Netflix to unveil new service in Canada
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is in Canada this week, as part of the company's launch of a new online video subscription service.

The new service will give Canadians a chance to stream thousands of movies and TV shows for a set monthly fee.

Expanding to Canada marks Netflix's first move to a foreign nation. Apple and Boxee are also preparing Canadian launches in the near future.

Netflix in Canada will only include streaming, with no physical media rentals plans in the works.

Hastings does say there could be some issues: "In Canada, the challenges are licensing the right content... and then taking advantage of the right marketing channels at the right cost."

As a Canadian I hope this works out. We have nothing like Netflix, Hulu or any of the other streaming services here. The Canadian TV networks offer some online streaming, but the resolution is low and the quality poor. Licensing by Netflix may be a deal killer because the TV licenses are already tied to the networks.

Physical disc rentals would be a nice add in the future. We have Zip.ca, but I've head that it leaves a bit to be desired.

If the offering is affordable and there is plenty of content then I will be signing up for sure.

    I'll second that.

I have never even visited Canada, but I still think this is a great idea...other than the extremely late implementation.

netflix.ca is already live - about 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the announcement. Unlimited streaming for $7.99/mth. There is a one month free trial. The content selection looks a bit "sparse". I may hold off on my decision to sign up.
