Former China Mobile exec sentenced to death over bribery conviction

Zhang Chunjiang, former vice chairman of China Mobile, has been sentenced to death today following a bribery conviction.

Chunjiang was accused of accepting over $1.15 million in bribes while working for state-owned telecoms between 1994 and 2009.



Fortunately for the exec, his sentence offers a two-year reprieve before execution meaning Zhang can get his sentenced reduced to life in prison for good behavior over the next 24 months.

Before China Mobile, Zhang worked as a deputy director the Liaoning Provincial Postal administration and as a general manager of China Netcom Group.

The sentence would not be the first time a Chinese exec has been executed over corruption charges, with the the head of the country's Food and Drug Administration being executed just this week, says PCM.

  did he kill someone? I'm confused... going to die just for taking bribes? if it is then, it's like saying that people who steals cars at china should die as well.

  Wow...can you imagine how different our politicians would act if they had death as a consequence for their dishonesty??? Not condoning the way China handles their affairs of state, but there has to be a middle ground ....

  Not lose fingers, toes or death by who knows whatever method.

  Jeff We are not talking about idiots...we are talking about the kind of people who started our current depression and who continue to make things worse every day because most governments won't touch them. I don't know about this guy specifically, but I do know that there have been a ton of suicides linked to specific bankers in the states...and that almost all of those bankers either still have their old jobs, or have gotten better jobs since.
  
  Personally, I think this is the best thing to come out of china in a long time. In china, stealing the retirement accounts of a million people gets you death...in the USA, it gets you a promotion and a super-bonus taken from a government bailout.
  
  Some might say death is too harsh...but remember, the US legal system is made for the rich...the death sentence would never get used except as a bargaining card.

  A bit like it was in the US at one point. Even in WWII, people were overworked with no safety equipment, zero benefits, lousy pay.....

  I wish they'd sententence to dead politicians over her (Spain) who've taken bribes. That should help to reduce at least partly corruption.

  And I was being thought as a radical for entertaining punishments just under the death penalty. I'd be happy with the judicial system flatly nutting up & just doing their jobs & prosecuting.
  
  I got into it with another forum member a bit ago about ethics & his case being that ethics aren't a punishable offense. I still offer that ethical indifference is & we see it everyday. If not, then why are our lawyers & medical practitioners bound & disciplined under organizations defined as "ethics board" or "committee" when their behavior or actions come into question?
  
  As a society we've allowed this behavior to go on & this is what it's gotten us. Like a wildfire cancer, a radical procedure to get it removed may have to be endured to stop its immediate growth & then further insight can be made to find a more palatable cure.
  
  China seems to think they have found one way. Maybe for once the rest of the world should follow them in something instead of the US for a change. God knows our last few business models haven't exactly set the world on fire... wait a minute... that didn't come out right...

  Or...and this is a really radical concept...what if we actually enforced existing laws against the rich, while making new laws to address new crimes that they come up with to avoid prosecution for the old crimes. I could almost accept these bankers getting away with it if there were new laws being put on the books to prevent them from doing the exact same things over and over again...but such laws don't get put on the books...we are too busy arguing about how many trillions in debt is too much, if we should cut services while raising taxes or if we should just raise taxes, and if killing innocent children with bombs qualifies as, "hostilities".
  
  Well, that and the fact that tax dollars went to bail out the banks which were too big to succeed...and they spent that money on bonuses and purchasing other banks that were also too big to succeed...like wells fargo...they got the first bailout, and they used part of it to buy Wachovia, who got another bailout...now Wells Fargo is more than two times to big to succeed...and when they fail again, the government will give them money to make themselves even bigger and less responsive.

They should be executed for stealing cars. I'd want you dead if you took mine. And frankly, it's this stern punishment mentality that ABSOLUTELY defers this debilitating type of nasty, greedy behavior. Kinda like Malaysia. The United States could totally learn from this as most would probably opt for a public execution of all those in power and corrupt. I know I'd throw the first f'ing stone.

As a peaceful father, husband, and Tea Party supporter I absolutely would deserve getting my balls removed violently and/or executed **sarcasm**. I don't know where people verify this Tea Party racism/hate crap but it's a fabrication by groups of people that are truly hateful and would love to incite violence on those that don't agree with them. All the Tea Party supporters I know sacrifice time, money, and health to help those in need regardless of color of their skin, ethnicity, or religion (all we ask is come here under legal means and contribute to society). Sure, there might be a handful of fringe wackos in the Tea party but there are no more than on the left side of the political spectrum. Be careful when you incite hate towards those that you don't agree with because that very blanketed hate is what leads to gas chambers and killing fields for many innocent men, women, and children. It can happen again and unfortunately the chances are good that it will.

It would be great to enforce the laws we already had if the childish games of "but you didn't tell me I could do [pluh]" wasn't always the standard excuse for getting away with the crime. "We" all know what is right/wrong, acting out on what's wrong despite is BS & playing the "relieve the guilt from the sin" game doesn't actual make up for the sin. You F'ed up, pay the fiddler; stop the snake oil dance to get out of it. Now that we have to come up with more laws to cover our asses from the loop holes of the last ones, "ignorance of the law" really is an excuse!
  
  @Clownzill... Not being a supporter of the Tea Party movement I can see where some folks are angered at some of their stances in politics. This isn't the forum for such topics & I won't go into any other than to say this... There are radicals on all sides, race, religion, political, sexual, psychiatric &, gender orientation. All sources that will indeed breed conflict rather healthy debate. Some use the forums & its anonymity as a means of false bravado or an attempt to be humorous & fall a bit flat.
  
  Myself, the T-party still seems be a rather small movement to have made such a large impact in a rather fragile Republican party. The T-party also seems to have ideals based in ethically improper standards that need to be reaccessed before going to their representatives. This would probably bring the heat down off their necks from all the haters.
  
  But then I'm just the old fat man in the room too...
