Foxconn has resolved its dispute with factory workers

Foxconn has resolved its dispute with factory workers
Yesterday we reported that 300 disgruntled workers at Foxconn's Technology Park in Wuhan, China allegedly threatened to commit suicide following a pay dispute with their boss.

The company, which has 1.1 million workers and is a major supplier for Apple, Microsoft and other electronics behemoths, says it has resolved the issues, and most of the workers are back to work. 45 of those involved had resigned, however.

One of the workers who returned to the company says that following negotiations with the company and government officials, they will be given the additional compensation they had been promised. Foxconn employees 32,000 workers for that plant, alone, so the incident appears to have been blown a bit out of proportion.

Foxconn is notorious for poor working conditions and was a daily headline in the last few years as workers committed suicide to have their families collect death compensation that was worth over 10 years of standard work pay. The company was even forced to install nets around their campuses to catch would-be jumpers. Psychiatrists have been installed in the factories, as well.

The company's headlines have also been somewhat of a PR fiasco for their American partners, who are forced to have their name included in reports, whether or not the factory bosses followed their mandated working condition guidelines.

Foxconn is also looking to move their operations into western China, where there are more workers, and the costs are even less than they are now. Many of the current workforce travel from western China already. Foxconn plans to replace workers with robots and has already begun to do so.

"Give us what we want or we'll kill ourselves!"
Go for it! Jump! Perhaps if Foxconn stopped paying out for suicides, nobody would want to jump! What weird employees they must have. Get a new boss if you don't like Foxconn, FFS!
I hope the new robots won't get militant too!

Apple: Very few my mirror? Do tell me who!
Mirror: As evil as you are you rotten fruit Foxconn is a far bigger douche than you.

You guys are out of your minds! I mean, yeah it's a great news story, this shite should be on the world news to show how desperate the rest of the globe is making China become due to our gluttony!

For F**ing shame! The greed machine has gotten so bad that even China has started to move their own production INTO CHINA!!! Now how the hell did that work out? It's even cheaper? I didn't even think that was possible!

Now those people will become unemployed. Hey folks... They don't have unemployment insurance over there! If those folks over there start getting pissed off, what do you think is going to start happening? It's called 'revolution' & their families will stick together tighter than the military will. Don't think for an instant they won't start branching out into Europe & the rest of Asia to make up the difference either.

Pompous & military wannabe as Tom Clancy was he had the right idea. Keep an eye open on this kind of behavior too, because I can almost guarantee this isn't an isolated incident.

That is just plain wrong... How can you blame on the workers? Remember, there are no medical or unemployment protections like we have here, hence cheaper labor. To tell another human being to jump off the building is just plain sick.

The people in China who DON'T work at Foxconn are not jumping from buildings. Why do these particular people at Foxconn make you want to call me sick? Do you have a beef with this company?

Foxconn doesn't work with Apple direct, it is more so Intel boards they make for MAC's, Intel should be listed before Apple but that doesn't get people worked up as bad as Apple will here, funny....

10 years of pay at $2/hr. shouldn't hurt the company too bad so why the nets? Shame on me... I'd like to say these third world countries are horrible with their labor but even here in the US we are heading done this same road. CEO's are raping companies, paying employee's less and less with working conditions deterioration as well. We don't get the same benefits and we pay more for less. It's not just China and 3rd world countries that have bad working conditions even if we have a ways to go to be as bad.

Exactly folks... Right to work states are causing the unions to become eunuchs, when the unions aren't plying into the corporations hands. This in turn causes the corporations to overwork their employees on an hourly basis, day by day & only pay them over time AFTER they have accrued their 40 hours; while intimidating them to work after clocking out or lose what little employment they have.

This is what free enterprise has given us people. And just like the wanton little children that they are, they want to play the games of "you didn't tell us we couldn't" when people are getting hurt & sick. Or they start to blame the victims. The shit has got to stop people!

What makes you think they don't do the same in other countries where they REALLY don't have any rules?

I'm certainly not going to argue with you about anything. I don't care about Foxconn or its workers. Why should I? 40 years ago, cheap textile imports from India, Pakistan and China decimated our part of England. (Lancashire was the main producer of textiles in Britain) Tens of thousands were thrown out of work because of it, me amongst them. Now they are getting some of what they gave to us. What, do you want me to feel sorry for them now the same is happening to them? Afraid not.

