DOJ brings the hammer down on Megaupload

DOJ brings the hammer down on Megaupload
Earlier today, the U.S. government shut down Megaupload.com, one of the largest and longest running cyberlockers in the business.

Its founders and a handful of employees have been arrested, as well, and charged with copyright infringement.

The indictment and arrests come just one day after major websites including Wikipedia and Google staged anti-SOPA "blackouts." SOPA was created to fight piracy, but has seen massive criticism due to its ability to shut down sites with very little appeal time, at the behest of media companies or other content owners.

Megaupload and its owners are accused of taking over $500 million from copyright holders due to piracy, and cashing in on $175 million in profits from ads and premium subscriptions.

Calling the group "Mega Conspiracy," the indictment reads: "In exchange for payment, the Mega Conspiracy provides fast reproduction and distribution of infringing copies of copyrighted works from its servers located around the world."

On top of the arrests, 18 domain names were seized, $50 million in assets were seized, and 20 search warrants were executed around the world.

Those arrested were high level execs, including founders Kim Dotcom and Mathias Ortmann, company chief marketing and sales officer, Finn Batato and head of development Sven Echternach. Most were arrested in New Zealand.

Megaupload has 150 million registered users and 50 million daily uniques, placing it in the top 25 most trafficked websites on the entire planet.

People are entirely too content for that sort of thing. Now if there were a nationwide blackout for a few days and they couldn't watch reality television or post on facebook... that would be another story entirely. :p

the issue with the groups like ICE and RIAA is that they are paid to do this and the more they shut down more go up and they stay in the hire for payment biz. but if they weren't needed like if all shares stopped for say one month then they would be out of Biz. and then everything could go back as normal for all they would have to find new companies to take money from... that said a tit for tat game even 10 to 1 attacks will leave them in power to say they are needed ... issues with the web will empower them to start more legislation on a global level and those that join in with them will become more likely targets for those that appose them .. this will lead to a disruption of the web as we know it ... this is the start of "W4"the new "World Wide Web War" may the gods of the internet forgive us all for it will never be the same ...

while I'm up on my soapbox and sorry to all :
when a government takes the view of a biz over the people they represent they its called a dictatorship the more money Hollywood pumps into Washington the more they show that they will protect any special interest groups over its people for a price... and we elected these bozo's, and they are speaking for us all to the world... maybe they are right we can't make good decisions for our selves ... after all we voted for them or maybe we didn't and were just to busy to care... sorry to the world maybe we wont make that choice next time...

If they were knowingly allowing copyrighted materials to be shared on the site, they broke the law. Simple as that!

If they truly were unaware of what was being shared on the site, they should be exonerated and should have only been given warnings about specific materials, but unfortunately the story is very vague.

Of course, this also means the DoJ will have records of all uploaders (and possibly downloaders), so users of the site may also risk legal action in the future.

US DoJ wanted to wait until SOPA passed to take down Megaupload. Once they realized it wouldn't pass, they decided to take it down anyway.

I actually wonder if they really took it down for piracy?

Seeing as Anonymous always use megashare for all their email dumps etc that closing the door on megashare would shut the door on anonymous for dumping the stuff they have stolen from companies.

ICE can shut down any site it wants shut down they have shut down child porn sites as well.

This really is an outrage. What is to happen with all the legitimate accounts that are on the servers?

Under what truthful authority can they possibly arrest these people? It would be like arresting an apartment owner for one of his tenants being a drug dealer. Maybe he/she knew about the drug dealer & for one reason or another could/couldn't do anything about it, but the guy was still living there.

Everyone else that lived in the complex was fine, it's just this guy. Police come & arrest him, but no, they have to arrest the "Owner" (the landlord/manager) too, because he's just as guilty. And then go the extra mile to round up all the people that came & went out of the complex & you might as well arrest all the folks living there as well cause their guilty of it too.

I'm hoping this fish is so big that it breaks the hook, turns around & swallows them all whole. I hope they can all get lawyers so fat, sweaty & all their middle names are legally "something that sounds like a dick" and they sue all involved back well before the Big Bang.

