Sony to bring back PSN this week, already running in Japan?
Sony announced earlier today that they will slowly be bringing back the PlayStation Network and Qriocity over the next week, and some unconfirmed reports already have the service up-and-running in Japan.

The company will also be ramping up security on the network in response to the largest security breach in the company's history, with personal info (and possibly but not likely credit card info) stolen from 77 million accounts.

Finally, Sony says they will be setting up a new customer appreciation program to thank everyone for waiting almost two weeks for PSN to come back up.

Sony says:

Third-party experts have conducted extensive tests to verify the security strength of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. With these measures in place, SCE and SNEI plan to start a phased rollout by region of the services shortly.

The new security features include:

-Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks

-Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption

-Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns

-Implementation of additional firewalls

Sony also says it is still working with the FBI to look into the attack and prosecute those responsible.

For the "Welcome Back" program, Sony will be offering some "entertainment content" for free and a free 30-day subscription to the premium PlayStation Plus.

that is pretty sad that it's only 30 days of free premium. If anything they should give it for at least a year..

People aren't happy with something and always want more lmao. It's sad how people act when something like this happens and blames the company. Sure..they should of been more secure to begin with. But they weren't so get over it. Stuff happens. Hopefully the person(s) that did this will get caught and the hammer brought down on them. So the ones who are mad cuz its been down for a couple weeks..GET OVER IT! Learn to have a little patience and quit being so greedy.

I don't see the need for sony to be giving free stuff. Unless you paid for PSN+ or have proof that your CC was stolen, I don't see the need. 2 Weeks of no gaming, seriously? some of you cant survive 2 weeks? SOme of you are spoiled, greedy brats. If you want PSN+, get a job, and pay for it.

You selfish bastards, at least Sony is giving us something free for what happened, they got hacked retards, it's not like Sony said,"let's shut down the system and update the security", they kinda had to you idiots, at least the are taking care of the problem, I've been following different news sites and everyone is like, "I'm switchin to Xbox if Sony doesn't give us something for free.", You idiots ack like Microsoft ever even cared if their customers were and are getting hacked, most of you beggers probably didn't have anything to lose in the first place, I'm happy about the free 30 day PS plus trial, I think it's more than fair, plus now I can get the KZ3 pack for free so I can hopefully shoot some of you cry babies in the face

Oh yeah, Raiyen22 is my screen name so if any of you little spoiled brats wanna say anything about what I said then see me on KZ3 when the networks back up or if you just wanna talk about game news and/or advice add me to your friends list, I don't discriminate, it's just a game and the service is free be thankful to be with a company that will take such a measure to insure it's consumers safety without any charge plus they're giving us something else for free that in turn let's you get discounts and/or games and media for free how much more free crap can you selfish bastards ask for. Well i agree with some people here i meanit isnt rea lly necessary for sony to be givin out free PSN +, but hey the server has been down for a while and i guess this is some stunt to get the loyal 24/7 gamers back on their side....(as if anyone wants to switch from free online gameplay to Xbox)

Sony should have been prpared for such things though...i mean cmon its not like they havnt noticed the amount of hackers on CODMW2 its was practically a timebomb waitin to happen....as for that who the edited for content hacks SONY i mean damn have the hackers forgotten Banjoe Kazoie and Crash Bandicoot??? without sony they would have to spend hours in a library playin runscape... give sony a break..get a life and or job and stop edited for content with everybodys entertainment..........................

i think that sony should do a search on all the haters who cried xbox and boot them from the network shit happens i aint been billed for something i dont have yet oh thats right im smart enough not to put my moneydigits on a world wide network but we all make mistakes get a job, hobby go outside or maybe go f@@k a girl instead of crying about downtime and i look forward to some free downlds that im not intitled to because i was not a victim of n e thing except sony forced me to spend that time mowing my grass and listening to my wife

all this should not have happened, for a billion dollar company to be outmatched by a sick loser living in his mom's basement is embarrasing. However lets hope the lesson is learned and that Sony will be more careful and observant regarding their network. I personally dont think they owe people anything except an apology for putting identities and credit information in danger like that so the free stuff is cool with me. by the way im desertfox2116 and you can usually find me on MW2 or Black Ops. im starting dead space 2 multi now as soon as PSN comes back look me up ;p

