Toshiba hit with gender bias lawsuit

Toshiba hit with gender bias lawsuit
Japanese technology giant Toshiba Corp has been hit with a $100 million lawsuit alleging gender bias, brought by a female employee.

Elaine Cyphers, a senior human resources manager at the company, alleges that women are paid lower salaries than men for comparable jobs at the company, and that it favors men in promotions while putting women into lower grade positions.

The complaint states that just 3.4 percent of Toshiba's 6,237 managers are women, despite Toshiba creating a "Gender Equality Office" six years ago. "We believe the class claims are significant, and will be substantiated in the litigation," said David Sanford, a partner at Sanford Wittels & Heisler LLP who represents Cyphers, calling the numbers "atrocious."

Cyphers says she was paid between $90,000 and $91,800 a year between 2008 and 2010, while men in comparable jobs at Toshiba pulled in $120,000 a year. The lawsuit seeks class action status on behalf of all current and former female employees of Toshiba within the United States.

Toshiba does not comment on pending litigation.

It's highly unlikely that someone will sue simply to NOT DO THE WORK to earn a promotion. Pull your head outta your arse. This happens all the time in the corporate world and it's because of people like you (who call themselves "men" and are threatened by the success of women) that this occurs.

That comment alone should get you banned but since you placed so much emphasis on it using the F word..............I hope AD bans you. LORD knows, they've banned me a dozen times for unleashing on putzes like you.

I'm sorry but if she didn't like her job she should have looked for another one before suing the entire corporation.

If she was putting in the exact same amount (and quality) of work as her male co-worker then she deserves the same salary, if she's not then she deserves to be paid less. Same goes for anyone, male or female.

For me, the 3.4% proves nothing. The real case is what is the female:male ratio for applying to (and getting) management positions.

Notice the word "comparable", when someone uses this term usually means I do less in some way then they do but I want the same pay because I have the same title.
100 mil, come on be real. If you are doing the same work load, same hours and all that then yes equal pay but more often than not their load is less but scream equal pay.
You should not be given a promotion just because your a female, if there is someone else who is better then that's the person for the job, if it happens to be a male, then tough titties.
Grow up, work harder and stop crying.

Try telling that to political parties here in UK. There exists legislation that allows for women and ethnic minority only short-lists for local elections (despite the fact that white-men more then any other class apply to become MPs). None of the main parties used this clause until a few years back when Labour (the paragons of virtue they are) decided they needed more women MPs in the cabinet but had a distinct lack of "qualified" women MPs to promote. So they invoked this clause and viola... instant disqualification based on gender.

Now David Cameron has decided to NOT rule the use of the same clause in future promotion of party members and we are living again under the dark cloud of discriminating against better qualified people because of irrelevant factors (race, gender, sexual orientation etc...). Before anyone flames me, bear in mind that one such example of how bad a practice this is, need look no further then the appointment of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, who was appointed over qualified men under the All Women Short-list policy under Labour. And we all know how "well" she did in that role.