Ok Blaster4... So you're basically mad at China then :P "cheap textile imports" that's the problem right there (happening in the US right now). It drives job away domestically, why buy expensive stuff made locally when you can import them for a fraction of the cost?

As for "they are getting some of what they gave to us" comment, I'm not seeing it. Foxconn and its worker issue is not some "cheap import" problem, China is not importing cheap chips, am I missing something here?

    Peace!

Last word from me, Kevin. China (and other countries) stuck it to us, left us unemployed or working for peanuts. Nobody in the world cared about us. Now that employees of Foxconn are having problems like we had (work for peanuts or be jobless) how do you expect me to react? Feel sorry for them? I don't remember words of sorrow from you or anybody else. I don't remember words of sorrow coming from Chinese workers or their bosses when they were making us jobless. But we didn't decide to threaten suicide if we didn't get things our way. I'm guessing that you are of Chinese origin, thus your tenacity on this subject. I'm sorry, I just can't give a sh!t about Foxconn or any labour problems in China when they are busy trying to put the rest of the world out of business.

Okay okay, clam down, I'm not asking you to show compassion to Foxconn nor the people killing themselves for being screwed by Foxconn managements. I feel for you okay? I mean, I have friends getting layoff and stuff, so as a human being, I do feel the mental stresses and heartaches for being squeezed out. I really do... But then again, this is the real world, who's really responsible for the cheap labors huh? While everyone enjoys inexpensive products, nobody questions what happens if you relies too much on imports and not buying locally? I find that hard to believe, the word is hypocrite :P

I'm from NYC and we (Americans) are feeling the squeeze too. But again, we are to blame, we're enjoying materialism base on other people's blood and sweat.

Look, life is never fair, you can hold the grudge all you want, but it's all history... Don't you get me started on the Opium War :-) I'm not proud of what the Chinese do for a living, but I can't deny that they work hard. Remember, at one point China was carved up by the superpowers, they were powerless...

Take into consideration, who wit was that sent your job to the Foxconn (or wherever)? Be bitter, but don't hate the guy doing your job over there because he doesn't know you personally.

Your company strangled you out of your job & your livelihood. They are the ones that robbed you & put it in a foreign market. That guy just lined up with a bunch of other starving people & took his shot just like everybody else.

Now that very same company is doing the very same damned thing to that guy that they did to you, all those years ago.

Keep your humanity for shits sake man... Despite what the idiotic US government says about corporations being 'people'; they aren't! Don't become the same cold, lifeless, dead, machine. Look at the people, not the damned company. Screw the company!

The one thing that's wrong with what you say is that the bosses, the mill owners went down the tubes too, along with the workers. They couldn't sell their businesses because nobody would buy a company that was defunct and in many cases they lost everything too. The retail market was flooded with cheap imported cotton goods and nobody wanted our quality textiles any more. I understand your "Up with the workers, down with the bosses" stance and when I was younger I would have agreed with you. However I'm much older now and see things from a more realistic perspective. The fact that it is China is really immaterial. If the company was in the UK, I'd still feel the same. Bottom line: If you put me out of a job, don't expect me to start crying when it all blows up in your face later!

No offense, but who's fault is that? If the import is cheap, i.e. not quality stuff, do you honestly think people are that gullible? No! You can't expect people buy quality fountain pens if cheap ballpoint pens are adequate. Cheap stuff breaks, everyone knows that! If people were fooled to buy the cheap stuff, they'll know sooner of later, which means the makers of the real stuff have nothing to be afraid of. Sometimes, it's not about cheap stuff, it's about "return on investment." If I can use it for few years, why pay a premium for life time?

Then all I can say is that I'm not looking to be "right" at all. I'm older (not as old) & victimized by 'the system' as well. I can't speak for you culturally, because I live in the US, so that alone speaks for itself.

Neither of us have walked in the other's shoes, so to say either has had it rougher is an unfair assessment, just as it is unfair to tell our kids that they have it easy these days.

Let's just say you're a better man from coming out the other side to tell your story and like me (yes, like me) you have the balls to at least speak your mind despite the outcry. Just don't let the contradiction of your distaste for capitalism be misplaced or be misconstrued as as dispassion for the human condition. I think that's what folks in here are worried about.

Not that I would be so conceited as to be thinking for everyone in here in the forum or for you sir.

Why is that everyone love to talk the talk? Honestly, I prefer people buy locally and depend less on Chinese imports, BUT no! Everybody is enjoying cheap prices from Wal-marts and such. So, don't tell me who is enemy is when you're sleeping with one for such long time. I have problems with hypocrites, just look at the shear amount of Apple products people consumed over the years. How the hell is that people admiring the "affordable" luxury goods while hating the cheap labors that made them?

