Microsoft only sold 40,000 WP7 devices on launch day in U.S.?
TheStreet.com has said today that Microsoft only managed to sell 40,000 Windows Phone 7 devices on launch day in the U.S., not including the 90,000 given out to Microsoft employees.

While Microsoft would not comment on the report, T-Mobile said they were "receiving strong interest from our customers right out of the gate" for the HTC HD7.

In comparison, Apple says it sells 160,000 iPhones per day, while Google says 200,000 Android devices are activated daily.

One strategist says the Monday launch date did not help matters.

"Mondays aren't great launch days. They poured all that cash into it but they lost track of the fact that Fridays or Saturdays are the best launch days,"
said Michael Cote of Cote Collaborative.

Microsoft is said to have spent $100 million on advertising for WP7.

Every day, I keep thinking to myself...when will Microsoft get its act together and start coming up with things that people actually want?! I swear, imo, it's the worst company ever.

LoL...they are blaming Monday for poor sales? Google sold 5x more phones that same day...and without a new product launch! Yup...that was the problem with vista too...if only they had launched on a weekend, everyone would have loved it!

We really got shafted with WP7 in Canada. I went to Telus yesterday, tried it out, and I really like the OS, but man did MS ever screw up on the hardware. The only "good" WP7 phone IMO is the Samsung Focus, and it just so happens to be going to one of the worst/most expensive carriers of all time; Rogers. Bell and Telus are selling their WP7 phones $499 max no-term. Rogers is selling for $599, WTF??? If only the Omnia 7 had an SD card, AND it came over here then I would still have hope for WP7.

So hopefully the rumored Nexus 2 is true and coming out soon, unless MS releases new handsets (which is not going to happen anytime soon), then I'm done with WP7. Android here I come.

Ballmer already sold his stock. M$ spent more than $500 mil on WP7 and they couldn't even sell more than 40,000 handsets? Got a feeling this is not going to succeed.

Haha, that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. It doesn't matter what day it is, if you build a good enough product, people WILL come on luanch day to buy it. I wanted WP7 to succeed, now I just can't wait till it comes crashing down.

Ya there has to be a reason Ballmer sold all that stock last friday, bet you he knows something we don't? Perhaps he should get hit for insider trading and visit camp cupcake, could get Martha Stewart's old room? It will be interesting to see how M$'s stock goes.

I think Ballmer knows exactly what we know...that microsoft can't make a mobile os, that the zune is loosing ground to smart phones, that the 360 is loosing ground to the PS3, and that windows 7 (pc version) is the only reason that microsoft stock isn't in the toilet right now. I think he sold as much stock as he thought he could get away with when we saw the story...and now he is quietly disposing of the rest. He would be a fool to keep his MS stock right now; microsoft stock will probably come back up after the coming drop...but a drop is coming, and if he wants to have microsoft stock, he should buy it then.

I heard somewhere the original Zune was really the 3rd rehash of another portable media player after it had failed for 2 other companies before Microsoft picked it up. Seems it is amazing it has lasted this long, some friends that have one really like the features. Seems if the Zune didn't have Microsoft's deep pockets behind it the Zune would probably have failed just like it did for the other two companies...

Zunes, in fact, are in some ways superior to the iPod line. For example, the 80GB Zune has better build quality, plays more formats, and has a significantly bigger screen than the equivalent 80GB video iPod.

I've found that build quality is FAR superior on Zunes. Several of my friends ended up lamenting the unfortunately shoddy fit and finish on their iPods; for instance, the click-wheel has an alarming tendency to break/fall right off.

On the negative side, the Zune PC client is just about the only software I despise even more than iTunes.

I can't agree more about the Zune software, i got a free Zune a while back and can't agree more the software simply sucks. I've seen it mess up my customer file lists when it assumed i wanted stuff organized as it wanted it, so now i have 1000 albums with 1 song each... Lovely! Would be nice if Zune allowed you to mount as a USB drive and let you make directories/containers to allow you to organize your music the way you would like... Besides this annoyance, I can't remember the last time i synced my music without it failing multiple times, sure you've seen it too. "Sync 30%" and sits there for 30 minutes, unplugging and starting to sync again, might get to 50%, then unplug/plug... I need to do this numerous time to get a complete sync... But hey, i got my zune for free so can't complain too much :)

Zune is a bit better than Ipod, I have a Itouch 32GB and it frankly sucks unless you only use Itunes for everything..... I hate Itunes..... can't even get a txt file off the damn thing..... if the knock offs where not pledged with non MP4 hardware and fake flash chips they wuld out sell both Ipod and Zune....

People also want MS Office. People want Xbox 360's. Businesses want MS Exchange. Those are MS things people actually want. It's a bit early to write off the W7 phone. I agree MS has made mistakes, but try not to be so narrow minded when commenting in future.
