LG prices 31-inch 3D OLED TV

LG showed off the 31-inch 3D OLED HDTV, as promised last week today during the IFA 2010 event, pricing the model as well.

The 1080p screen is detachable from its stand, and the TV can be rotated in place. The stand is bulky as it contains all the ports standard on an HDTV.



Coming in at 2.9mm thick, the OLED display is the thinnest TV yet.

LG says the TV has an "infinite" contrast ratio and has 3D-support if you have special glasses.

The OLED set will begin shipping in March with a handsome price of £6,000.

  This is just how it was when plasma hit retail. An enormous price tag and people yelling how it's ridiculous and will never catch on.
  
  Now look at the prices of plasma and lcd. Obviously oled isn't geared towards the average consumer right now, but at least we can see what we'll be buying in the next 4~5 years once manufacturing costs drop.

It always take a little time for new tech to trickle in the market. Hopefully will see 50"+ at around $2000 by that time. Who knows, only time will tell though.

I wasn't aware that plasma hit the mainstream...it looks like crap, has terrible refresh rates, and it still costs too much. I knew LCD would take off...and it did, but plasma seems limited to big screens where LCDs would be impractical...it is the modern version of a rear projection screen, while LCD is the modern version of tube screen. The question is simple...if OLED costs more than LCD and cannot be used in a big screen, then where will they find a home?
