, why doesn't the rain impede your vision. the roads are wet and muddy yet the car handles the same way it it did when there was no rain.

there so many thing that we could do but no one major developer wants to waist money on such a thing.