It's a different form of greed folks. It's a pompousness given the position of power and it is driven by the wheels of those with a LOT of money.

I don't agree with the U.S. extending its legal arm as far as it is. I also don't agree with MU being shutdown for "hosting". It's ridiculous that owners be held accountable for what others are putting on their servers.

But.........in all sincerity, this is control at the chokepoint so it's KIND OF understandable.

Too bad it wont happen because people are too lazy to learn about history and the principles our country was founded on. Any upheaval wont happen until we are pushed to the breaking point and all that will start is a civil war between the citizens and the government.

    Dear Ronald,

Thank you for contacting me to share your views on H.R. 3261, the "Stop Online Piracy Act," also known as SOPA. It is good to hear from you, and I would appreciate your continued input on important issues facing our nation.

H.R. 3261, and its Senate counterpart, S. 968, the "Protect IP Act," would authorize both the Attorney General and license and patent holders, to bring actions against online infringers operating an internet site or domain where the site is "dedicated to infringing activities." While I believe that copyright infringement and other illegal activity on the internet needs to be combated, H.R. 3261 goes too far and has far too many unintended consequences. If this legislation were to come to the floor in its current form, I would cast a No vote.

H.R. 3261 is currently under consideration by the House Judiciary Committee, whose Chairman announced that they would not move this legislation along further. In addition, Senate leaders have cancelled their planned vote on S. 968. At this time there are no plans for H.R. 3261 and S. 968 to move through the legislative process. Rest assured that I will closely monitor these bills during the 112th Congress, and I will continue to keep your views in mind.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact me. If you would like to learn more about my positions on the issues or stay updated on important developments in Congress, please visit www.kissell.house.gov and sign up for our E-Newsletter to keep you more informed of my work in Congress. Please check my website for more information. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

    Sincerely,

    Larry Kissell
    Member of Congress

if megaupload comes down, then every site out there could be tagged as copyright infringing. if you have a blog, if a commenter copies some text from some authority site and pastes the text as comment in your blog, that can be interpreted by sopa as piracy.

if you have a forum, and i create a thread that i copied from some materials on the net, that too could be a copyright infringement.

so facebook is on its way out. google too for maintaining an index of sites and copying there meta headers into their index.

wordpress, blogger, youtube, most of the major sites can fall under this definition.

    what's left now to do.

That's just it, folks -- all the other filesharing sites are still up. You may be thinking, "Yes, but for how long?" Well, if the DOJ could so thoroughly and completely annihilate MegaUpload out of existence, don't you think they could just as easily do that to all other filesharing websites? Or...is there something more obvious and flagrant about MegaUpload that made it (clearly) easy for the DOJ to obliterate it right off the internet?

The fact is that this isn't Nazi Germany or Communist China. This is America and rules have to be followed for indictments to stick like this one apparently seems to be.

I mean, c'mon people -- there are still blatant pirate torrent sites still up and operating that the DOJ can't seem to take down, but they can take down an "innocent" filesharing site? MegaUpload clearly did something stupid, got caught, and are now gone.

There's an old saying in law enforcement: "Only the stupid criminals get caught."

Yes, because they're cleaning house so they can stay up.

It's like a street full of restaurants where one is shut down after a health department inspection -- all the other restaurants then scurry around to make sure everything is perfect, but they only do so after one of them is shut down.

Which is just like you're back tracking to clarify your original statement. An assurance that someone doesn't come along to claim 'right' king of pissant mountain.

All individuals who are involved in criminal activities that become acutely aware of ANY judicial actions coming down the pipeline will undoubtedly start to 'cover their ass'. It is usually the ones best financed & grossly educated that get the more advanced notice.

Then there are the pawns of the game. Even the file lockers that you have proposed as having not been shut down yet, WERE in fact shut down at one time for the very same reasons. They went lax & upon probably hearing about this blitzkrieg of judicial action coming, stepped up their policing a few months ago.

So, no, innocence is fickle in the eyes of US law & can most certainly be bought.

