PSPGo price back up to $200

PSPGo price back up to $200
Last week, Sony dropped the price of the PSPGo handheld from $200 to $150, following the price drop of the PSP-3000, to $130.

Surprisingly, just three days later, Sony has brought the price back up to $200 with no explanation.

It is unclear whether the price drop was just premature and will return in the future or whether the entire situation was just a mistake.

Sony's PSPGo handheld has been a large flop, with sales remaining low since launch.

Later this year, the company will release the NGP (PSP2) which boasts a massive 5-inch multi-touch OLED screen with 960×544 resolution, a multi-touch panel on the back and will run on a quad-core ARM cortex processor. The device will have dual micro-analog sticks, tilt-sensitive SIXAXIS controls, standard and front-side cameras, GPS, an electric compass, Wi-Fi and 3G support, and access to Android gaming.

Hmmm...the PSP 3000 is better in every way and it costs sony more to make...and they were still charging $20 more for the go...anyone else see an issue here?

I am guessing that they are bumping the price back up to $200 because some people just buy the more expensive version thinking it must be better. However, given the lackluster sales that the go had last time it cost $200, they might as well bump the price up to $400 to take full advantage of anyone dumb enough to spend even $20 more for the go. Heck, they might as well raise the price to $500,000 and put them in gold cases...that way rich people would buy them as a status symbol, and the gold case would mean that the go is better in at least one way.

Killerbug, you've got the right idea, but all they need to do is slap the apple logo on it and up the price to 300 and it will be fine.

I guess I won't be buying a PSP this generation after all. Not with random pricing. I'd rather wait for the NGP but who knows if that's actually going to be any good. I don't and never have liked Sony. The only reason I ever owned any of their consoles is because of game exclusives. If MS made a handheld, I'd probably be very likely to buy it because I am fairly certain it would get all the games I want.

Gaming is moving to mobiles such as iPhone and Android. Japan doesn't give a shit about consoles any-more, and the 3DS is probably the last of its kind being a device that you bring around but it CANNOT make phone calls. NGP will have the same fate. Why bother to compete in the mobile space these days if you're not willing to invest in making it a phone (at least having a phone version aside akin to iPhone and iPod Touch)? I really do not feel like carrying around multiple 'mobile' devices ever again.

If you goto Blockbuster in Canada and want one, they are getting rid of these units for $100 new. Sony you are dumb, nobody wants these units; get with it.

Hell maybe they need the markup and pray the sell because they can't handle the lawyer fees. *joke, I know they can*

I bet the reason price went back up is because it has something to do with psp umd... why buy psp go without umd, does psp go better than psp just without the umd?

My point is it was 20.00 more for psp so people might buy psp series rather than psp go

I live in the US, and I know that this is the reason I never got a PSP...if the Go had come with cell phone capabilities, I would have that instead of my droid (droid can't play Gran Turismo).

While I have now been burned too many times by sony to even consider the NGP, I wouldn't want it anyway without cell and 3G, if not some pre-4G variant.

I actually agreed with the removal of the stupid UMD drive when I first learned of it months before release...who wants to carry around a bunch of UMD disks everywhere? Removing the drive meant a thinner unit too...of course, I thought that the thing would be a phone at that time...and without the phone capabilities, it is too much to carry around even without the UMD disks and drive. I really wish that a company like HTC or Motorola would step up with a bad*** gaming droid, and give it the kind of backing that Sony and Nintendo give to their mobile platforms...someone has to become the xbox of mobile gaming.

It's a common marketing technique to test comsumer response to pricing. Drop the price for a very short time period and see if sales pick up. If yes, then the product is price sensitive. If no, then a manufacturer must look at the product itself. In sony's case, they need to look at their policies. sony couldn't pay me to take their product.
