Sony reports strong Move sales in U.S., South America

Sony has reported today that they have shipped 1 million Move motion controllers in the Americas for the PlayStation 3 in just 30 days since launch. Sony Europe reported 1.5 million sales for the EU during the same time.

President Jack Tretton said the Move system is already out of stock in most retail stores and the company expects that strong Move sales will lead to an increase in console and software sales during the holiday season.



"Sales are brisk," concluded Tretton, via the WSJ.

The Move, when teamed with the PlayStation Eye camera, gives gamers a chance to interact directly with their games using hand motions and other physical movements.

Sony sells the controller by itself for $49 or bundled with a game and the Eye for $99.

Microsoft will begin selling their rival Kinect system on November 4th.

  Could have fooled me...all the bestbuy stores around here seem to be fully stocked with controllers, combo packs, chargers, and games.

I know the article states they shipped a 1,000,000+ units of move in NA, but most articles I read in google claim only 300,000 shipped in NA the rest EU. I not saying AD is flawed in this case, just saying Sony is giving off mixed reports on the sales. Considering 300,000 units + or even 1 mil for all of NA with the amount of PS3 systems sold in total for NA region *whether including Canada or not*, is still relatively low. They are still only trying to give off optimistic praise and hope for shareholders. As for Europe, that was a strong number.
  
  All I know for certain is, based on what I saw visually traveling to multiple cities, I haven't seen move budge at all off the shelf, its always full. If numbers don't go closer to par on systems sold, I don't think it can last past a year. That's just my two cents tho, it could still see potential gaming for those devices, only time will tell.

  This is a good Move by Sony, pardon the pun, and the timing couldn’t be better with X-mas around the corner. I love my Wii but having the better GPU’s with motion controls could get me to look at the PS3 and the Xbox360. They both will be able to compete now with Nitendo.

  So far, the move has sold to a smaller percentage of the user base than was using OtherOS...and sony clearly said that they don't care about such small minorities. All of a sudden, they consider a smaller number to be a sign of strong sales? If otherOS is any indication, Move will be around until someone finds a good use for it...and then Sony will remove it.

  How is selling 1.5 Million PS Moves in the EU and 1 Million in the US (according to Reuters) all while not even being available in JP (as it JUST released there this week) somehow equate to something of concern/bad? That is a pretty good start for something on the market for only 30 days that people have said is an "overpriced" accessory! Just because there are some available in your area does not mean they are not sold out in most other areas as kikzm33z said?
  
  I do agree though that there may be a bit of confusion with the sales of PS Moves because they are tracked differently than consoles. In this case people are mixing 2 different items which is incorrect because Sony uses "Sell Through" (actual SOLD) to consumers for their Console sales numbers (the same as Ninty) and "Sell In" (sold to retailers or shipped) for their accessories (which oddly enough MS uses "Sell In"/Shipped for BOTH).
  
  The problem is compounded because Move is actually sold out in MANY places which makes the Sell In (or shipped) amount actually "sold"! Which is what seems to be confusing some while at the same time bolstering those who are misinformed.
  
  And why are you so stuck on "removal" comments? The removal of BC was to lower the price for those who complained about the PS3 being "too expensive" (only for them to STILL complain why no BC afterwards go figure) and the removal of the OtherOS because they had to take steps to protect their product from hackers etc...(of which you honestly can't blame Sony for since GeoHot is responsible for it!). I too am honestly pissed about the removal of OtherOS but I put the blame on those who are actually responsible for it.

  KillerBug is a broken record and his comment makes no sense as the Move project will have no impact on security therefore his comment is invalid of course.
  
  I can certainly understand being upset that Sony has taken away the option of otherOS but once again you can't blame them to want to keep their console secure from hacking. Maybe we should condem Wii for trying the prevent the SoftMODs out there as well, by forcing updates on thier consoles'?
  
  Bottom line is Sony was stupid to think their console wouldn't get hacked by providing such a feature given what other consoles have bared when doing so.

The 300,000 mark was an early estimate by Sony themselves. So, if it has sold 3 times more than projected, it's a good thing.