You obviously have no idea how long it takes to rebuild an entire networks infrastructure. It is a ton of work and very time consuming, even on a smaller network. Everybody needs to take a chill pill about it being down. A lot of people are also saying that if they had their security better it may not have happened. That's false first off because nobody is one hundred percent safe from hacking no matter the security. Second off everyone needs to realize that Sony is the victim here. Saying something like, "If they did this it may not have happened", is like telling a rape victim that if they didn't dress so provocatively it may not have happened to them, either. That's an extreme example but it still shows how wrong it is to blame a victim in an ordeal.

Statistics show that women who are covered up properly are a lot less likely to be given a second look let alone raped.
If you dress inappropriately, you will be treated inappropriately.
If Sony's security is inadequate, it will be taken advantage of. Same thing.

I think customers have a right to bitch because when you make a purchase based on certain services offered and then such services vanish because of irresponsibility it is at least irritating for the customer and I think there should be compensation for there downtime. Sony talks and advertises it's benefits in the commercials about free unlimited psn and I'm sure it is one of the main reasons why before this sony edited for content up many customers chose them over, xbox and on live... so now I'm sure many customers are feeling mislead and gypped. and no doubt this hack is gonna effect future would be customers. I mean remember http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2011/04/21/sony_says_50_million_ps3s_shipped I'm sure a main selling point for them was the free online gameplay. All consoles pretty much have the same games and I dont think the ps3 exclusives are responsible for all it's customers. I looked at what psn plus offers and personally I dont think it's enough. I feel like psn plus is weak, which is why I wasn't a psn plus subscriber before. I feel like sony needs to give all it's ps3 customers regardless if they used there cc's or not something that's the equivalent of an apology in the form of a blowjob. At least open the playstation store and give the customers unlimited free add-ons to all games for 30 days. Because wtf, for a lot of people it's way past the return period for there ps3 and I'm sure sony is gonna have to beg or do some kind of promotions for ps3 customers to overlook this disaster when considering buying the ps4. Nobody wants to waste money on a ferrari if it occasionally stops running.

How is sony a victim? They get to implement Orwellian security measures in the interest of creating the security that should have been there to start with, and could have been done with a lot less than what they already had. The people who have to go 10 days without a debit/CC card are all victims, and if there is any identity theft or CC fraud, then those will be victims as well...and it is unlikely that many of them will be able to prove that this breach had anything to do with it.

If sony wanted to secure these things, they could have done so easily, and quite a while ago...but they didn't because they really don't care...it isn't their data.

Personally, I would prefer Phony give me a free month of Netflix instead of Playstation Plus. I use my PS3 mostly as a streaming device, and that's where I was inconvenienced. But, Phony doesn't give two s*its about its customers, they think as long as they can give something away, they'll come back. Phony's the drug dealer, and Playstation Network is the crack. Guess that means PS3 is the pipe. And I have the fat PS3....hhmmm.....

Do you have a subscription through PSN? If so and your not bothered with the fact you've been paying for nothing these past weeks...feel free to give me this money you don't mind losing. Has someone began using your credit card...or have they opened up credit cards in your name and this doesn't bother you? If so please send me one of your credit cards. With that being said you cant seriously be UPSET with people expressing their feelings over the past events.

That is a TERRIBLE example. Most rapes happen due to the way the person is dressed. It's not only clothing but hair style, make-up, and mannerism. Had they not prettified themselves their is a high chance the rape would have never taken place because the predator would have not eye'd them to be a victim in the first place. I understand what your trying to say, and most of it does make sense. I'm much like you, I too believe a hacker is a criminal and a criminal is going to commit a crime one way or another. By having better security the crime would have still taken place, but...might have gained just enough time to catch the criminal before they accessed personal information.

