Hacker discovers PS3 3.56 exploit, will not release
On Saturday night, the well-known hacker Mathieu Hervais posted on his Twitter that he had found a way to exploit Sony PlayStation 3 firmware 3.56 although he refuses to release the details, as not to anger Sony.

Says Hervais:

I hesitated a lot before tweeting about it, but a bug allows exploiting metldr, the bootloader and 3.56+. I don't intent to ever unveil it.

So much for "unhackable" ps3s though....

The hacker will not unveil the exploit, but says "this wasn't about getting attention at all, or fame, this was just done so the right people know this bug is there for the finding."

Hervais' decision comes after Sony has taken custom firmware creator Geohot to court, as well as subpoenaed IP addresses of other hackers and even casual visitors of Geohot's site and YouTube account.

Ehhh....if this lazy guy found it, then I am sure the others found it too; they are probably just waiting for 3.60 to get released.

Either he has the hack and is scared... lame. Or he is full of crap and has nothing... really how is hacking your console any different than jailbreaking your iphone or rooting your android, fcc said that was ok. If you baught it you own it and should be allowed to do with it as you please. My last ps2 that pissed me off got 2 slugs from my 44 magnum. A bit extreme but gets the point across. Ya know?

I'm so @#$ sick of people comparing the I-phone "jail break" (stupid term anyway) to cracking the PS3. This is like comparing apples and onions, morons. Jail breaking the phone was legal because it allowed you to use the phone with another provider. The PS3 hack allows people to damage Sony, all the legit users of the PS3, and all the developers of PS3. I don't see "jail breaking" the I-phone causing this kind of damage. The PS3 wasn't in your so-called "jail" it was a closed system for playing games. A court decision on the i-phone is not relevant to this case.

I hope Sony goes after this guy too. accoring to the DCMA (which is a crock of @!#$ IMO, but is the law none-the-less). breaking digital protection is not legal. ("jail breaking" an I-phone is not breaking any kind of digital protection of content, so please stop before you start that bull@#$t again.) What this guy has done is akin to saying "hey everyone, I robbed a bank and didn't get caught. But it's OKAY cause I'm not telling anyone how I did it. I'm a good guy and wouldn't do that. They can't come after me! I just want to brag about how wonderful I am." @#$#@$ moron.

Going only on what he's done so far, Sony has about as much right to "go after him" as they would if I said "Sony sux l0lzor" on 4chan. Sony should feel LUCKY that this guy's not releasing the exploit.

Ya know with the online "features" and most games having half their content online. The only people to get most of the game for free are about as rare as the people buying it are plentiful.

Also with the right mods you can use your PS3 as a mini computer that can play more video and music formats.

Still at the end of the day more people will be bricked than are able to play "free" games.

You're a Newbie, you support Sony's point of view. And you sir most likely are a Sony ringer account here to do some spin.

If not you're just a moron yourself. Jail breaking an iPhone or Rooting an Android device also allows you to put software or games you normally have to pay for in it for free. Allows you to do plenty of things that are against providers TOS. And what makes your comment both suspect (Sony ringer) and ignorant is the FACT that WE OWN OUR PS3'S!
Sony doesn't have a right to say what anyone can and can not do to a product that WE OWN. If they don't like it then on their end they fully have the right to ban the IP's and PSN accounts but they otherwise don't have a right to tell people what they can and can not do with property we own.

Well jail breaking the iphone and PS3 is the same. Jail breaking the iPhone let you use other carrier. Jail breaking the PS3 let you use the other OS feature (which $ony take away, if you look at consumer side they rip us off. They lucky they didn't get sue for that yet). But I'm in no way support pirating thing, but removing a selling feature that you promise is just a no no in my book.

I don't find that rooting an Android phone is quite the same as jailbreaking an iPhone. You can install apk's using file explorer apps such as as Astro or Root Explorer. I've never been asked to provide superuser permission to any of these so I assume you'd be able to do use them non-root. Jailbroken iPhones have an alternative app store where they can get some paid apps for free, i think. There is no such repository for Android apps and the few free apk's you come across don't even need Root to be installed.
    Just sayin'.

You own the console, yes. But that doesn't mean you can do anything you want with it. Hey I have an idea! Why don't you stand in front of my car for a few seconds? I own the car, so anything I do with it MUST be legal.... Yeah, stand right there, don't move.....

I hope you get the point that owning something does not give you all rights and no responsibility.

And no, I'm not a Sony shill. Just an angry PS3 owner. Tell me, why do so many people hate Sony so much, yet want to use the PS3 so badly?

As far as the other OS as an excuse to do so much damage to Sony? Well I suppose burning your neighbors house down to make his dog shut up would work. But still doesn't make it right.

