R.I.P. Steve Jobs, great American innovator

R.I.P. Steve Jobs, great American innovator
There is not too much else to be said that Apple has not said in their statement.

Jobs was forced to resign in August as CEO of the company he founded as his health deteriorated. He was diagnosed in 2003 with a rare form of pancreatic cancer and took leave from work again in 2009 for a liver transplant.

We will have more in the coming week on Job's innovation and his contribution to the tech and business world as we know it.

From starting a computer company in his parent's garage in 1976 to being in charge of the most valuable public company in the world, Jobs defined an American icon in the technology business.

R.I.P.

Will leave the comments open here until someone undoubtedly ruins it.

My thoughts on the man should be abundantly clear. He was one of the best businessmen of all time and understood perfectly what the majority wanted in a device, be it smartphone, computer, etc.

R.I.P Steve.... pancreatic cancer takes yet another victim.

I remember when Randy Pausch testified to a Senate Committee about pancreatic cancer. He said he wished he had AIDS instead, as then he'd have had a chance to live for much longer than he did after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Sad day when Randy died, and a sad day again now!

I don't like Apple's ways. Still you can't deny he has a lot to do with the way the world is connected today.

You don't hear much about Steve Wozniak who co-founded Apple with Ronald Wayne and Jobs.

It wont be instant, but there is a strong chance. Even yesterday with the 4GS, there was no "magic" in Tim's presentation. When it was finished, there wasn't the usual "OMG I NEED IT" attitude that normally comes after a Steve Jobs event.

I hate Steve Jobs and how that my iPhone does not support Flash and how I still receive drop calls on my iPhone 4 and the quick fix was to hold the phone differently as he blamed us users for improperly using the phone.

I also hate every time there is a firmware update, my phone is no longer Jailbroken and it goes back to a regular locked firmware, even though it is my given right and not against the law to Jailbreak my iPhone.

With all that said and the amount of frustrating or anger I have, I still don't wish death on anyone and at a young age. God bless you and hope you are at peace now as you cross the gates... take care.

Definitely a visionary and an extraordinary businessman. Besides, love it or hate it, Apple is basically in every corner you look at: iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs...Apple Stores...And Steve was the one who had the courage and intelligence to push Apple to where it is today. People hate Apple for various reasons, but the fact remains that Steve did a great job at making his company famous and he did innovate a lot during the last few years.

While I LOATHE Apple in its entirety as well as being distinguished by the way he and the company treated their consumers, he (like so many have said) was a businessman who was there to make money and he certainly did that. Its good in the world of tech to have competition. Apple has helped push tech forward by rivaling long standing tech companies and forcing them to "stay on their toes." For this, I am greatful to him. I still detest him as a person, but I respect him as a businessman, as well feel sorry for how he had to die. I hope after this long and tough battle he has faced. He can finally now Rest In Peace.

Really, I feel the same. But he did nudge us in the right direction for mobile tech, and I thank him so much for my Pixar and these lovely Androids. I was never a fan of Apple products, but when I saw the first iPod I was hooked. It simply blew away any of the competition. As it evolved further and further and evolved into something much more than just a portable music player driving the industry as it went.

One only has to look around to see the unimaginable impact Mr. Jobs and company have had not only here, but around the world. Love him or hate him it's hard not to admire how his vision of making complex devices both simple to use and really useful made Apple a name synonymous with quality products for the non-technically oriented user.

My sincere condolances to his family. May he now rest in peace.

There are some rare individuals who discover that ideas are born, not from other individuals, not from government, not from daydreams...they come once in a while from careful thinking...they never come from others ideas that have wilted on the vine. There was a time in this country that we didnt attack people based on their success. Steve Jobs will always be one of those rare people.

He was a good salesman, nothing more. He successfully trolled people into believing he invented video chat, that incremental upgrades are worth buying, and that people have more money than sense.

He could have cared less about factory workers committing suicide over bad working conditions, treating workers at Apple like garbage, skipping transplant lists with money, and being one of the few CEOs who never donated to charity. Bill gates gave over half his wealth to charity.

