Facebook causing a significant amount of divorces?

American divorce lawyers and academics have stated this week that Facebook is now cited in 65 percent of all divorces in the United States, despite divorce levels remaining relatively stable in the fast few years.

Says Dr. Steven Kimmons, a clinical psychologist and marriage counsellor at Loyola University Medical Centre near Chicago (via Guardian):

We're coming across it more and more. One spouse connects online with someone they knew from school. The person is emotionally available and they start communicating through Facebook.

A survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) showed a huge jump in divorce cases citing social networking sites, with Facebook at the top at 65 percent, followed by MySpace at 14 percent and Twitter at 5 percent.

The sites weren't only used to show off evidence of infidelity but also used in custody cases, where spouses could point out pictures of drug and alcohol use by their husband/wife.

Facebook has 600 million users worldwide.

I think almost everyone that uses FuglyBook are always "emotionally available" anyways. People on facebook are just so desperate for attention. Why they feel the need to add 300+ people they never talk to, update their status 24/7, and post personal details and 200+ photos of themselves for everyone to see is beyond me. Self loving twats. What the **** has the world come to... I wouldn't be surprised if these people getting divorced were texting/"tweeting" while in court.

Hmmm...so I shouldn't post pictures of myself committing crimes online...I'll keep that in mind! LoL.

If a person is so desperate for someone to talk to that they turn to facebook, the marriage was probably doomed anyway.

I must admit I am a very reluctant FB'er, I too wonder why the hell people discard their own privacy the way they do, but they do choose to some of them at least so I guess that's up to them.
I will say this much for it, I have been contacted by people I have really enjoyed getting back in touch with again, old good friends that I lost touch with (not through anyone's deliberate choice).
It definitely does have its uses even if some of it seems so OTT.

Thank you. I have never updated my facebook status once since I have had facebook. I to use it to stay in touch with relatives, but not all that often. I typically log in a few times a month at best, and havent added a new pic in over a year. So why use Facebook than just email your friends and family, much more secure and private!

Heaven forbid that someone would miss type a word like loose for lose, honest mistake I'd say. I think most of us knew what you were saying Killerbug, or should I say we NEW what you were saying? LOL

However if they are smart there should be no record of them unless you do a background search. Social networks are not good even though you may think they are. Less info on the web is better when it comes to our personal lives.