You obviously have no idea about how the USA ran before the current economic policies started to take hold about a hundred years ago. You spout verbiage from a liberal arts college or the like with no regard for any other line of thought or actual facts. Your statement that you dont have to read his own words shows that you are incapable of learning anything that actually challenges your ideas or views. Become a student of history. Maybe then you will begin to gain some wisdom.

Your statement that you dont have to read his own words shows that you are incapable of learning anything that actually challenges your ideas or views. Become a student of history. Maybe then you will begin to gain some wisdom.
This is all irrelevant - The USA is finished and is in self destruct mode. The country is run by liars, thieves and criminals. It was the USA that caused the global financial crash of today by selling off packaged fraudulent loans to Banks world wide, especially to Europe. They did this to slow down China's dominant trade economy giving them time to set up camp in Africa (Africom). The thing we should bare in mind now is this, when will the USA trigger off WW3?

I was with you up until the WW3 thing... Well, Africa might be a little bit of a stretch too, but I'm not going to argue quite yet.

Honestly, my biggest fear is when Germany & Sweden get their nuts up & make their margin call on the US again. Anyone with half a brain in the stock market (& I don't, it's not my education) knows we are illegally, continually & once again (like we 'ever' stopped) trading in the world markets, grossly 'in the margin'.

It caused the Great Depression of the 30s & to call our current situation anything less is a misnomer. It's rumored that it was Hitler's influence on the markets to make the margin calls across the board that helped bring Germany's economy back (in part, not as a whole). Obviously, that chaos worked to his advantage, despite the rumor.

Companies literally have global domination & with little exception there is little the government can do to curb the control of power.

Scary how greed & the pursuit of wealth can do that.

Interesting you mentioned Germany because they are looking to buy out the NYSE this year. Check out news on Chinese presence in Africa and over 100 Billion investment being pumped into the region this year, very interesting stuff occurring.

Yeah you are kind of right about that. I expect civil war here instead. But that will probably happen right before we instigate another world war. I blame it on our Education policies in america. We bring the smart down and discourage independent thinking. Hell our understanding of the sciences is abysmal. Dont even get me started on history. I half blame Mtv for this lazy outlook we have on life where singers are glamorized to the point that people think its more important to have rims on their car and a "bumpin' system" than to know how to spell. I take my extra money and buy practical things that make life more secure for me and mine. Phuq Looking cool. Looking cool will look real stupid when shit hits the fan and they've got nothing to subsist on. I still cant believe that the human race is so susceptible to propaganda. We generally believe anything on the news or that our government says. Its ridiculous how retarded we can be.

Wish I had seen this earlier. Love when "enlightened geniuses" like yourself insult others without posting even an ounce of fact in your own post. Surely your first hand experience of how the U.S. was run in the 1800s will shed some light on my ignorance. Also, anything that happened back then means NOTHING now and is completely irrelevant to any conversation. This is a conversation about CURRENT economic policy and Ron Paul's policies would destroy the U.S., there is no way around that. There is NO World War 3 upcoming and there is NO deflation (although I'm sure you believe there is) in the U.S. You seem like someone who has invested in guns and canned food for the upcoming civil war and martial law that is not coming.

But please continue on, I'm sure your dual economics and history degrees from Princeton will put me in my place.

LOL... Are you serious? you think no WW3 coming? 10th September 2001 Rumsfeld announces 2.3 trillion missing thanks to the Pentagon defense spending and the US was in recession at the time. The next day when the stock market was sure to plummet and crash with this announcement? 9/11 just so happened and the entire Air force was half asleep "training". - This gave the powers that be enough time to close the market for a few days! Central banks pumped in billions to limit the damage.

Since then the Pentagon has destroyed the USA and continues to do so by spending TRILLIONS on???? Well it's "unaccounted" for! Watch news clips on Youtube. To compensate, the Federal reserve created the artificial housing boom to hide what was really going on. Then US banks off loaded fraudulent mortgage deals and debts in packages to banks around the world causing today's global financial crash.

