OMG! I couldn't stop myself from LOL'ing. Yeah, if Apple were to sell their stuff for what they're actually worth (in usability cost, not production cost) I think a Macbook Pro should be about $499. iPhone would be about $70 and I'm being generous there. iPad would be sold at Bed Bath and Beyond as serving trays for about $35 each (thank you Pee-Wee Herman for the serving tray idea! Ha Ha!)
And remember, kids: you can install Windows, Linux, or even FreeBSD on a Mac but in the end it's still a piece of crap! ;)

These prices are insane...every time I see Apple price drops/sales I am shocked at how much they charge for these things. If a macbook with the same specs as a $300 Toshiba was selling for $400 I would think that was a bad price and people were just buying a namebrand...but the macbook costs more than twice that much!

In the end, if Apple dropped their prices by say $500, then I think they'd see some FAST sales.
Wonder how much it costs Apple to make a MBP. I mean, the boards smaller than a DVD case with all the parts soldered to it, wouldn't that cut significant costs?

We all have our different perceptions of different products. I see macs as very good performing computers.I bought myself a macbook pro 13" last year in the summer and I could not be any happier with it. It makes absolutely no noise and the battery lasts me a whole work day. My dad's toshiba barely lasts 4 hours and it cost him just as much as my mac did. Not to mention I have windows 7 dual booting on it and it handles it just as good as my quad-core pc does. If I need to use a windows program such as visio, autocad, or fl studio I just fire up VmWare and off I go. I'll have osx running on the laptop's screen, windows 7 on another screen, and like 10 different programs open at the same time (I multitask a lot) and my MBP doesn't even get slow. On my old pc I could never do that, unless I had a very high end pc. They are very productive machines, if I had another laptop I wouldn't be getting as much done. Thats the brand image Apple is trying to paint with their products, and its starting to work.
As for the price, yes agree they are a bit overpriced. If they sold the base MBP for $1000 they would sell soooo many more, and trust me they will do this in the future. They make nice gross margins off their macs (and everything else), and people still buy them, so they know they can keep doing it. Its just business.

Buying a macbook at $1200 then installing win7, when you can have a much better spec'd windows7 laptop for half that price is retarded. End of story. I'm sorry I don't doubt the mac book is a nice unit, but there is nothing inside of it worth 3 times more than a similar laptop.

Saying the most comfortable keyboard isn't a valid argument, so many other laptops have the same keyboard as the MBP. Gestures are cool, but not worth $600 extra. I agree, it is fast but if you know how to use a Win7 machine, it'll easily be faster. I can tell you off the bat my i5 Windows 7 machine kills my MBP in speed.
Anyways, the touchpad sucks in Windows 7 via Bootcamp. The old A1181s were so much better in that aspect.
On top of everything, find a copy of hackintosh. Even for an average user, it's not too hard to install.
Yes, they're worth it, but maybe $50-100 more than a Windows machine.
