Sony: PSN outages may last 'day or two'

Sony: PSN outages may last 'day or two'
Sony has acknowledged today that a few features of the PSN have been down since last night and that it may be a "day or two" until the service is fully functional again.

The PlayStation Store is inaccessible to U.S. and European gamers, with many getting the error: "The server is currently down for maintenance."

Sony has not given a reason for the downtime.

The PSN has over 70 million registered users, with 40 million or so expected to be active accounts.

If 'Anonymous,' the hacking group which took down the PSN earlier this month with DDoS attacks is to blame, they have not taken credit. The group stopped their attack after seeing it was affecting PS3 gamers more than it was Sony.

Yeah nobody really knows what the problem is but I won't say anonymous cause I don't wanna sound like a dumbass posting crap, but it kinda sucks for people who really use their accounts a lot even thought its free. As for netflix users I'm sure their pretty pissed because netflix should have to rely on the user logging into their psn account. Stupid ass Sony, and yes I know their is a working for the netflix now but a lot of average users won't know that.

This sucks... Hope its fixed soon... I dont understand though, is this an "Anonymous" thing or is this Sonys way of using that excuse??

Sony is probably just making some security updates or fixes. [quoteThe PlayStation Store is inaccessible to U.S. and European gamers, with many getting the error: "The server is currently down for maintenance."
] The Anonymous deal only affected a small amount of PSN users. They only wish they could take credit for it.

So does this mean if I wanted to play during this psn connectivity issue I should just create a japanese account to play online?

Sony may act like they don't care...but they spend a lot of money on running the PSN, and they don't do it because they are generous. It is a valuable marketing tool for the system, it is an advertising platform, it gets people to buy more games, and it is even a store. They know that a modern system cannot survive without online connectivity.

I don't expect them to issue a public apology for their actions or anything, Sony is a bit like a church when it comes to admitting they were wrong...but they will bleed and bleed...and if they bleed long enough, the future of Sony-Fascist DRM (the NGP and the PS4) are in serious danger. Fine by me...I don't care how great either of them are...I don't buy anything from sony for fear that the features I purchased it for will be removed at a later date. The only way I would even consider buying a PS4 would be if they were selling it at a loss...and then I would send it to Graf to let him start attacking it.

It's costing Sony money, the down time... This week happens to be the release of Mortal Kombat, SOCOM 4 and Portal 2. So, it's not helping the sale of the games with PSN is down and all. I understand things break and need to be fixed, but the timing is bad. Why the hell Sony need a day or two to get things fixed?

And here are the pitfalls of DRM and the cloud..because of Sony and PSN having issues, I can't watch Netflix on my PS3 because Netflix can't authenticate my PSN login. Absolute fail.

So maybe the fans who like their free PSN but who can't give a toss for fans who lamented the loss of OtherOS as a feature of the PS3 might give pause to sympathise now?

So it was the hackers. Annonymous never took credit so it might not be them , but it was an "external intrusion" That caused Sony to shut the system down. While I am disappointed about the outage. It seems unreasonable to complain about a free service. Especially when the shout down was in the overall best interest of the Network and its users. The lack of information in the early stages was uncalled for, they really could have done and can do a better job of informing its customers better.

"It seems unreasonable to complain about a free service"

It isn't free; you need to buy a $300 console to get it, you have to give up linux to get it, and some people actually pay for PSN+.

"...Especially when the shout down was in the overall best interest of the Network and its users"

I never thought of it like that, but you are correct. The attacks were on behalf of the average user, with the goal of shutting down the PSN. The PSN got shut down, and thus the attacks were a success. Sony has taken a strong stand against the evil corporation known as Sony by shutting down the PSN.

I can't find any info on AD that it was hackers, are you getting your info from Sony?

I would not put it past Sony to not scruple and say that it was hackers. The PSN was broke around a couple of months ago and it was predicted then that it would go again. It would be very convenient to blame hackers.

Hmmm, PSN is free for the PS3 owners. Using your logic, something is not really free when you have to do something, then nothing in this world is free. Free Ben and Jerry ice cream is not free because you have to get in line for it. Free iced coffee coupon from McDonald is not really free either because you have to present the coupon and get it. AD is not free either because I have to get a PC and pay internet too.

    Peace!

XBL! is free after you buy a 360 for $300 and $50 a year. KillerBug that was the dumbest comment ever made, that's a shame since i usually agree with things you say on here.

As long as you try and connect to the PSN when you want to do netflix it will allow you to watch movies and shows. It works for me and all my friends/family who have been bugging me (as the go to guy for all things consoles) the past few days. Keep at it as it doesn't work the first time, usually takes a few tries...hell even when Netflix shows in the background it's a pain at times to get the overlay to go away.