There's no such thing as friends with benefits, it's all about everybody is screwing around and ultimately paying the price for it. People never complain about the good times when they were being blown by some poorer souls less fortunate than them, but they cry fouls when it's their time to get ass raped.

I'm not starting a fight here, so don't take the tenor of this comment as such, but your comment smacks of the similar games you speak of as well. Do you not write from a similarly produced technology? I mean your phone or computer didn't grow from a tech-bush just outside your front door, so the 'system' is what "I" primarily hold responsible for having gotten us into the situation that we are in.

Back when I could buy products produced from a respective country, I could boycott whatever atrocity they were doing that pissed me off. Now that everything is overseas, that can't happen. Case in point; now that my nuts get caught in the zipper more often than they used to & I where underwear more often, so I buy my drawers from a local retailer. It just so happens that the only retailer that sells underwear cheap enough because I'm on a fixed income is also raping overseas countries.

I hate the "system", I hate what's its done to my country/social attitude & I didn't spend 6 years of my life to ruin my health defending Americans to become assholes & ship their jobs off to foreign lands. I'll bet other folks feel the same about their respective countries as well, yet here we all sit.

You can complain of the situation & glad handle people about the "talk", but like I've told my soldiers in the past, "What's your solution!?!" Nobody of any account likes the ones I have.

Although there may have been a good relationship, Commonwealth, with the Philippines’ it is long gone now. The writing was on the wall in the early 90's when we pulled our military out of Subic Bay / Angeles City area per their request, we were told to leave actually. The older folks there who fought with our military against the Japanese loved us but the young people of today side on the other side of that relationship. I lived over there for several years throughout Luzon, mostly Makati, Manila so I have a pretty good appreciation for that situation. Russ may have been in the Philippines’ as well when he was in the military.

At any rate I really don't know why we would even argue commonwealth in this thread.

LOL ... Just explaining to LordRuss what commonwealth is and Im just saying Philippines is still an asset for cheap labor instead of the chinese. Do you know Spratly Islands conflict is still brewing out there? chinese is flexing their muscles in the china sea and we should too. As I said before china is the TRUE enemy and we here in the US is supporting their military by buying chinese goods.

Actually that all started when we helped Mao Tse-Tung and started to push China into the industrial age. Also Clinton helped the military directly for campaign funding purposes with missile and satellite technology and provided many super computers for their programs. China is smart because they are now following our old model and we are dumb because now we are changing to be more like the EU, exactly what we fled from so many years ago, people don't learn their lessons as a rule and repeat their mistakes, history dictates that.

I think we are our biggest enemy China is just one of many benefactors from that. That would be my very brief outlook of our situation which is way more complicated than stated.

Generally I think this is the basic sediment of a few here with my own slant on it.

Listen to yourself, what the hell is commonwealth? Is there such thing as common wealth?

On the contrary, I think we're on the same page... I just didn't think the "system" is at fault because I still think there's something good in it, but you're right, it's the "system" corrupts the people's values.

On the angle of boycotting, you're also right, it's nearly impossible to make a statement "buy US made" now a day :-( The US government penalizes me for saving money, the interest from my saving account is being heavily taxed, I don't get that! I don't want to spend all of my money, I don't want to live on credits! The US economy feeds on consumer spending, sigh...

I chuckled at your bold comment, it's the sad truth (lol at the balls and zipper).

    Peace!

I think we are our biggest enemy China is just one of many benefactors from that. That would be my very brief outlook of our situation which is way more complicated than stated.

Not offense to the EU countries, but I totally agree with Mr Movies on the bold part. There are many enemies, the bottom line is, you can't just ignore the benefits from sleeping with them and crying foul when it's your turn to get screwed. It's part of the package you signed up for. If you don't want to worry about diseases or morning pills, pull out immediately :D I just don't understand why bother complaining when the seeds were planted. Just man up and solve the problems rather than crying like little girls. If the seeds were planted, eradicate the abominations, it's never too late. Weeds can get you high, but they cloud your judgements.

Unfortunately I have a long way to go before my retirement, so I'm going to get a lot more screwing from all fronts (Chinese, Mexicans, Uncle Sam...). As to "commonwealth," I never like that term, it's pretty much something the rich folks came up with so that they can take stuff from the poor folks "lawfully."

    Peace!