Well its not looking good for s0ny at all, it appears the CC numbers may have really been lifted and decrypted..

A friend of mines daughter who was resisted and had her cc number on psn has had a number of transactions appear on her card since the hack... this is already being investigated by the card issuer.. but i read more and more reports of people saying the cc numbers have been sold already and now by word of mouth !

If i hear any more i will post back, but psn's return on not this news is not good news for s0ny...

Sony can shove their PSN+ and their "free" content...I highly doubt sony is going to give away anything that they have to pay a developer for, so that leaves stuff that is essentially advertising (like the free month of PSN+). I bet they will also be "giving away" free 1-month trials of netflix (the same ones that netflix gives for free anyway).

There is only one thing that I would actually be willing to buy from the PSN, and it isn't released yet. On top of that, I think I would rather give money to terrorists than Sony at this point, and on top of that, I would have to drive to the store and buy a PSN card because there is no way in h**l that I can trust sony with a credit card number...and on top of all that, I still couldn't buy anything on there because the TOS says that Sony can block me from redownloading or even from using content that is already downloaded...so that isn't a purchase or even a lease...it is a rental.

The 30 day free offer is nice but Sony must keep in mind that millions of PSN users will now have to sort through their financial records and determine if their information was compromised and then take the necessary steps to protect themselves !

The 3 major credit reporting bureau's offer 1 free credit report per year so Sony should at least offer to pay for anyone who may have already gotten a report this year !

They could also work with the FTC and other agencies to help with fraud and id theft alerts !

Sony's stubborness is still in effect !

Since then, they have done everything I could have imagined to alienate me, and they have even done a few things I never would have dreamed possible. Back then I wouldn't have even considered a 720 as my next console...and now it is either that or a PC...the PS4 won't even be considered. At the moment, the ONLY thing I like about sony is gran turismo 5...and it isn't worth all the things I hate about sony.

If I had to pick one thing that I really hate, it wouldn't be OtherOS removal, banning accounts for CFWs, the geohot lawsuit, or even the lack of security over my confidential information. It is graf...he is as far from the piracy scene as possible; innocent of any wrongdoing whatsoever. Yet, he has had his house raided multiple times and has essentially been muzzled. I had problems with Sony before this, but this was just too much...when they stopped him from expressing himself, they stepped out of the video game/computer realm, and into the realm of government fascism (in Germany no less). Maybe I have just watched the history channel a little bit too much...but when the Japanese and Germans get together and start sending shock troops into the homes of innocent civilians, I get the feeling that worse things are on the horizon.

Sony has been down for a week and a half. 30 days is two and a half weeks more you cheap douchebag. if you feel you deserve more than jump on the class action lawsuit against Sony. @ everyone, before the thread gets shut down completely due to a flame war... dont take things so personally, to be honest im finding it strange that most of the people jumpin in to defend sonys part are mostly all Unverified new user's...

Keep it clean people and consider this, detached from what caused the hack or the hack its self, sonys days of silence before disclosure was unacceptable and caused massive financial impact..

PSN is back and now its seen as a war of damage limitation, people will soon lose interest and look to other things. But it will take a long long time to change public's perception of them back to where it was before all this....

and for sony, if its really true (and its looking very very much like it is) that the cc numbers have been sold, this is far from the end of it, im pretty sure that across the world they will see swarms of legal cases... its the cost of this that immediately is going to hurt the most financially.

