.xxx addresses delayed, again

.xxx addresses delayed, again
Yesterday we reported that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) had finally voted to move ahead with a contract with ICM Registry that would create domains with a .xxx address, to be used by pornographic sites.

Today, the group has delayed that decision again, to an unspecified date, citing government official opposition.

ICANN made it clear, however, that the delay had nothing to do with an expensive campaign from U.S. religious and conservative groups that claim the move will legitimize porn.

ICM owns the domain for .xxx and had been trying to get the "green light" from ICANN since early 2004.

Once the deal is finalized, ICM expects to sell about 500,000 .xxx addresses in 2011, at $60 a piece.

"An exclusive domain for adult entertainment has the advantage of allowing for greater control over their content and, in addition, for each web page added to the domain we will donate 10 dollars to finance initiatives to protect children," added ICM Registry chief Stuart Lawley.

The AFP says global Internet pornography generates about $252 million in revenue, per day.

I can't understand why they think having an xxx domain would legitimize porn considering it isn't illegal to begin with. Stupid waste of time. Established websites wouldn't give up their .com urls anyhow. If anything they would just have mirror sites on xxx domains just so they don't get squatters.
