200,000 iPhone 4S sold in first 12 hours
AT&T has revealed that 200,000 Apple iPhone 4S were sold in the first 12 hours of availability.

The carrier is seeing "extraordinary demand" for the smartphone, which was revealed the day before the passing of Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs.

Verizon and Sprint did not reveal pre-order figures but demand is expected to be strong for both carriers, as well. Sprint is a first-time entry into the iPhone market.

The iPhone set the record last June, with 1.7 million devices being sold in the first 72 hours. This was when AT&T was the exclusive carrier.

Apple is expected to sell 27 million iPhones this quarter.

My mother just asked me about the iPad randomly after seeing his death the other day. Obviously I said at least get the Eee Transformer for a tablet, maybe the Galaxy for a little more, and say no to socialism :)

They didn't even start pre-selling them until the day after, so no, it wouldn't have been possible to sell ANY before. I don't know if the "extraordinary demand" quote was just talking about customer interest or what. However, sales are along the same lines of previous new iPhone sales.

They did not start pre-order until Friday the 7th, so how can AT&T sell them before that? Unless it is a typo and meant the pre-order.

These are also figures for ONLY at&t, in the US. att's numbers alone are pretty outstanding for this being the phone no one was interested in.

Goes to show you that the average consumer doesn't care about specs. Only us who frequent tech sites and such actually care about them. Which is in the minority when it comes to who does most of the purchasing.

Selling even one of them would have been, "extraordinary demand" given the specs, limitations, and price, combined with the fact that it isn't even out yet.