On top of that, I think I would rather give money to terrorists than Sony at this point, and on top of that, I would have to drive to the store and buy a PSN card because there is no way in h**l that I can trust sony with a credit card number...and on top of all that, I still couldn't buy anything on there because the TOS says that Sony can block me from redownloading or even from using content that is already downloaded...so that isn't a purchase or even a lease...it is a rental.
thats just like saying that anyone that has had a crime committed against them was asking for it. a crime was committed. no if's and's or but's about it. sony is a victim because it was sony's data that was stolen. yes it may have been your info but you gave it to sony of your own free will. you can say you had to so you could play online but you had a choice to buy the ps3 and to play online. its that simple. sony and everyone that gave them info is a victim. if a crime was not committed then the info would have not gotten out. a crime is what the law of the land says is a crime and by that i mean the courts. courts have the finale say about the law. if the courts back sony up then they did nothing wrong. if the courts say they did do something wrong then sony should pay but not by haveing a crime committed against them. are we really playing two wrongs make a right? we also dont know what sony put in place to safe gaurd are info. its not like this has only happend to sony. as i have said before a lock only keeps an honest person honest.

sony treated a couple of hackers like dogs and got bitten by bigger hackers.the hackers responsible might not even distribute the data/info they stole.they might not even run up credit card charges on other peoples credit cards.they set out to ruin sonys reputation and they have.

as for locks if someone says there lock cant be picked or undone without a key i will try and might even unlock it without a key.I wont rob them or steal there stuff i will just undo the lock to show them how easy it is and that they need to improve security so someone with more experience doesnt rob them (might of been what the hackers did).

as for the courts they dont always do whats right.the law and the justice system isnt always fair either.

married to my car and computer.both of them have problems.

true the courts may not do whats right or fair all the time. but they usually have the final say.

    Sony is the victim? Ahahaha.

I am incredulous at the number of starry eyed enthusiasts on this thread. If I didn't know any better I would have assumed it was a bunch of tweenies at a Justin Beaver concert.

Hey, if you think that Sony don't owe anyone an apology then tell that to their CEOs who are doing just that at packed press conferences.

A month of PSN+... is that the best reach-around they can offer? Yeah, you like it baby, don't you... want more?

I had problems with Sony before this, but this was just too much...when they stopped him from expressing himself, they stepped out of the video game/computer realm, and into the realm of government fascism (in Germany no less). Maybe I have just watched the history channel a little bit too much...but when the Japanese and Germans get together and start sending shock troops into the homes of innocent civilians, I get the feeling that worse things are on the horizon.
    In a nutshell.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

oh man! now I wish I had a psn account!!!... not!... there has always been a way people in power think they can control people... by giving people a little taste of what they could have and then once they have people with them they give them nothing... there's a saying in spanish ("dar atole con el dedo") atole being from what i understand cornmeal, the idea is that they feed you with one finger something that is pretty much liquid, so you are only getting a taste of what you could be getting... and about the people talking about rape being provoked, real rapes can't be all generalized, but in the case of Sony i think they wore a belt like mini skirt, no blouse and tiny bra... and started yelling in the middle of the night that they were needy while lying on the ground... and i won't go on with that or i might be banned... pretty much what i mean is that they did ask for it and i wish i had the skills those people have, not to hurt the users but to give sony what it deserves... maybe if they had installed Linux servers they would have had more security... but who knows, maybe they also blocked the other OS function on their servers hahaha...

lol this is completely sonys fault we have the right to flame them. 1. they should not pick fights with hackers who do have power, without making sure they cannot be harmed in anyway.
    2. the people they higher will be inadequate in the end, the bad hackers are always a few steps ahead of the good ones.

All things considered, i am kind of bummed about the whole ordeal. However, I can do other things rather than just playing online all day. I HAVE A LIFE!!! That and i can cancel my debit card, this isnt a big deal. All things considered, I think the individuals running the network are being quite considerate with this situation, they could just not give you anything and not shutdown the network to strengthen the security of your personal information. Its not going to be down forever, now change your diapers and put on your big boy pant... ^-^

i don't think they are "upgrading" their security or "giving" stuff for "free" to people just from the kindness of their heart... they know they screwed up at what ever level you want to say they did, still a screw up and now i think they know that money (notice how i did not say customers) could be lost big time... so as good marketers they are, they know that in order to deceive people into staying they must lure them to it... so i think there is no such thing as Phony being nice... only market-smart.