People say he revolutioni而zed the computing industry, no he didn't , he managed to convince people that outdated hardware with a fancy design its worthy of the £500 price tag. The software is another thing, but I could write pages and pages on that.

No, he did not revolutionize the computing world, but to tag him as a "good salesman" only is very inappropriate.

In 2001, there were already MP3 players on the market (look at the Diamond Rio) but Jobs could see that they were hard to use and that the average consumer didn't know how to use them (nor care). In came the iPod and iTunes. Industry, revolutionized.

In 2008, there were smartphones on the market (of course). Hell, Palm had been out for at least half a decade. Jobs saw that the retail consumer, NOT the enterprise consumer, wanted such devices, but they wanted them to be light and stylish (like there current feature phones were). In came the iPhone. The average retail consumer now had a smartphone that was touchscreen, light, easy to use and considered "cool." iPhones are not as good as Android devices, they aren't. But look outside of AfterDawn and tell me if the average person understands them. They don't. An iPhone, they do. Another industry revolutionized.

Tablets have been around since forever, literally. No one wanted them until the iPad. That includes businessmen and retail consumers alike. Another industry revolutionized.

Macs are a waste, but get by on their design. Meh.

I don't like Apple products, never have, never will. They are too locked down for me and I hate having to have Quicktime and iTunes installed, ever. They are "dumbed" down devices to me.

I run a Win 7 desktop, a ChromeOS book and a Sensation 4G. I am not the average consumer. Neither are most of the everyday posters here. If I was to tell the average consumer that my phone has a dual core processor, 1GB RAM and a 8sghh82 GPU, they would nod their head without understanding. Now tell that same person that the new iPhone has a personal assistant and 500,000 apps and they will get a smile on their face cause they understand.

A "good salesman" can sell you a car that's slightly above your price range. Steve Jobs understood the needs of a quarter billion regular people and got them hooked on the brand for life. It's one thing to not appreciate Apple, quite another to call Mr. Jobs a good salesman.

    <end rant>

MP3's were not hard to use they were VERY easy even the Rio. When the Archos came out, I still have the 20GB Jukebox, it was easy to use but big and for some loading music on it might have been a bit confusing but part of that was because it truly was a new device and people were still using and use to Sony WalkMan's and cassette tapes. By the time Rio's came out I had had a MP3 player for close to a decade the Rio was nice as the newer Archos's as they got much smaller. The only thing Jobs did was put a pretty piano black finish on it and make a larger display which was nice but come on the iPods broke way too easy. I still have my original Archos and it works great mean while iPod friends were going on there 3rd iPod because they don't hold up. The sheep follow Apple because they have them in schools and that is what there use to, plus someone has brainwashed them into believing they are the best, they are not. In fact Scans came out with one that looked just like the iPod but it was horrible, sound quality bad and controls not the best, but it sure looked pretty.

And actually I had the Rio first so I got that backwards as I didn't have the 20GB Archos until 2000 which was huge in size even compared to iPod classic in 2001 that was 5-10GB and the Archos would work with Windows. It was at that time I bought a Scansdisk which was just like the iPod but was horrible too.

About the only things that Steve brought to the product line were the deathgrip antenna that all his engineers were against and the prohibitions against allowing other companies to provide features to the devices for FREE. Oh, and he also had a hand in that great idea about putting an unshielded speaker directly below the hard disk on one of the older MAC models, causing it to reboot every time the startup sound was played.

He was a salesman...a marketing mastermind. This is a huge thing...honestly, do you think that you could get people to buy an iPhone4 when there are android devices with more features, larger screens, more than double the performance, no deathgrip antenna, and costing far less? Isn't this enough for you people? Why must you say that he did a bunch of things he didn't do while completely ignoring the one thing he was a master of?

Also, calling him anything other than a salesman is an insult to the countless innovators who died without such praise in spite of the fact that they actually innovated.

Calling him a good man is an insult to every good man who ever died without the world praising their name.

