.XXX domain finally approved fully by ICANN

.XXX domain finally approved fully by ICANN
ICANN, the governing body behind the Internet has finally approved .XXX domains, almost 10 years after the idea was brought to the group.

With a vote of 9-3, and despite objections from the adult industry, the measure passed.

Adult sites can choose to use the new domain, but are not required to do so.

The Free Speech Coalition, the main opponent to the vote because it represents many businesses in the adult industry, says the move will raise costs for porn providers, thanks to the need to register .xxx domains on top of their current addresses.

Additionally, the Coalition says the new domain will make it much easier for filters to block adult sites in bulk.

The group plans to appeal the decision.

Just like all media cartels, the porno cartels use nothing but BS to justify their actions. Saying that it will raise the cost because they have to spend an extra $3 to register another domain is just dumb, and saying that sites ending in .xxx can be easily blocked implies that no one would have any extra fees anyway, as it implies that they will be closing their old domains (not gonna happen).

I'm still amazed that they actually have to approve domain extensions...if I want to have a website ending in something like .sux (for instance, Sony.sux instead of sonysux.com), I should be able to get it.

What I don't get is how Goo.gl, youtu.be and bit.ly are all legit, but .xxx had to be fought over for no reason. And for 10 years... I mean, who stays in the porn industry for 10 years anyways?!

Just another TLD. It will get used but since there's no explicit requirement right now with ICANN (and I would disagree with such a requirement), adult content will still exist in the regular domain space as it always has.

Porn companies are just making sure right now that no one else steals their name. Other than that, I won't be surprised if .xxx dies after a while just like .biz did. Most porn companies and industry groups do not support .xxx as this is akin to being that 'weird place' nearby that no one noble dare get caught visiting.

Generally, I find the separation completely unnecessary and it really isn't going to help with filters very much either as porn can exist in the regular space equally. Porn companies have been using rating systems meta tags for years and have always supported this. Most have no interest in getting past any sort of filter.

.xxx is so blatantly stupid and driven by money.
.tel, .xxx and .mobi are all pointless and idiotic.