They Hate Sony (I do) because they are money hungry grubs who will sell you down the river for 2 nickels!
They will do ANYTHING to protect their little money scheme and that includes damaging the future of technology. As long as they get their due.
They don't care that it's fair use or that it's no different than jailbreaking an iPhone or that you own it so should be able to do with it what you will (as long as you don't log into their network and cause damage which will ALWAYS be wrong)
Basically, they just don't give a rats ass about me, you or anyone or the future of technology.
So, people who DO give a rats ass... Like hackers or enlightened users speak up and bitch and moan and complain so that the debate doesn't just get swept under the rug.
Because like it or not this crap matters. Not just for the damn PS3 but for the entire technology world. Your future, my future, my kids future...

Unfortunately for them, all Blu-ray protections have been broken and BD rips can be found around the Internet, usually before the retail even hits shelves.

Both of the cases in which you stated are in no way the same as modifying a piece of electronics that you yourself own. We're not condoning the use of the PS3 for any illegal activity (running someone over or burning down their house). All we're saying is if we want to "hack", "mod", "root" or whatever our PS3's in order to allow us to install and run any piece of software that we can make, purchase, or use for free (legally), then that is our right to do so. Since I bought the damn PS3 I can do with it whatever the hell I want, as long as that doesn't infringe on anyone else's rights.

Yeee haaaa. I'm an idiot! I always wondered what I was. Thanks for the heads up.

There is no winning with this crowd of whiners.
If someone isn't on your side they are an idiot (and according to me if you aren't on my side you are a moron.)

By the way it is a valid analogy. Breaking the law is breaking the law. Ownership of an item, be it electronic or mechanical, does not give you a free pass to break the law. I guess I'm an idiot who believes in the rule of law.

Hey I love hacking, but I don't do monetary damage to others lives. Sony is not a faceless company. Thousands work there. Many more thousands make a living and feed their children and families in related jobs (retail, developers, etc.) But What the F. Your rights are sooooo much more important.

I'm an idiot. Yeah. Right. At least I give a s#@$ about other people. You "sir" do not appear to do so.

Releasing hacks DO infringe on others rights. I guess it's good that this guy (article) isn't giving it out. He's probably just bragging something that he can't back up anyway.

We'll see who's right in the courts. I think you will be surprised and a bit disappointed. or maybe you will be right and then all development on PS3 stops dead. Thanks.

@hastypete- I don't own a ps3, I don't buy sony music (yeah no rootkits), I don't buy sony products period. I do hurt their bottom line by not buying their drivel therefore I hurt all those people you seem to care so much about. I have never seen nor heard of anyone running over someone in their ps3 or using it in the other analogy you described. If your that much of an angry "legitimate" ps3 owner I have a suggestion for you. Go see the doc for some meds and counseling. Way too much anger over a game console in a forum!!!!!

If you own the car, and you own me (I guess I am a slave for this argument), then yes, you have the right to run me down.

I want to use my PS3 so badly because I paid for it and a whole bunch of games. If sony is willing to reimburse me for the cost of the system, games, and controllers, then I would be veeery happy to spend that money on moving to PC, and I would never buy anything from sony again.

As for your arson example, that is so backwards that it isn't even arguable...I will rewrite it in a sane way so that I can shoot it down correctly...

    re-wright of your example:
If you buy a TV from your neighbor, and he then steals it back, and the police refuse to help you, then it would be illegal to break into the house and steal the TV back, leaving the door open to people who might steal other house contents in the process.

    reply:
Yes, it would be illegal to break in and steal the TV back...but it would also be illegal for your neighbor to steal the TV from you...and if the police refused to act in spite of you having proof that it belongs to you, then the issue would be far, far more severe because now you know that the police that you are paying for with taxes refuse to enforce the law. In such a case, it would be illegal to steal the TV, but it would not matter because the police in this example don't enforce laws against TV theft or breaking and entering...and it wouldn't be morally wrong either.

This is essentially what the OtherOS case is...Sony sold something to me, then they stole it from me, and the police refuse to act on the matter. Now I steal it back, and I happen to leave the door open when I leave...many other people go there and steal back the property that sony stole from them...a handful of people steal things that actually belong to sony, and a few more people steal things that belong to other companies, but which were stored in the sony theft warehouse (most games are not made by sony). I don't condone these thefts...but they are an unavoidable side effect of the police refusing to go after sony for theft...and I shed no tears for a thief that gets robbed. I only feel sorry for the 3rd party developers...and their stuff gets pirated on every other platform anyway, so PS3 jailbreaking has no affect on them at all. As for the tiny number of 3rd party games that are PS3 exclusives, I say they deserve to be pirated just for supporting Sony in such a monopolistic way (I also think that 360 exclusives deserve insane amounts of piracy).

Analogies are not meant to be taken literally, but merely as an example to make something easier to understand. But you can't make someone understand something that they are unwilling to see.
Vocabulary for the day "hyperbole"... look it up. Sometimes you can use an absurd example to make a point. Again, not literal, ok?