Steve Jobs knew what people wanted. Half the population doesn't know what dual core, RAM, processor speed and all mean. They want a phone that's simple, straight forward and easy to use. That's what Apple created. With MacBooks, they created a simple operating system that does what people need without the extra bells and whistles of Windows. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who think that Windows sucks, I use Windows and I also have a Mac. I love Windows on my desktop where I can install as many programs as I need, hack devices, Jtag, etc. I use my Mac for school. I want simplicity in school and that's what Mac gives me. I don't have an iPhone and I probably will never get one but my Dad is always confused with his Android. He's 75, he doesn't have time to learn how to use a phone. I guarantee you he'll love the iPhone. Icons on a screen, it can't get much simpler than that.

Apple's strong point was Marketing old products with new software. The iPhone 4S is a generation behind. Watch it sell like crazy.

Nope, iPods were no better than many others that had been on the market for a decade prior including Archos the actual first on the market.

I wouldn't consider iPod's better than any other device. There were many other devices with more features such as the Zune (30GB iPod Video vs 30GB Zune; Zune had more features). What made the iPods and every other Apple product a winner was the simplicity of use.

I don't care what anyone says, the MP3 players I remember using at the time had three times as many buttons that were always placed differently and therefore had a learning curve. And they were all just so clunky; I realize the first-gen iPods weren't too much better, but they still were.

DVDBack, thank you, I wanted to say something similar but didn't have time to research a timeline and I wasn't in to the market when I was young like I am now.

Mr-Movies, this is just personal opinion of course and so a bit irrelevant, but I have not touched a single Archos product that I've enjoyed at any time of my life. MP3/MP4 players and tablets alike. That's not to say they don't hold up better and don't work well (and I haven't played with much Android on one) but the UI's (especially on older products I tried) always felt buggy and had weird menu placements. Again, just opinion, and I haven't played with many since the Android craze has started.

And KillerBug, no he's not an engineer or creator. But he is still responsible for one of the most recognizable brand names in existence and I'm still of the strong belief that had he not crashed so strongly into the market with the iPhone, we would not have so many devices that are price-conscientious with better tech and more features. He set a standard for others to beat; without that standard these things would have gone a different direction altogether. Do you remember old HTC devices? Absolutely awful devices compared to the Palms and BlackBerries of the time, yellowish and unresponsive screens, buggy performance. Now look at them, arguably some of the best phones in the market.

I'll take a slower drag and drop generic MP3 player over a Itunes infested device any day of the week!

Speaking of which is there any app that will turn an jail broken Ipod touch into one?(IE shows the folders and such so I don't have to use Itunes just put the files directly on the device.)

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy!

I don't know. I used to try drag'n'dropping on un-jailbroken devices like an idiot lol the music would go but not get picked up because of the naming scheme. I think there might could be something, but that naming scheme would require some conversion process. You know, you can use foobar to manage your iPods and all right? I'd recommend that program to anyone due to its openness and huge add-on base; but I don't know of a way to add files manually.

Well DiskAid/fileapp is a loss for music management but not for documents(tho have to make them on the PC and put them on the Ipod via DiskAid/fileapp). I still can't save notes to the PC I have quick office which lets me copy stuff from a web browser.

Would love to use the podcast selection for talk radio MP3s I record but I can not use that feature it seems locked to the Itunes store, I can make a play list to play only the radio stuff but its hard to do it as so the radio stuff dose not get caught in playing music ><

One thing about the apple Iphone, besides all the apps and gadgets is that the PHONE part is not a very good phone. My wife's 3GS dropped 2 calls to my daughter's 3G coming home from work today. My daughter has already ordered the Iphone 4. My creative Jukebox mp3 was really a clunker from 2003. Loaded now, with no way to change anything, because the software won't install on my win7pc. But it always worked. And I could change the battery.

He managed to make the Ipod synonymous with MP3 player. Other than that nothing much.

    Stupid much?

Round corners and sales mad skills are NOT innovation; they're just that: round corners and sales mad skills.

What are market innovations called then? Tho an inventor he is not. The most I can stomach him being called is a great businessman and a innovator in business/products which is different and very separate from creating a product IMO.
