Sony says it will meet PS3 sales forecast

Sony says it will meet PS3 sales forecast
Sony has said today that the company is well on its way to meet its forecasted PlayStation 3 fiscal year sales target of 15 million units.

The current fiscal year ends in March 2011.

"As of the end of August, sales look a bit better than we expected,"
noted Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment (via Reuters).

Hirai, although bullish on the forecast, did remain somewhat muted, adding that the year-end holiday shopping season would be the real marker of how many units gets sold for the year.

Overall, the gaming industry has seen strong losses this year compared to 2009, with August alone seeing a 10 percent decline.

Sony plans to release its upcoming Move motion control system later this month.

The real reason to expect more sales...the system is now hacked. People are buying their first PS3 before all the store units have 3.42 installed, and people who already have PS3s are buying a second console so that they can keep playing on the PSN.

i agree with killerbug piracy always helps drive hardware sales because people see the price of the console + hacking device as a sound investment ,it doesnt take long to get your moneys worth when you can just download games

Yeah...it might be hard to justify spending $1500 on a nice gaming PC to get $40 games for free...but it is not too hard to justify spending $325 on console and key to get $60 games for free. Plus, gamefly does not rent PC games.

I don't think the jailbreak software will mean much for sales of the PS3.

Once all the games auto update your PS3 before they work it will end any chance of jailbreak working, so even if you did copy the game to the HD it'd still update the PS3.

See once you jailbreak your pretty much left with homebrew stuff and old games which don't need an update.

The proxy software doesn't work with PSN anymore either going by forum posts.

The new PS3 320gig bundle looks pretty good though and has me thinking about buying another one, so that's give me access to 2 fatties and 1 slim.

my fatty hasn't been upgraded, so still has the otherOS etc on it still.

I agree with xtago that jailbreaking won't really effect sale but for different reasons. Outside the little glass fish bowl all us AD tech heads live in the general public is, with the execption of the iPhone, very unaware of things like firmware modding, etc. Out of all my PS3 owning freinds I am the only one who is even vaguely aware of the concept of jailbreaking a PS3, let alone how to do it, and I know of no-one whom it would influence their buying descion.

I would like to jailbreak a PS3, but I want to wait to see if they can make it more accessible to newer firmwares. I can say I not disappointed in my slim PS3, but am my fat for not just losing the OtherOS feature, it ended up dieing anyways, so if anything I'd be mad at Sony's shitty ass engineering team for making a low quality system.

But I do like how they don't force people to pay for online access, at least that they got right. They may not do as much as 360 for content but most of the content is overblown pieces of shit for 360 anyways. I guess as long as I can continue to get online to play MW2 and Borderlands I can smile. That's not for everyone tho and I Still feel there's a shit ton more Sony could be doing right to improve sales on their side with improving customer response.

PS2 compatibility would be nice, but not if its going to fuck up my system; I already went through 2, don't want to kill a 3rd. *I not saying it will, I just saying it'd suck*. All the shit on PSN+, garbage, either make it worth while to invest in, or just go back to giving it to the public who doesn't want to pay for +. It's not making the servers better, the content that was promised is a joke and any content consumers really want would be distributed by 3rd party anyways.

Those that spend money on a gaming PC probably don't do it just so they can pirate games and play them.

Also, games for the PC aren't even the most expensive part unless you're really, really into gaming. $1500 is 25 games at $60 a pop.

On the console side, I agree with you though. It's $300 for a 160GB Slim and $100 for a 1.5TB HDD that will fit at least 38 games. At $60/game, on launch day, a pirate only needs to copy, or download, a total of 7 games to recuperate the PS3 and HDD costs.

There is a tool out that claims to be able to change the firmware version that the game checks for...new games requiring 3.42 and higher might work just fine once you change them to 3.41...giving the jailbreak a decent extension of life while the scene tries to come up with a CFW or at least a hacked FW 3.42/3.50/etc.