Forums are fun. Sorry to offend anyone. Every argument has two sides. It always seems that only one side seems correct and it always seems to be the one you are on. This is the human condition. More often than not, neither is correct. It does seem to be a pointless activity to try to change another's POV. But of course I will have to say more, 'cause it is entertaining none-the-less.

Killerbug: Two wrongs do not make a right. Trite, but true.
Breaking the law to recover your TV is vigilante-ism, which is a form of anarchy. (Some do like anarchy though, I guess)

    However, to further your example....
If I left my door open for my neighbor to come in whenever he wanted, I know I'd lock my door and remove his privilege if I knew he was trying to come in and steal my TV. Wouldn't you? So why is Sony evil for doing that? Sony closed the Other OS door because people were walking through it to steal. Why not blame those criminals instead of taking it out on Sony? Why not just get a PC to do what Other OS could do, but even better with a PC?

I'm sorry that so many spent so much money just for the other OS function (how many?), but that's the nature of technology. It moves on regardless of how much you paid for it. I understand the feelings of loss, but to destroy a game system and network that a company spent billions(?) creating is not the answer. This does not give other companies warm fuzzy feelings when thinking of getting into this business. We may never see another game system like this again (or improved) because who wants to spend so much just to have it taken away and ruined by cheaters. Sometimes being a good citizen means that things won't go your way. That's life.

To all hackers and makers: "With great power comes great responsibility" (Spiderman, 1962).
And for Geohot... "If only he'd used his hacking skills for good instead of evil...." (Maxwell Smart, 1965)

I hope that this is a legitimate addition to the conversation with no insults. I apologize for my hastiness (Hey did anyone get that? Did they see my handle?). I love hacking, it is a joy to me. I'm not completely against the idea after all.

BTW, I did see a doc for some meds and counselling. Thanks for the needed intervention Blackjax :-) (this is a light jest, seriously)

It's been fun, but I gotta get on with my next project.

After reading your post, you are seeking attention just like the person who supposedly crack the most recent OS for the PS3. Even if were to say you are not looking for attention, you would have been the mature one and drop the discussion, because this forum posting is not about you, otherwise your name would have been in the title.

Last thing I noticed, you might not work for Sony as someone posted in this thread probably in a joking matter or out of frustration with you, but I have read on some sites that companies will have people jump onto the social media sites to persuade people views just like you have been doing. It just seems very odd that you strongly support a company and developers who you have no real attachment from other, than going to a store and purchasing their product. Maybe you should talk about how people are screwing the stores like GameStop, Bestbuy, Wal-mart, etc. from receiving profits for Sony products. If you felt so strong about this, you would have extended your views more further down the chain, instead of just focusing on Sony.

Not sure what you are trying to gain from the comments you have been making, but then again I'm not a follower and you are entitled to your opinion. I have a feeling some of us are just tired of you ranting so much.

Since you want to use a car analogy. If car companies were run like Sony you could not modify the engine of your car to use other parts. One day they could decide that they do not like the feature of an FM tuner in their radio and disable so you can only listen to AM. Now if you reenabled FM stations on your car and showed others how to do it Ford would take you to court.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about who Sony are suing next. Lets face it Sony are to blame for the demise of the MiniDisk; still no great loss - it wasnt that good anyway but I wanted to upload the few personnal recordings I made on mine digitally to my PC. I had another issue with a Sony Camcorder where the analogue I/Ps were disabled. Sony would only tell me that in both cases it wasnt possible to do - they held back the information on where and how it can be done - they are unhelpful and arragant. But these are not the only gripes I have with Sony.

This all just free publicity for them. I must say though HastyPetes right in one respect at least; why are all you PS3 owners moaning about what you are and are not allowed to do with the product you bought and paid for? Stop buying new games for it. When you can, get rid of them for whatever little money you can get or give them to a charity shop. Buy a Nintendo or an XBox or whatever.

I just want to brag about how wonderful I am." @#$#@$ moron.
if the i-phone can ony be used on select providers and everyone wants it doesn`t that hurt those providers because now they can use it with anyone.and those companies probably paid apple so they were exclusive. but applenew their phone was hackable and they sold even more phones screwing those companies also

i want a sony ps3.I dont agree with all the bs sony are pulling but i know most the games on ps3 have very smooth gameplay and top graphics.I'm not into the hacking scene. My ps2 isnt even modded.I'm probably gonna cop a lot of attitude on here for wanting it but hey i only want 1 for gaming and steaming movies off my computer to my tv.

we shouldn't be stealing off sony but that shouldnt be stealing off us.2 wrongs make a right to prove it heres a maths example (5--1=6).notice how the 2 negatives (-) make a positive(+).

married to my car and computer.both of them have problems.
