AT&T announces new Windows Phone 7 devices

AT&T announces their first Mango-based Windows Phone 7 devices.

Additionally, the carrier says they will be the first to update existing devices to the new software.

The three new devices are the HTC Titan, the Samsung Focus S and the Focus Flash.

HTC showed off the Titan last week with a huge 4.7 inch S-LCD, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon, 16GB storage, 512MB RAM and dual cameras.

The Focus S has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.4 GHz processor, 4G, and dual cameras.

Finally, the Focus Flash has a smaller 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen and a 1.4 GHz processor.

I'll stop the comments here before they stop. NO, these devices don't have quad-core processors running at 3.2GHz and 12GB RAM. NO, 99 percent of population doesn't care nor know the difference.

What is more suitable for a mobile? Dual-core 1Ghz or single core 1.5GHz?

Companies like Qualcomm, Nvidia, have said that their dual-core CPU's will consume less power, yet battery life on smartphones especially dual core ones, are getting worse and worse??. I think most of this has to do with the large screen size. Anything over 4" is huge, and companies like samsung are already pushing it.

A single core 1.5Ghz IS PLENTY, especially for WP7 which runs very smooth on just a 1Ghz processor. The difference you notice between Dual-core and an overclocked single core are barely a few seconds. Ask yourself, do you really need all that power? Yes you can output HD video from your phone to you TV, but when it came down to it would you want to. I'd still take a standalone blu-ray/media player any day.

The battery drain is actually caused by the 3G/4G radio.
Don't believe me? Put your phone in airplane mode (connect WIFI) and use the phone as you normally would. You will easily get much more battery life. When I turned off data on my phone to test it out I got 3-5 days. Normally I don't even get a full day.

Another test I did was to turn off 3G and only broadcast in 2G (edge). Again I got 2-3 days battery life instead of less than 1.

So all the minute power savings mean nothing until they learn to make the radio more efficient.
