Microsoft video attacks Gmail

Thanks to a leaked video, we can see how Microsoft employees really feel about Gmail.

The video shows "Gmail Man," who is some kind of delivery man that scans your snail mail and then shows a related ad after finding certain keywords.

Furthermore, the video pushes Microsoft's Office 365 as an alternative.

Microsoft created the video just days after Google launched their "Email Intervention" campaign, in an effort to get Hotmail/Live and Yahoo Mail users to switch over to Gmail.

Both are decently funny.

I was amused by Google's video, but not so much by Microsoft's. Their attempts at smeering someone or even at promoting themselves tend to fall embarrasingly flat for me. And as for whom I would declare the winner, well I hate to break it to them but I don't willingly use either of them. I don't use hotmail, sure as heck don't use the woefuly out of date outlook express, and I only have a gmail account because I'm made to in order to pay for Android aps. My Comcast and yahoo mail accounts suit me just fine.

Microsoft's video probably would have been funny if not for four big issues:
1.) Most websites with input will scan what you input (or even what pages on the site you have visited) in order to place ads and "associated products" links. Go on live.com and search for something...the banner ad will be related to the search most of the time.
2.) Gmail has great spam blockers, so you don't get as many ads from email.
3.) I have adblock plus, so I have never seen an ad on Gmail. I really don't care if they are trying to sell me something because I don't see it. This, combined with adblock plus, means I almost never get any ads at all.
4.) They took a lot of harmless things and put them in unreal situations for the video...a banner ad is just a bit of graphics on the screen. It is not an annoying guy who bursts into your office and announces that you have burning butt rash in front of all your coworkers.

Because of those issues, it was just annoying and dumb. I think they will use Jim Carey for the feature film.

This would seem to claim the M$ doesn't scan your mail and I am fairly certain that is a lie. You can't send zip files zipped by proprietary app that encrypts the data in a way they can't see what you are sending. I see nothing wrong with that otherwise terrorist could just use the email to transfer stuff. gmail is up front with their reading of your email, M$ isn't.

The lying weasels! Gmail lets you send encrypted files...I send them all the time and the file size limit is several times higher than most of the inboxes that I send to. They do block certain file extensions like EXE for security reasons...but that is easily bypassed by using encrypted archives.

Hotmail lets you send encrypted files but only files encrypted with Commercial Off The Shelf software. As I remember, Hotmail will not let you send an exe file even if it is zipped up. I needed to send an exe so I tried sending the exe encrypted using my own algorithm. It wouldn't go so then I tried sending a text file zipped with my own encrypting algorithm. I was relieved to see that was rejected as well.

This has nothing to do with more and more business turning to googles apps for business platform instead of using exchange with requires a handful of bibles or/and microsoft training courses to use and administrate properly.. lol