The USA did this on purpose to slow down China's trade and grip on the global economy. Since then the US has gone for Iraq (oil), Afghanistan (Trillions in minerals and a deal for the Trans-Afghanistan pipeline), Libya - to stop the creation of a single African currency (Dinar) backed by Gold and oil, to stop the creation of a single united African army and to set up AFRICOM - US army bases in Africa to lock down the oil, food, water and minerals. Now they are after Iran for their oil and Syria to set up bases to hit Russia and China. World War 3 is definitely in the making and it is the USA starting it.

Please take your Alex Jones/ Prison Planet/ Info Wars jibberish elsewhere, it has no place here. Yeah yeah we know, the "9/11 inside job" was planned to kill those accountants at the Pentagon that knew where the 2.3 trillion had gone missing to, right?

The united African army and Dinar jokes are new ones I hadn't heard, but it's actually more ridiculous than the usual conspiracies, so thank you for the laugh.

It's funny because we actually have someone on the staff here that will literally embarrass any truther/alex jones fan with ACTUAL facts. I kinda wish he posting more frequently and could see this.

LOL @ Alex Jones Jibberish.... Yawn. I will now prove YOU are the nut. You are obviously too busy playing games or watching cartoons/porn? If you had even bothered to Google or watch the news clips as advised before responding in a non factual ignorant fashion you would have just saved making yourself look a twit. The information provided came from Haliburton (Trans-Afghan oil pipeline) Africom (Us Military) 2.3 Trillion missing(Press release from Donald Rumsfeld), African single currency and gold dinar (announced by leaders of African countries , news and various banks) Bank and mortgage fraud packaged and sold on (announced by US government, US treasury, Banks around the world and the news). As for the Iranian oil (google Iran/Pakistan oil pipeline to Rival US Trans-Afghan Pipeline causing US concerns). As just proven - NONE of the information came from Alex Jones in any shape or form. Close the door behind you. :) Uhm... Not that I wanted to jump into any of this at all, but I'm up to date on all my cartoons & porn & your statements are a bit misguided at best. It's kind of like saying Atheism is a religion or masturbation is a sexual position.

While your statements have a 'slant' of truth to them, the perpetrators aren't/weren't the one's admitting to their own crimes. At least that's the way you're writing your rebuttal.

I've seen the Jesse Ventura shows too & he make s good argument, but that's still TV & you have to look at old adage, "don't believe everything you read". Breath a little, calm down & actually reflect. Misdirection, out of context, half truths & something as simple as throwing a beat up & singed rag doll into a building turned to rumble is a means of editing media to sway popular decision. It should also be an executable offense for misguiding people from the truth (through the ages as it has).

Now does what the bulk of what you're saying REALLY fall into a 6 layer/level of scrutiny? I.e., if you put one of your theories into a flow chart, does each leg of it's y/n come to a solution by the 5th level or not? If not then it's purely conspiracy & exists on the same plain as unicorn & jack-a-lopes.

I'm saying trusting 'just' a Google search isn't going to do it & I'm certainly not going to put any faith into a a couple of morons armed with a computer, Premier, a VCR, a warped political agenda & no global idea what ethical impact their stupidity will have on people watching their 2 year old mentally equivalent tirade.

Use Google by all means, I would just use them to hit say Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, American/European Journal of Medicine... You know, trusted, peer reviewed stuff.

Anywho, does anyone know where I can now download the custom ROM for my phone now that this site is down? Hopefully, by still wanting to do so I'm not unknowingly starting WW3, alien invasions of our planet, crashing the stock market, or outting who killed Kennedy...

    ...sheesh...

Hi LordRuss, the comment was not aimed at you and it was not about religion, cartoons or porn but about DVDBack23 demonising people who speak of world events as nut jobs or Alex Jones lovers. It is interesting although the information derives from reputable journalists, international news, governments etc - that point is never mentioned but those who forward on this information are crack pots. In regards to "Google it" statement i totally agree with you and perhaps should expanded a little on that. What I meant was by "Googling it" provides connections to an abundance of reputable sources listing details on the subjects mentioned.
